A big thanks for the people at the Motel for making a newbie feel welcome. I didn't realise that there were many forum members there and wished I had of found out more of your forum names to better remember the weekend.
A massive thanks to the guys at the HVTC! What an effort it must have been to organise a fantastic event. I was overwhelmed at times on the Sunday with so many Toranas in the 1 place and how different they all were to each other! I think there were 227 Toranas displayed and a few more in the car parks and I still didn't see them all. I didn't always remember that some of the cars were forum member's cars at the time and wished that I had met a more of you on the day.
I loved the fact that there were cars worth more than my house all the way down to the daily drivers. What a truly great combination! There has been so much time, care, $$$ and more importantly, imagination spent on Toranas! It was well worth the money spent on the weekend to able to attend an event like this. I'll be back!!!
The drive home was a first. I have never seen it raining mud! I almost ran out of water in the washer bottle and it was full before I left on Friday! I washed my VT on Saturday for the first time in 4 months and it now looks like it has never been washed at all!
Cheers,
Brett
PS. Herne, do you like my paragraphs???

Chris, we should hear from Jeremy perhaps today if he is back at work. He has a home PC but I need to get over there and sort out some bugs he has with it. This will happen soon!
I am not at all sure I can do justice to TALES FROM THE ESKY because I would have to tone down the colourful language lol.
Here is a snippet but I am sure it will lose something in the translation. I swear you guys are trying to get me into trouble here

Jeremy advised, whilst performing a certain act with ones wife or g/f and holding her by the hair one should try deliberately calling her by the wrong name and see how long you can stay in the saddle for................................ Ummm nuff said I think.
On a serious note thanks to all the Organisers, Sponsors, Security staff and the Motel people. Thanks to all those who attended for giving us all a good time. Special thanks to a lady from the HVTC who made a point of coming over and thanking us for participating as we were warming up our engines getting ready to leave, that was a real nice touch. Thanks to the NSW Police Dept who appeared to leave us alone - well done, I am sure we were being observed!
A very special thanks to all the forum guys and others I met, it was great.
PS, Oh yes Toddles, I do like your paragraphs, they make for easy reading rather than one large block of text. Infact I often don't bother reading all when its a large block, I prefer to just skim over it.

Cheers
Herne

The problem also is people see the cars standing there & come over for a look, they are not in
enthusiasts they are just out for the day around Mewcastle.
If they had to pay to come & have a look you would get a different lot of people, no bikes scooters & surf boaards etc.
Half of them are just passing through.
Thats just my take on it.

Well, Toranafest is over for another year.

I would have replied on here sooner, but I was (and still am) absolutely shattered..
It's great to see so many positive comments about the show. There is an enormous amount of organising that goes into Toranafest and it is great to see that our efforts are appreciated. To all of the club's members, I would like to give a big thank you to. The guys, and gals work very hard to make it happen and, as I say to them, all the preparation in the world, will come unstuck if we mess up on the day. I think that we pretty much got it right..
To all the interstate guys, many of which are part of this forum, thank you so much for your support. It is the support of you guys that truly make Toranafest a national event.

To ezy 09s and IDO 09s : The comments made about the quality of cars was, IMO, a little shallow. There are a lot of people out there that make a lot of effort in getting there cars to Toranafest and, as stated, Toranafest is for all Toranas!!
I, and many others love the fact that this is a car show that has everything from Race Cars, Race Replicas, Drag Cars, Show Cars as well as Daily Drivers. It shows the public just how diverse this little car of ours is and this is what Toranafest is about. The broad spectrum of our cars.
To Litre8: Howard, Bruce Nowacki was pretty impressed with your beast!! He couldnt believe his eyes when he saw under the bonnet of your car!!
Re the comments about people and kids: What can you do?? Some people just have no respect for other peoples property.

Re the awards: Chris, I would like to know what was said.. Please PM me.
The reason that we dropped Original and Restored was because there is a big fat blurry line between the two. To capture them both we went with Authentic category.
I had one gentleman ask me before the Trophy Presentations, can one, dispute a decision about a trophy winner? To which I said, no! I cannot believe how much importance some people place on a $20 trophy!!

