Hey hanra,,i recall that SMP Torana (nice) gettin around my neck of the woods around about the years you mention.
I was under the impression it got sideways into a gutter or something?same car?

When my mate owned it, he put it sideways into a gutter and damaged a rim and the air dam. I think it scared him after that and he wanted to sell it.

x-factor read the SMP Registar, should give you some idea about the SMP LJ's, they are rare in that colour and there was a Prototype V8 one in early 1972, but GMH say was destroyed

cheers mate

The answer is possibly very simple.
The Orange car survived because Joe was using it. The other two prototypes, Pink and White ones, had been returned to 6 cylinder GTRs, the fact they had quarter filler caps meant nothing. Now ono one knows why they were not sold, they could have been as both were returned to GTR spec, but once the LH was released the were obsolete Engineering test material, destined to be destroyed. Torana Tough covers this in detail.
But Allan there was only ever one SMP V8 Engineering prototype.

There is a every low production one here in the west but I am sworn to secrecy as it could easily grow legs where it is located.

This very low production 72 SMP XU-1 has been lightened by cutting holes in the inner structure panels and likely raced on tarmack from the bent floor pans, the owner knows very little of its past so anything is possible, I think I had a look in the boot for the signs of a big tank, it was a while ago now.

The owner has talked of selling it at the right price.

Mike was it a Adelaide Built LJ XU-1 or a Brisbane Built LJ XU-1 ?????????

I think it was an Adelaide one as due to Holden's price equalisation policy which was in place since the 1920's all new XU-1's sold in WA were Adelaide ones, the only Brisbane ones here were driven here or purchased interstate.

As I said I am sworn to secrecy and I will sticking to my agreement with the owner, not to give away the whereabouts of this car, he knows what it is and so does Holden.
On the other hand if you are a genuine buyer PM me your phone number and I will pass it on to him.

Mike

Absolutely fascinating read regarding these SMP cars. I am in contact with a fellow that in the last couple of days has bought what he claims to be a 1 owner SMP XU-1. His wife had the deciding vote on the purchase of either the SMP XU-1 or his choice of an A9X sedan. He claims the car was owned by an elderly gentleman who bought the car from his local dealer. The car has remained in that area all of its life.
