Smith Brothers Pushrods
Adjustable/Non-Adjustable
If you want the ABSOLUTE BEST pushrods, Smith Brothers pushrods are available for ANY passenger car domestic or foreign, antique, tractor, motorcycle (except Indian), or Industrial. Because of Smith Brothers' superior quality, the pushrods are generally lighter and will decrease valvetrain weight. These pushrods come in stock length and ANY shorter or longer length you need. In most cases, for special needs, we can even supply you pushrods within 24 hours. On drop-ship or overnight deliveries, there is an additional cost.

For engines where oil to the valvetrain needs to be restricted, Smith Brothers Pushrods can be ordered with the restriction in the pushrods at No extra cost. This is especially useful with mechanical and roller cams. Normal pushrods have .080 oil hole diameters, but can be ordered in .040 and .030.

Silver solder or liquid metal is the go I am told and redrill them at the smaller size.

My hidden engineer type says he can silver solder them up..and redrill and size I want...plus do the catch can outlets to the tops of the tappet covers...Will have that done later in the week...and fit the std volume oil pump..hopefully thats that!

What about the equaliser ?

Looking at the oil...with condensation....that came out of my catch can there is no way in hell I would connect it back straight to the sump.

X2

This is what i drained out of my catch can, running a PCV valve (factory position in manifold) plus a extraction hose running to the air intake pipe.

The silver container is a standard aerosol spray paint can lid, the darker spots are the "only" oil, the rest is water, not good at the bottom of your sump !

How are you going to get water out of the tappet covers in the sump ?

What about the equaliser ?

General opinion is it will equalise itself......if the breathers are at the top.

My mate used to have a pipe from the front of each rocker cover to the sump. This was on his 253 speedway car. Seems pretty simple and worked.
has anyone here done this ?

Evan.

I will go with 82911 on this one.

"An engine is an air pump, both top and bottom, any blow by from the induction and compression process has to be vented to atmosphere provided the holes are large enough to relieve the pressure adequately. The only other proviso is that the vent is above a level that oil reaches, otherwise oil will be pumped too."

So instead of a vent out of the sump, at the highest point, do we drill and tap the block above where the sump meets the block.

I like the idea of the drains from low on the rocker cover back to the bottom end. Where would you plumb these back in? I started making a system that would drain back into the fuel pump hole, but didn't finish this after the modified lifters and relocated breathers went a long way toward solving the problem.
But I haven't fixed it completely.
Earlier this year (sorry - last year - 08) at Phillip Island my catch tank filled up again, this was my fault, I hadn't drained it since I did the VN head upgrade toward the end of 07. Since then i had done over an hour at Calder, 4 x 15 minute sessions at P.I. a few Hillclimbs and then another 12 laps of P.I. on the day it happened, so close to 3 hours of racing, so a big improvement from my first time out where about 1 litre per lap was going into the can....

But it still happens and after restricting the oil going to the top, and making sure the breathers are out of the way of the oil as much as possible, I guess the only thing left is to get more oil to drain back to the sump. The drain holes in the VN heads aren't real big.

Do you run a dipstick Rory? I run a breather tube from my dipstick tube into a coke bottle just so the sump can breathe if it needs to, occasionally this gets a touch of oil in it, but you have to look hard to see it.

We should just ring someone like Pat Purcell or Rob Hand, and see what they did in the day. 830hp with the forbes?bartlett hatch, maybe see what he has ?

Shit Mick! 3 Hours???..I am lucky to be on for more than 1 mintue!!...Guess the plan will solve my problem in the interim but if I go circuit racing I will need to go further. My timing cover is a VN one so doesnt have a hole at the old fuel pump area.
The VN heads are slow drainers so Struggler tells me..this rings true as I read a thread on Aussie V8 by Wabbit where he drilled the drain holes out from 9mm to 10mm..simple mod but it actually is a 25% increase in hole size!!..I did it on my old VN heads but because we found one was cracked I flicked them for another set and didnt bloody do the drill mod! Doh!!...I run a dip stick..yes..I am taking the pushrods down from .080 to .035 and moving the breathers to the middle inner top of the tappet covers and fit the standard oil pump. I am pretty confident that will fix my problem for the time being. I am still not convinced the sump pumps up like a balloon though. The 80s/90s touring cars never ran drain backs to the sump so there is a way of countering the problem. Welby doesnt have the problem as he fitted his breathers where Tate was very specific for him to do.

P.S. I will post the pics of the covers and pushrods when Paul has finished them.

Put them on top. The oil gets flung against the sidewall of the cover more than the top.
ALSO u need at least -12 size hose for breathers. Smaller hose raises the pressure in the line and increases the airs ability to carry oil with it.
As for draining to the sump and condensation...................
If you have a permanent drain to the sump from the catch can then there is no problem. The oil blown by the breathers just returns to the sump. IT IS ONLY IF YOU LET THE ENGINE COOL OR SIT OVERNIGHT THAT THE CONDENSATION FORMS IN THE PUKE CAN. It is the heating of the air in the can and exposure to atmosphere that condenses the water vapour out of the air and it falls to the base of the can to mix with the oil.
If you don't run a return line, then you MUST drain your can after every session.
BTW those rocker covers are FOR SALE.... FRESH POWDER COAT $200.

Cheers Greg...

After much soul searching and advise from ex HDT guys and LP boys I decided to fit the breathers in the inside at the highest point with a baffle.
The pushrods with a .035 hole looked ridiculous so I punched them out to .050 ...think this will work as long as we don't idle it too long. Ripping out the H/V oil pump b4 the weekend and fitting the std size one as well.

Sorry Rory, haven't dug up that drawing.
I'm in/out bush again at present and the Torry stuff is packed away as i'm moving house.
I'll have another look on the weekend.

If you have time to experiment then try running the car with the HV oil pump. That way you will be able to see what difference the rocker cover and pushrod mods have made.
