I am looking down the path of improving my ignition system.
I will be using the later standard electronic distributor and I know about the wiring change needed.
I was wondering what people's experiance has been with various coils availiable?
I must retain the female type HT coil lead connection so I was thinking of using the GT40 coil.
Any opinions?

Please don't go down the Bosch plastic wheel chock/speed hump path.

Bosch SU12 is an option but it appears the others may perform better?

The MSD Blaster 2 is indeed a female connection.
I have been told to buy the standard holden CC200 champion coil. But unfortunately it is the HEI male connection.
I range the Champion tech help line and was advised that the CC200 has a primary coil resistance of 0.6 ohms and the alternative for a female connection on a HEI system was a CC213 with 0.5 ohms.
The Blaster is 0.7 ohms.
The Blaster is about $80-90
CC200 is about $30-35
CC213 is about $280-290.-----OMG.
I think I will go for the CC200 and have a new MAGNACOR HT lead custom made for the male coil and female cap. The remainder of the leads are MAGNACOR.

It says in the instructions that you have to mount it vertically so i put it under the dash, in the car, also away from heat there.
MY old bosh little black one burnt out on me, cant say that i was impressed with the price of a tow truck on a friday morning at 1am.

Hi evan, I'm running the transformer type coil at the moment. Howcome you say they are rubbish? Should I possibly scrap that for the oil filled type coil?. When you did, did you notice any improvements?

It's more to do with how long they last.
I've seen them fail at 6 months.

Points systems should not use the transformer style.
Why? Because they will over heat if you stop the engine and leave the ignition ON. Because if the points are closed, current will flow through the transformer and it will over heat and melt.
I believe the Electronic ignition system will not flow current through the coil unless the engine is turning over.
The canister style, oil immersed coils can dissipate the first scenario heat better and last longer for this reason.

I think for that reason, people running the transformer epoxy filled type(like myself) should keep a spare coil in the boot or something just in case. I better get on taking my own advice then

In applications such as off-road, marine or other harsh conditions, the MSD Blaster High Vibration Coil is the best choice. The sturdy metal housing of the High Vibration Coil is completely potted with a premium grade epoxy to completely encase the coil's primary and secondary windings. This method of construction is designed to protect the coil's internal components from high and low frequency vibrations that are commonly experienced in racing.
To form the spark plug tower, alkyd material was used for its high dielectric characteristics. This special material will not carbon track when high voltage is passed across its surface making it ideal for coil tower applications. The primary coil terminals are made of brass and are spaced far apart to prevent any possibility of arcing to ground. For convenience, a standard canister type coil mount, MSD8213, can be used plus the coil can be mounted in any position.

I have gone with the stock dist cap and XD/XE rotor so I can us the Magnacor 10mm leads I have.
I am using a CC200 coil (stock early commodore HEI) and I am getting a new Coil to dist cap lead made to convert from the male coil connection to the cap's female connection.
Should look good!
