An easy way is to get your rocker 'on the rock', spin the pushrod with your fingers while tightening the posi-lock. As soon as it becomes hard to spin THEN give them 1/2 to 3/4 turn & lock them up.
The rollers shouldn't be noisey at all with a hydraulic cam.

Can you adjust roller rockers like this too? What is the best way that people have done it? I just did mine just like Keith (Blue UC) does in his tuning video on youtube, worked front to back till they dont clack then loosen then tighten each and lock in. I think this is the best way so that you knkow you havnt adjusted it too much and holding a valve open. Yet ive got a sllight ticking sound...its not a CLACK, just a tick, kinda ticking me off (ho ho ho). I think one of them might not be 100% tight enough...i am guessing that they should be silent?

On a new motor, I adjust mine with the side covers off and I watch the plunger in lifter drop down aprox 0.020". I will get the rollers in No 6 rocking and then adjust No 1 cylinder etc. On an engine that has run before, I adjust rocker down until push rod just turns and then add an 1/8th of a turn. Not sure if this is the right meathod but it has always worked for me.

In a 6 cylinder engine you use the law of 7....rock no 6 cylinders valves adjust no 1, rock 2 adjust 5, rock 4 adjust 3, rock 1 adjust 6, rock 5 adjust 2, rock 3 adjust 4.

I do it down until it has zero clearance...I do not give it the extra 1/2 turn....as recomended in Bob Komtels column in Street Machine a few issues back.

It also depends on what lifters you run..If you use anti pump ups they want 2 thou clearance.

I don't like adjusting them when they are running..its not very precise

While it's idling, press the ball of your palm down on the pushrod end of the rockers, one by one, to isolate the offender. Give that one another 1/4 turn down and see if the noise stops.

as the exhaust valve on number 6 cylinder is closing and the inlet valve the same cylinder is opening...they rock...or overlap...when you get them to rock you can adjust the valves on number one cylinder. 6+1 =7, 5+2 ect ect

"Rocking" means the exhaust is closing as the inlet is starting to open.
Another name is "overlap" as both valves are open a bit.

When you have the valves on cyl. 1 rocking, the valves on cyl. 6 are closed and this is when you make your adjustments on cyl.6.

(Gets a bit confusing on V8's as not all manufactures number their cyls in the same order :fool: )

1 rocking, adjust 6 (1+6=7)
5 rocking, adjust 2 (5+2=7)
3 rocking, adjust 4 (3+4=7)
6 rocking, adjust 1 (1+6=7)
And so on............get it?

I'm just asking cause i will most likely have to deal with adjustable rockers in the next week.

I understand the 7 thing.

So i turn the engine around untill i see say the inlet and exhaust rockers moving on number 6 and then I wind the number 1 rockers down untill the pushrods don't spin?

thanks heaps guys. I appreciate the info.

You turn the engine around until you see say the inlet and exhaust rockers moving at the same time on number 6 and then you wind the number 1 rockers down until the pushrods just don't spin.

It's a feel thing. When you feel resistance to turning, that is tight enough. If you try hard enough you will turn them even if they are too tight.

Heehehe thats alright.....ohhh mate...had it running ok (Adjusted it while it was running)...till we see droplets of coolant at the top of rocker 1..... :gun: ....sheitty assed gasmeizer head gasket from autobarn!!!...anyway got the head offand bought a monotorque one from repco...had one before and they've been good. The sealanty bits seal on the block side...whereas the autobarn one seals on the head side...and just i general the design is compiled of crappier material. Anyone had any problems with these?

Anyway...on the head goes after lunch...and adjust the rockers again...ill be a pro in no time lmao

Tried the 'law of 7' way of tuning roller rockers....wow...worked great!! :D quiet as...however after a while one is making a ticking sound so i think i didnt lock one in tight enough, will adjust it in the coming days, however that is a much cleaner and better way of tuning them....easy to follow too, thanks guys

can you set rockers running with a solid cam? I did mine with feeler guages cold and it seemed fine but was told to set it again hot, by time i removed the radiator out to get access to the front crank bolt to turn the motor the motor was half cooled, by time i did the last rocker it was pretty cold.
my motor is new and too hard to turn by hand, my harmonic balancer has a supercharger pulley attached and comes close to the radiator.

You need to get the clearances reasonably spot on with a solid cam and they will continue to make some noise even when correctly adjusted so no, not while running. With a cast iron block and head I've found minimal if any change between hot and cold lash, I guess alloy would be different.

You can always heat it up by running it without the radiator anyway, warm it up and shut it off no problems. Just don't overheat it!

Its easy to remember the sequence as well..

The rocking is opposite to the adjusting rocker 1-6, 2-5, 3-4 and vice versa.
You see which one comes next by looking at the leads on the dizzy.

if you think this is confusing, come and adjust the valves on a D12D Volvo engine with me! then you can come and try a Volvo with VEB+

I usually tweak them with the engine off, then do final adjustments with it going.

I have a rocker cover with the top cut off, makes things a bit cleaner.

ok, i set them the other night but i think i did it wrong, i dont know were i got the idea but instead of using that seven law i went through in firing order setting one then hitting the button till the rocker on that cylinder started to open the exhuast valve and then moving to the next cylinder.
i found doing it this way that the piston was at the top of the next cylinder when the ex valve just started to open on the other.
i have no way to turn my motor by hand so i just got a piece of wire and cut it in two then put some terminals on and a momentary switch button, i stuck one wire with a ring terminal to the alternator and put the other one on the starter motor were the start wire goes on, i stuck the last part of the wire near the switch together with some heatshrink tube to make it less likely to get tangled in something, it made the whole thing quick and easy once i got the hang of giving the button quick taps.
