Yep... heard it too... and believed it for years

But I worked for a Dana/BTR/BW distributor last year and sold alot of gearsets and parts for them

And they were all BW75's

Check the C+P for the markings

I'm sure others will confirm or refute.. .and I'm happy to be wrong

I have a copy of a spreadsheet I came across made by a guy who worked for BTR back in the day that I'm basing my remarks on

News to me too so I had a look in "60 Years of Holden".

VL - BW M75, Small and Large Salisbury

VN - BW M75

VP - BW M75. BW M76

VR - BW M75, BW M76

VS - BW M75, BW M76, BW M80

VT - BW M76, BW M80

VU - BW M80

VX - BW M80

VY - BW M80

VZ - BW M80

I couldn't find the specs for the one tonners.

Haha, finally someone who agrees with me! Measure the crownwheel diameter from any live axle Commodore Borg Warner and you get 7.5", thats an M75. Measure one from an EF or so Falcon and you get 7.8", thats an M78 (although the M75 and M78 gearsets share the same internal diameter and thus centre unlike the M80).

Don't try to tell the Commodore boys this though, they will tell you until they're blue in the face that being 4 spider/28 spline makes it an M78.

I couldn't find the specs for the one tonners.

The Crewman & One Tonner live axle diffs were designated as Dana brand. The V6 had an M78 centre & the V8 had an M86. This was mentioned in the text section of VY but didn't make it to the diff chart.

These days BW & Dana are one in the same.

No Commodore diffs are BW78's
They are all BW75's... unless its a VZ ute.. .then you got a 78
Skylines are 75's also

Fords have 78's in them

Its written on the crownwheel
0575 for a 75 series
0578 for a 78 series

So did Ford always run the 78 series from the XD or from a different model?

My Dana info starts at Ford EA

Prior to that weren't that a different style of BW unit ?

Similar but not exactly the same

Though my bearing kit listing is same from XR-EA BW75

Alot of EA-B were still 75's

So no not all Fords are 78's... though MOST from EB series 2 on were... but not all

Up to XF at least were M75s (two spider 25 spline variety). Not sure how far they go back but even a lot of the Valiants had these as well

I just got quoted $1,600 to remove and add all pick up points to the R31 borg warner diff, Banjo supplied, new bearings, fill and redrill axles and discs to Torana stud pattern ready to bolt in by Difftrans, Windsor,

Is this about right as it's a ittle more then I was expecting?

A bit expensive. I just had something very similar done to a cdore BW, except for the axle stud filling and drilling, though I needed the housing shortened and had the LSD machined all for $1200. I would have thought 1100 for yours. Give Ian a ring at Kreative Enterprises in Windsor for a quote. He's great to deal with and knows his stuff. He's a qualifier engineer too.

A little after getting my first quote I remembered buying some parts of Luke who works at Kreative Enterprises, I have been in contact with him and I should have a price Tuesday.

Quote from Kreative Ent for R31 skyline borg warner diff to Torana

It worked out cheaper to supply the brackets from McDonald brothers at a cost of $250.00 rather then find a old Banjo or useing your own banjo.

I dealt with Luke, very freindly and helpful.

Remove brackets from Borg Warner which you could do yourself: $100

Stripping of diff which you could do yourself: $100

Welding of new brackets onto Borg warner: $300

Fill and redrill axles to Torana stud pattern: $150 each

New Bearings: $60 each

Re stud Discs to Torana stud pattern: $100 each

$1120 or $920 if you do a little work yourself, $800 if you reuse/repack the bearings.

I have a idea, EA falcon watts linkage diff hat fitted to skyline diff? Would the falcon diff hat fit skyline diff?

AFAIK the hats are interchangeable.

If there is room between the diff, tank and exhaust for a ford watts link is another story.

There are also aftermarket Watts Linkage kits for BW diffs.

I have one of the Falcon covers and was planning to use it one day (not enough room there but that can be resolved). However I did a few measurements recently and the Skyline diff centre doesn't sit in the right spot - the centre pivot would end up significantly off to one side so it won't work. If I ever get around to a watts link I think I'd mount the outer ends to the diff and the centre to the body/chassis.

On the subject of the Watts Link wouldn't you want parallel upper arms for this to work properly ?

Hi Anthony, I had same problem fitting these discs to a shortened 9", I redrilled the calliper brackets to the only possy they don't foul on anything = around 4--5 o-clock position, Which also made the standard LJ handbrake cables the perfect length... So using the BW maybe all that's needed it to elongate the 4 holes to move bracket slightly......
