Anyone know?..I thought the LS1 was less than 2/3 the weight of a 308 cast iron engine.

These are the figures I have.
LS2 auto dressed 443 lbs/201 kg
LS1 auto dressed 458 lbs/208 kg
308 dry 495 lbs/225 kg
SBC Steel and alloy heads 500 lbs/227 kg
LT1 auto dressed 564 lbs/256 kg
SBC Steel heads and manifold 575 lbs/261 kg
Dressed weight includes the intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, all necessary belts including accessory belts, and fluids. Note that the weights quoted for automatic are lighter dues to the difference between the weight of a flex plate verses a flywheel.

Weird that a full alloy engine weights just 20 kgs less than a 308 cast iron...need more info on that one.

The dressed figures include cast iron exhaust manifolds, oil etc.
The 308 is dry and does not specify if it includes exhaust manifolds etc. I would expect a dressed 308 to weigh about 10 kg lighter than a dressed SBC with cast iron heads and cast iron inlet manifold. That would put the 308 at around 250 kg which would be 49 kg heavier than an LS2.
If someone wants to weigh a 308 without exhaust manifolds but with alternator,water pump, starter, inlet and carb I can do the same with the LS2 next time it is out of the car which will be in the next couple of weeks.

The numbers i was given,
Dry shipping weight
LS1=192 kg
LS2=185kg
308=240kg
That makes the LS1/2 lighter than a 6cyl 202 and centre of gravity of engine will be lower and further back compared to 202.I always thought Torana LX/UC handled better with lighter 6 compared to V8.
Also you could probably put a much lighter flywheel on the LS engine as Torana is significantly lighter than commodore without affecting it as a daily driver.

That thread popped up on the LS1 forum...
I would have thought the LS1 would be heaps lighter than a 5L...
