Being from the old school
A skid was a mark left on the road -- normaly in front of a dead roo
This was no doubt caused by the tyres ceasing there rotational movement, as i cant for the life of me think why you would go back a gear.
A wheelie was something you done on a push or motorbike, although my old man used to bag me about going out the road and doing "wheelies" -- no doubt a term caused by the lack of horspower in the motor vehicles of his day, and if anyone did manage to break traction it was something new, and there was no other name for it , or none they could think of at the time.

We do take the piss out of the young ones these days like " that wasn't a bad little skiddie you did there son"
Or
"I suppose you will go out the road and do some skids tonight" as the Hyundai backs out of the drive full of tetosterone crazed teenagers. These are derogatory meanings and have everything to do with the Hyundai's chances of laying down a good 200 metres of solid rubber -- nil --a fact which is well known to us and the teenagers, who know full well there is two V8's your drive.

Burnouts is burnouts, having a few king browns with the boys on a Sat night 30 k out of town -- or leaving your mates place cause there was a chick there you were trying to impress -- or getting rid of the last of the 265's with a good mate, cause you had the car booked in the next morning to get a new set anyway.

But like i said -- old school -- ay Rodomo!

a skid to me is either a lockup, line locker/attempt to do a "burnout" with something less powerful than the average vespa (yelling to the local bogan in the 84 laser "DOA SKIIIDD!")
burnout is a decient attempt with duelies happenin.
a "slide" is what you do in ya socks and a "quit the bourbon" is what ya do in ya jocks. :)

Like the majority of people here I agree that a skid is when one applies the brakes harshly and they lock up.

A burnout is something quite different, I have no idea who the first idiot was who decided to call a burnout a skid but that fool has much to answer for.

Yes I am old school.

as a young fella growing up in the bush, a skid was locking up the back wheel on the treadly and doing the longest fish tail you could do. A wheelie was doing a wheel stand on the treadly and counting how many peddles you could do. A burntout was spinning the rear wheels creating mass amounts of smoke.

Treadly. You got to love that. Makes you wonder how and where some of these old Aussie sayings got started.
