Captain, thanks for the photo of your dads car, more pics would be great! Are they genuine A9X rims?
Seeing his car reminds me of the licence plate I have put away for mine:

Posted Image

I like your dads better, even though most non torana nuts wouldnt get the meaning. I was pretty rapped to get mine, didnt think that would be available, but i guess its another confirmation of the lack of black slr,s.
And as promised some more pics of speedholes in my car, first the evil one - the boot

Posted Image

its possible its been used as target practice for clay pidgeon shooting
next the cut gaurd with added rust!

Posted Image

one for the gearbox fans, my beloved T10 (no I dont want to swap it for a m21)

Posted Image

Thats it for now for pics. More later but with shiny bits added!!

Like the others said, that isn't bad rust. I'm looking forward to seeing this car come along it's journey.

Nah, the rims are just butchered GTS rims welded into 15 x 10 and 15 x 8 blanks.

He use to run simmons rims on them... the GTS rims look 10x better (in my opinion) and a are a lot easier to clean.

Up close the paint is starting to show it's age... It really needs to go through the same treatment as you are doing.

Oh to have a car straight enough to have black paint, can't wait to follow the progress and see it finished.

Here's a flareless one to whet your appetite :spoton:

Not too sure if I like the silver along the front spoiler, and around to the beaver panel.
Captain, that is a great looking car. Your old man must be proud!

Thanks for the great photos guys. They help remind me what I spending all this effort and money for. Interesting to hear the differnet views on the silver "blackout" areas. Im leaning to a more original look( which i know is strange as I have the added flares) with the silver continuing around the front fenders and over the front spoiler. I dont think I will continue the silver over the flares though, I have seen many with and without, but Im leaning towards just leaving these areas black. Im also in two minds about the paint itself. I already have the paint mix, which is an 2k acrylic and originally these cars didnt use any clear topcoat. Im considering having some clear coats added. This will deepen the paint, add a bit of that bling factor and may help protect from scratches , but it may take away a bit from that original look that im after. Captain is that the original paint on your fathers car? Im interested to hear your opinions on this, especially from anybody that has a black car.

Our last SL/R was black......with a black interior.

Damn that thing got hot!

I had intended to put the silver on it, but it just looked sooooo good in black!

I also stuck with the silver grill.

cheers Col.

Keep the pics coming this looks like a good one to follow. Take it from an old panel beater, the rust in your car is minor compared to some I have repaired over the years.

I think black with chamois interior is a nice combo. Many custom cars go for lighter colour interiors on a black exterior. Looks the goods!
Best of luck with the project.

Not L34 m8.
It was a 2-78 LX SL/R 4.2 4slot.

As far as i know, it was the only black 4dr in town.
I don't know of the history.

Cheers, Col.

Gday all,
Just returned from seeing the panel beater (George )with some progress pics of the body. I was quite pleased with the amount of work done in just one week. Pretty good seeing its just one bloke.
Take note that all of the areas replaced havnt been finished so some are a touch rough, but overall im really happy with the progress!

Posted Image
Posted Image

rr qtrs and taillamps are going excellently, with some finishing to be done inside the hard to get areas of the lampcans. The wheelhouse inners and the outer qtr panels have been welded up and the edges balled over. This is now much neater than the original butcher job. (still some finishing touches to be done) Qtr and Lower back panel were Rare spares parts with only a small piece of the lower panel used. They seem to fit quite well
Posted Image
Posted Image

Hes also blown out the sills, repaired the small holes and is going to pump as much rust preventative down the cavities that he can (por15 i think)

Posted Image
Posted Image
Also note the amount of work done to the RH rear qtr. This area had a big dent and I know George said it was a b@stard to get right.
Posted Image
Posted Image
nicely finished rh lower sill area!
Posted Image
George has also started on the rr windscreen flange. Interesting to note he said the Rare spares replacement part didnt fit very well and he had to cut it up to use any of it. You can also see in this pic the patches in the parcel shelf.
Posted Image
Posted Image

Unfortunately he cant start on the boot floor ,I cant seem to find a decent one so I may be waiting till april. George can still continue with the rest of the car and get it close to paint ready. Im very happy with the progress, looks like hes doing a good job, quickly and i must say , at a fair price ( well i think so anyway compared to some of the other insane prices ive been quoted!) What ive seen so far , i would definitely recommend him to others.
Hope your enjoying the pics - stay tuned.

I'd like to have a dollar for every rear windscreen and parcel shelf I've replaced over the years. Looking good buddy.

Gday all,
Yesterday went up to see the car and to drop off a load of parts that are needed for the next phase of the project. Packed a borrowed territory (really impressed with how much stuff you can fit in this thing!) with 4 doors , a nosecone, a set of very wide rims with tyres, a set of flares, two rear spoilers ,two front spoilers, a cowl panel, mirrors , and a box of bolts and screws. All those hours of playing tetris as a kid really paid off! The body is now straight, with all areas finished ,except for the boot floor ,which i will hopefully get next month. It looks really good and now the details are being done. A new set of flares from wilson fibreglass are being fitted. I have 2 other sets ,one was on the car but have been heavily cut around the front flares and the other was off an slr body I bought years ago and then wrecked. I wanted to start with a fresh pair that i knew would fit well and I believe wilsons flares to be the best fitting. The mags are for test fitting the flares, they are of a similar size/offset to the rims that will eventually go on the car. All the other stuff was needed to be prepared for paint. Here are some before and after photos of areas that were repaired.
Firstly around the base of the A-pillars. The corrosion was quite bad and hes had to replace the whole areas with metal that he formed himself

Around the rear windscreen:

This rear qtr was badly dinged and warped. One of the worst areas on the car:

Lamp cans had some nice speed holes in them. Very fast car indeed:

Front of the car has come up a treat. The engine bay looks like a new car , with the holes behind the hinges and battery tray fixed, and he has done a fantastic job of cutting out the old lower radiator cross and welding the doner panel in:

Yes lots and lots. Should be around 14000 when finished. Thats including paint, graphics, everything. Ten years of savings.
Its a shitload of money but it should be worth it once its done.