I have to say that this is one area that is probably the biggest, pain in the arse part of the whole event. I for one, would like to see an entrants type trophy, as I reckon you all deserve trophies!! Again we will look at this in the hope of improving it for next year.
To Pops SS: Bazza, well done!! Hopefully I will have my SS ready for next year, and give you a bit of competition!! Well done on getting the Hubcaps too!!

To Mitchq: Mate, it was great to see the Torailer, even if it was very brief!! It is a credit to you, and thanks for the stickers.
To BCR4ZY: The comment about the "gap" in the rear, I wasn't too happy about that either and what it will mean is that we just need to tweak who goes where. By the time that I had realised what was happening, we had pretty much gotten all of the entrants in. It was my intention that that area will be filled completely, but it was reserved for couple of the clubs and they didnt have the numbers that they indicated to me.
One way we will hopefully fix this will be a change to the entry form that will include the club you are with. That way we will have an accurate count of the club entrants.
This is the second year that we have used the area and we are still learning on how to get the best possible use out of the area. I think that having cars back to back allowed clubs to set up an area in between the cars. I also think that the addition of the market stalls around the park added to the day and I know that about 99% of them were very happy.
A couple of real good positives to come out of Toranafest:
The Newcastle Council wants to talk to us about council sponsorship! That is a huge plus for the show. We will also be talking to them about the installation of extra power boxes, etc.

With the Dinner on the Friday night and Toranafest, the likes of Bob Morris, Sandra Bennett, Bruce and Ned Nowacki, and Des West have all showed interest in joining us again next year!! I also know that Bev Brock had an absolutely great weekend and just loved the car show on Sunday.

If youre interested here is the footage that was played on the NBN news on Monday night:
http://www.nbntv.com...s-to-newcastle/
When I get a chance, I will post up the winners list so everyone can see which cars one what awards. Probably on the weekend.. need to find the folder with the results..
What does 2009 hold?? You will have to wait and see I can tell you that we wont be resting on our past successors!!

Cheers
Mick

Mick, you deserve a well earned rest and also the Nobel Prize for Advancing the Torana Cause.
Thanks Howard...
I am very passionate about these cars of ours, and Toranafest. It's a great event that, I feel does cater for all Torana owners, regardless if you own a bog stock UC Sunbird

cheers

Well I do have quite a bit to say but first and foremost

My wife and I organised our Wattle Time Rally here in Cootamundra in 2007 with 112 cars attending and the pre-rally work load was fairly heavy so I can understand, well almost understand how much has gone into Toranafest 2008.
In chronological order :-
The drive up with Alan (Herne) who organised the meeting places etc was tops. We got a few Beep Beeps from passing motorists and some nice comments from lookers when we had stopped.
Alan's car is very schmick and he tells me there is more to do.
We were made welcome by the staff at the Motto Farm Motel and they were fantastic over the entire weekend.
Meals were A1 and lots of it.
Don't ask for the BIG BREAKFAST or the MIXED GRILL unless you are VERY hungry.

Thanks to Graham (LX5008) were came around to the motel on a number of occassions to welcome Toranafest Travellers and the organised security gave us peace of mind. Thanks mate

What a night it was on Friday.
Despite one noisy obnoxious person and those ignorant and rude people who talked while Fred Gibson and Harry were giving their informative and enthralling speeches, the night was fantastic and well worth the cost.

AND what a GREAT sort is Bev Brock

AND on Sunday Bev also took the time to walk quite a distance to my car to sign the glovebox and to be photo'ed with me.

The cruise on Saturday showed those who didn't know, the route into Newcastle and the get-together at the final destination was good.

I thought I would get into the venue early to beat the rush but there were already quite a few there and the finally tally I believe was 227.
Thanks to all of the helpers who directed entrants to their parking possys.
Music of the era helped to create a fantastic atmosphere and Harry was very accommodating at his "tent shop".

To say I was a bit dumbfounded and humble at winning 2 trophies is understating it.
Then again I should have won 3 because Toddles Martin announced over the PA that "the winner is Barry Gavin, the ugliest Torana Driver in NSW"
So why didn't I get one for that category ?
The 2 trophies were for "Best Individual Display" and "Best Authentic LX/UC 2 Door"
Damn nice trophies and a lot better than those "cup" types.
The other win I had on the day was when a fella came to have a look at my car and asked if I wanted a set of 4 NOS SS hubcaps still in their Holden boxes.

