I cant remember if Johns Orchid 5000 had a radio or if radios were standard in 5000s by 74, my jade green 5000 had a factory electric aerial in the top of the rear guard, but I did delete it and put a roof mounted unit in.
I dont profess to know-it-all however I cant remember any new Toranas ever having a factory roof aerial. I did however put one on every Torana I had using the very same tool that Rockoz mentions.
Ill make a point of catching up with John [Orchid 5000] when next time Im in Townsville and get some info for you regarding his old Torana, I think he sold it around 76-7.
Cheers.

A stereo dude would of been doing them day in day out, within an hour the hole would be cut, screen in and out and wired up too.

Ive always liked Orchid Metallic as it was the same color as my first car, a Bathurst 73 XU-1 brought new from Leach Motors in Brisbane in Oct 73.

Thanks for the pictures they are great, any info that you could find out would also be great. I had a LX SLR 5000 with roof aerial aswell. Maybe my car had no radio at all! it didn't have a console either. I managed to get a SS Factory Black console which i have always liked. Which i got for the bargain price of $90.00 and i have a Radio delete Factory black underdash for it aswell. Even 20 years ago SS consoles were $250.00 so the price they go for now (about $700 or so ) is cheap really. The XU-1 in Orchid is a great looking car. All the metallic rare colours look good on them now, but when i was younger no one wanted them. If the centre mount aerial was so popular maybe they should have been factory fitted.
Thanks for the info.

Wish i was around when toranas where new imagine Buying a brand new Torrie!
The good old days.
Drive past any high school in the late 70s early 80s and there were always heaps of Torries parked outside. All sporting P plates.
Inside were the XU-1s and SLRs of the teachers.
Trading Post, Friday arvo Sun and Mirror, and Saturdays Tele had bucket loads of them.
Never a shortage of twin SU or Stromie set ups. Triple Webers werent so easy, generally had to fork out a bit for them.
Rebuilds were always 60 thou over. There was always another block easy enough to find.
Country rubbish tips were first stop for parts. Then a check to see what your mates had, then off to the wreckers.
And the stuff we threw out.
Ah well. They always say you got 20/20 vision in hindsight.

I have some bits from an old mobile phone car kit which includes an aerial that sticks to either side of the glass, I'm thinking about hooking this up to try it since I'm scared to cut holes for a proper aerial. Obviously it won't be great but hopefully good enough for local reception.I wonder if I should put a roof mounted ariel in my car...

The length of the aerial is impressive in that first pic. No doubt pre FM
I hadn't noticed.. so i looked at the original pic and your right , that thing must be about 5 feet long. It was a great car! Check out the rear spoiler..
What do you reckon thats off. i could never figure it out, and have never seen one again.

spoiler looks like a vb commodore one
I thought that aswell, but it fit like a glove, maybe some sort of aftermarket one that never took off.

Door Vinyls, Bailey channel rubbers, weatherstrips.
Thanks for the door vinyls Boomfunk, very nice!
Chrome lock knobs and ferals ( I think thats what they are called )
I got new Windscreen corner pieces and they are the wrong size so beware, From Betta Auto Rubber, had to use my old ones, they are bigger.
Over the next couple of days gona bolt all the front end panels on straight & lined up, just got a panel bolt set from ebay pretty cool.
Bumpers after that.
