I need to repair some rust damage in the rear window and am wondering what thickness steel do I need?

And if anyone knows anywhere that is open today(New years eve)?

I usually use 1mm mild steel (zinc coated if you can) and sometimes 1.6mm pending where it is.
1mm will do the job (usual body thickness is 0.8mm) and today your best bet would be bunnings etc.

torana_umunga74 There are no wreckers open today unfortunately.

Thanks ALX76, Bunnings only had 0.4mm guttering or 3mm flat rod :-(

I ended up finding a trailer repare place that was not open but the people inside served me anyway. They gave me a sheet around 400 x 600x 1.5mm for free!! OMG who says the Xmas spirit is dead?

I figure the window surround would take a bit of the cars load so the thicker steel wouldn't hurt.

Just be careful how much heat you put into this section as the thicker steel will require more heat to take.
Try concentrate ur weld on the thicker stuff or you may blow away the thinner body.

To be honest, I expect a bit of that to happen with me welding it lol.