Do I what

I did pay a very reasonable price for them and I was not about to insult him by offering a pittance.
Sorry Graham, they will be staying at my place but as agreed if they do need to be sold then I will call you.
Our trip back was made even better when we called in to see Bruce (threeblindmice) and John (Frash da Bucket) at Katoomba and was treated to a breakfast of snags and buns

John, Bruce, Gary & me

Final destination in Katoomba was the "3 Sisters" although they cannot be photographed with the cars as a foreground, this pic turned out OK.
Good thing there were no parking police around but we were only there for a matter of minutes for the photo shoot.

John (Frash da Bucket), Bruce (threeblindmice) and Gary (LC69GTR)

After bidding the fellas good-bye we headed off to Bathurst to go around the track and check out the museum.

We copped the "raining mud" on the way home but that did not damper my enjoyment of the weekend

Thanks again to the HVTC and to Gary (LC69GTR) for keeping me company for the trip.
Bloody good time

Regards ............. Barry

Congrats on the trophies, Barry. It's always nice to know that other people appreciate your car... Obviously you didn't go to Newcastle to scoop as many trophies as possible, but its great to come home with some
Good score with the hubcaps aswell. They will finish your SS beautifully.
That said, is there a list of the trophy winners?
Tim
Mick and Tim

I have the Trophy Winners List and will type it up and pass it on to Mick for Publication.
The ANSMA Judges were thoroughly professional and had their trophies list to me neat and tidy!
As for the Most Authentic mmmmm the judging list was like hyroglyphics but given the number of clubs that assisted it was good as it showed that we all had different ideas as to what makes most authentic. In the end the process was to see where the individuals agreed on a car or cars and tally the most votes.
A little bit more assistance from other clubs would be appreciated next year please. Overall my thanks to those who assisted especially the Great Oz and Les White and special thanks to Dave Savage and the boys from the Qld XU1 Club and others who I unfortunately was unable to stop and talk to my thanks again to you all you know who you were.
On the issue of the judging the ANSMA guys were impressed with the number and quality of the cars and were extremely happy that they did not have to do the most authentic category which is always problematic.
And by the way Barry I wanted a swab done on your Trophy Win but I was threatened by the other judges so I gave up. Congratulations

Feedback is welcome and we will try and adjust categories and trophies for next year so that someday we will get it right? (Never will I bet!!!) Most years past Mick McC and Peter (Borat) Morris did the trophy tallies and voting verifications and they always looked stressed and upset at the end of the day, but this year they outnumbered me and it was my turn to be upset and stressed. So if I did not seem too happy to those around me blame them B&$$$$ds!
Many thanks to Mel and his wife being the DJ's for the day and to Todd "The Mouth" Martin, damn that guy could talk under water with a mouth full of marbles and concrete!

Absolutely!
Well I am absolutely jealous I have probably never seen as many toranas in my life as were there on the that day.
And as for that Black A9X shown above....well that has to be one of the best looking cars ever and definitely my pic so far of all the cars shown in the thread so far.

Thanks to everybody for the good feedback on my sh!tbox ( smp xu1 ) just a few things to chase up & i'll be happy enough with it just to thrash it around.

A big thanks to my wife ( suzi ) & mate ( nick ) for the help over the last 2/3 months to get it ready , the bare shell sat in my shed for 15 months without being touched.
Another thanks to Tuffgong/Bathurst32d ( johnny ) for lending me some new dress trims for the show.
I think that arriving earlier this year was a great idea as my mate and i were still rooted from respraying the engine bay the thursday night and then loading the car for the drive down. It also left heaps of time for replenishing the liquids !

i see your problem there, but i must say headbutt who is three years old is a big enthusiuast on the torana side of thing and knows better not to touch any cars, headbutt jnr she is two years old and is more on the monaro side of things ,it all comes down to way the parents have bought there children up,to wheather they have have respect for other peoples toys, when your in trade of building cars the respect quickly wipes of onto your children

Barry (Pops-ss) most impressed with your photos and a great report. Well done. Loved the line up of Toranas waiting at the traffic light photo. Looks like all had a great time.
Well said. Loved the display with the car, especially the washing powder from 1968 that had the "Win a Torana" Competition on the box
