G'day

The M20 4 speed behind my red 202 is seemingly on it's way out and I wouldn't mind putting a 5 speed box behind the engine.
Before you say I should go with a supra box, I definitely cannot afford this conversion at the moment. So if a VK box isn't too hard or expensive to fit I would like to maybe go with that option.
What is required to install one of these gearboxes and what sort of price should you expect to pay for a gearbox in used condition?

Cheers

Its a waste of time...it uses a cable clutch..the tail shaft has to be shortened 2 inches and at the end you get a box that is fairly weak....I did it once..the car got stolen and when i got it back the box was stuck in 3rd.

It would be ok if you drove it like you had Miss Daisy in the back...but who does that?

Sometimes the m76 isn't pissweak as everyone says. I thrashed the shit out of mine for 15,000kms with no issues other than mutilated uni joints. It's now behind a mild 202 and hasn't had a problem yet.

Well the M20 isn't that strong of a box either is it? How would the two compare?
Even if it isn't that strong, it isn't like I thrash the shit out of my car dumping the clutch and doing burnouts everywhere. And I would really like an overdrive gear.

it isn't as bad as the one that was in the VH...at least they reckoned the VK box could handle a 202.

I just think its too much trouble for the result...but you are right..a 5th gear is nice.

The boy has one in his LH behind a 186, was in it when we bought it, doesn't like going from 3rd to 2nd unless you are going slow for the corners, don't know if normal or needs some TLC but it will do him till he gets his P's and open license and kills it.

I will be fitting one to my LJ along with the 3.08 diff.
I believe the key is the mainshaft preload on assembly.

I had a BW 5 speed behind my injected 202 in my old VK calais, I thrashed the crap out of that car, and it kept kicking along, was always a bit hard to get from 3rd to second on the downshift when it was cold, once it warmed up it was fine.

Celica box conversion is not all that expensive, look around, there are heaps for sale these days.

I had a VK with one, only problem I ever had was shifting as others have mentioned - I think it was pretty easy to destroy the synchros (not using the clutch may have had something to do with it! :D ). But weren't the injected VKs auto only because Holden didn't think the 5 speed could handle the extra power? I agree that the Toyota conversion should be very cheap as a second hand unit so it might not be out of your price range at all.

I think you could get a 4 speed borg warner box behind the inj motor, i may be wrong but thats what I thought (I built mine from boxes of parts and a shell, all purchased for $150)

Not that I'm aware of but I could be wrong too, it's been known to happen...

According to the good book....the injected 202 was auto only...and was the base engine on the Calais.

In fact the book sort of contradicts itself....In the wording it says....The 3.3 litre L6 engine, equipped with EST, is the base engine for for SL and Berlina, and the 3.3 litre L6 with EFI is the base engine for the Calais models. The 3 speed trimatic is STD on Calais and Berlina and available as an option on the SL. The torquemaster 4 speed is STD on SL.

So from that..is is possible to draw the conclusion you could get an SL with an EFI 202 in it...even though I have never seen or heard of one...in fact I have only seen Berlinas with it..and all auto.

it then goes on to show charts that show that you could get an SL with EFI...but the chart gives the only trans option as tri matic...and 3.08 diff.

All up that was a waste of typing..I cleared nothing up and rabbited on for a few meaningless sentences.

Where have you been lately kirk?

Didnt see you at toranafest, and havent come across the poo brown mobile for a while!

Was it possible in the 80s to order cars the same way you can now, ie. optioned with alternate components for a price?

Been away..was at Toranafest..just...getting ready to go again

You are right...Its possibly that things were a bit more dollar driven or maybe even customer focused back then..if you had $$$ then you got what you wanted....where as now..if you want special orders its a good 6 months.

My VK SL sedan had the EFI 3.3/Trimatic from the factory.

The 5 speeds are always slightly difficult to change down to 2nd, but that can be partially fixed with new tranny fluid or rev matching when you change down. They absolutely hate going into 1st at anything about about 5kmh though :tease:

It's good to know this as i thought the boys box was ready for a rebuild (something he can do without at the moment).

Yeah I thought mine had issues until dad explained his old one was like that from new. I think as they wear more or get more power fed into them they may actually go into 2nd and 1st easier for some reason. Since putting the box behind a mild 202 its been able to go into first at anything up to about 25kmh, and 2nd seems a bit easier as well. No idea why this would be though.
