In this conversion it used the sunbird handbrake setup. I don't want to remove the centre console and want to keep the floor handbrake. Can this still be done?

Yep I kept the standard hand brake setup. Used the Skyline cables at the diff, cut the bracket on the outside of the lower arm mounts off and welded on a new one a few inches further back to suit the slightly shorter Skyline cables. Then it was just a matter of finding a cable to complete the loop, I had collected so many diff parts by that stage that I found a Falcon one did the job nicely but it would be very easy to get one made.

So i can put my commodore brakes on these diffs but might have issues with them fouling on the shocks. I know everyone will say to use the skyline brakes but i already have new rotors and have rebuilt the calipers.

Bolt one on and find out, won't take long. If it clears the shock and you can get the handbrake cable to it, should be fine.

without sticking my head under the car, if the calipers hit the shocks you could try swapping the backing plates left to right and put the calipers on the front of the axle?

the skyline and commodore bolt pattern for the backing plates/bearing retainers is the same, but are at different angles, so the commodore backing plates will need to be redrilled. (i remember one hole will line up)

I think he is talking about mounting the Commodore brakes on the Skyline angle without modification. I just went and had a look at the old discs though, and the Commodore ones are a lot deeper offset so I'm pretty sure the calipers wouldn't fit around the shocks. Dunno what would happen if swapped left to right, they'd be sitting very low...

Thanks guys, ill just have to have a look when i get home in a week to see. 76lxhatch, wouldn't the mounting position for the calipers need to be different in order to take the deeper offset of the rotors? (is that what you mean?)So the issues with rotating the tube end caliper mounts would be that the hand brake would need to be altered and the bleed nipple would be in the wrong position?

It's probably worth me just rebuilding the skyline brakes. Oh well...

The Skyline and Commodore calipers are very very similar, only difference is the built-in handbrake on the Skyline ones, bleed nipples in same place. The Skyline mounting position is rotated maybe 25 degrees (at a wild guess) up at the rear compared to Commodore, no issue with bleeding. The Commodore calipers would sit further inboard due to the disc offset I reckon, although perhaps the axle flange position makes up for some or all of this?

edit: looking at Rory's pic on the previous page, it looks like he has had the flange on the end of the housing rotated almost back to Commodore position, mine are standard R31:

Reading some info on these diffs some have mentioned the welds between the center housing and axle tubes were insufficient, i was thinking of having the tubes cut off and welded back on the the mounts vertical on the forward side of the diff, and swapping the calipers left to right.

Aussie diffs aren't recommending this conversion anymore!
They seem to prefer the commodore over the skyline.

Silly me!......i thought they were both the same!....but one didn't need shortening?

They are exactly the same housing (besides length) under all the brackets. Maybe something to do with having to change the stud pattern? Seems you'd have to anyway unless you want to be buying custom wheels to get the right offset in Commodore pattern. Narrowing the housing is pretty easy if you just do one side and use both short VN axles - hmm, I wonder if centering the housing like this allows more of the top arm brackets to be welded to the axle tubes rather than the cast centre?

2 Pintara diffs I pulled both had 25 spline axles..1 manual and one auto....who knows..maybe production line stuff.

mine was 28 spline 4.11:1

cant remember now manual or auto, but its what all the commo guys go for to get the 4.1 ratio..

how much more do they make in cutting down the diff??? I think there is your answer.
Just supply an R31 diff and they have to sort it for you.

Hey guys great info on this conversion. Does anyone know if one was to get the axles changed and discs redrilled to suit the original torana pattern whether the original 13" torana wheels would fit over the skyline rear calipers?

What length are the skyline axles?
i assume they would be the same length as a9x?

I doubt it, long and short axles as with the Commodore Borg Warners, rather than equal length like the Salisburys

Ah, yup. Blond moment sorry.

So does someone have some lengths handy from a conversion?
I seem to remember 660mm as the short one and used a VN short as the long but both being 10mm short overall.

Hey guys called up 2 well known diff shops in the keysborough and dandenong areas asking about prices to convert the r31 diff. They both said the same thing that they do not recommend this conversion. Their words were that it would not pass an engineer, and that it wasn't the right way to do it. One shop pretty much said he would refuse to change the pattern on the exisitng r31 axles... Their answer was to make billet axles but then just to weld on the brackets and new axles without touching the centre or diff gears would cost almost $1500. They both recommended Cutting down a vn diff to fit quoted me around $900 to do this and weld on the brackets, but then your stuck with commodore stud pattern so dunno now.
