Just wondering how many use the internal bonnet release cable ???
Mines starting to give me a bit of trouble and I'm considering going back
to the standard setup....Is there any advantage in the internal release ?

Hi

Only the security aspect - particularly when fitted with the security box over the release mechanism under the hood.

ok here goes.

my catch

the standard catch. first i filled all the holes (circled red) except for the safety latch hole and the actual latch hole. the latch has a small sorta hook (circled green) that rides in a slot to stop the latch from falling away from the bonnet catch. i had to make a piece underneath to do the same job (outlined in green in the next pic)

i also had to weld a small angle (red outline) with a hole in it onto the latch part (white outline) so i could put a solid rod through with a 90 degree bend through it, the end of the rod is held in with a collet. i also added the bolt as an adjustable stop to limit travel of the latch.

a little bit of meat had to be cut out of the side of the catch to give clearance to the steel rod.

the other end of the rod is connected to an old starter motor solenoid mounted in a bracket welded up behind the drivers side headlight. the solenoid has an internal spring which is why you need the solid rod and not a cable. the spring from underneath the catch is removed and the solenoid provides the "spring" via the rod to shut the latch when you close the bonnet. a push button switch is in the glovebox wired to the solenoid through a relay. hit the button, the solenoid pulls the rod, which pulls the catch and the bonet pops.

hope this helps. any questions just ask me.

hate to bump but forgot to add. if battery is flat, you just stick your hand up its nose behind the grill and can operate the latch via the stop bolt.
