Nice. Nag me about the aerial, it is in the shed somewhere. Not sure of condition. Being a hoarder, I kept it, just a matter of finding it.

Went for a visit to the panel shop today. Good news and maybe bad news. First the good news. All panels have been test fitted (wernt on today though so couldnt get photos :<_<: ) Flares have been fitted, and it would have been nice to see them on, but i trust the bloke and i get to approve of the fit before paying final amount. Hes cut the front gaurds to fit the large test wheels and (as directed) left the front bolt ons pretty well unmolested. Hate it when you see flares with the whole front corner cut away for turning clearance (as mine were!) He was going to fit the front spoiler tucked under the flares, but Ive asked him to have the spoiler overlapping as thats the way ive seen every other torana. Looks neater too. Hes sprayed under the car, under the aprons, inside the rear qtrs, and inside the cabin.

As you can see he has also started to add the seam sealer to any exposed weld flange.
We talked about the boot again and after much more inspection ,has decided that he can repair it without having the replacement floor. Structurally its pretty good but i thought it would be too much to repair but he knows someone who can form local areas of the sheeetmetal to use as patches. i was pretty adamant that the floor looks as "unrepaired" as possible and he assured me that it will look very neat, original and probably better than if he had to cut the whole floor out. So he will be finished with the car in two weeks!!! Now the bad news. The painter that the panel beater normally uses, and that i was going to use, has now come back with a lot higher estimate of painting costs than first spoken about. So george (panel beater) has given me another painter that he highly recommends, and i will speak to both, look at some of their work, and then go from there. As many people know, jobs like this always tend to blow out in budget, but its a bit irrritating when you get a rough estimate and then its suddenly revised to twice as much. Hmmmmmmm :<_<:

Good stuff, My rear quarter was worse than that. But i had F'all rust to deal with. Nice job. Where in Melb are you? Doesn't a forum member sell boot floors?

Keep up the good work!

Darren

Hey Darren,
yeah a forum member does, but they are basic folded sheet, probably not what you would want if you were after an "untouched look" . They are missing certain details, which would be easily picked out. All has turned out well on that front anyway, the panel beater has fixed all the rusted out areas without replaceing the whole boot, just small sections. I havnt seen it finished as yet, but he ensures me it has come out really well. I was pretty adamant that you wouldnt be able to pick the repairs.
Will post some photos when I go to see the car in a week or so.

p.s sent you another pm if you havnt already seen it.

Its been a while since my last update, the car is now ready for paint and sitting in my garage. Unfortunately its a bit of a wet day so the car got a bit wet by the time i got it home, but as soon as it got back we cleaned and dried, inside, outside and underneath. Even got out the hairdryers to make sure no moisture was left in the hard to get places.

Im very happy with the finish, its very smooth and straight, as you can see in the photos.

The boot repair was the last done, and has come up very nice indeed.

Painting starts in a couple of weeks and will be done in my garage, by a friend. Hes a painter by trade, but is currently not working in that particular industry. Regardless he is very good and was responsible for the paint work on many of the past prototype/concept vehicles shown by one of the big local manufacturers, at the motor shows. More pics to come.

the painter you have sounds like a good guy if your happy with him, however its all ways nice to "bake" paint on.
he (your painter) will know this,
I was goning to paint my car in my shed until a mate of a mate had a BBQ and i met a lad who owns and runs his own panel shop,
long story short, he dosent like doing "full resprays" like most panel shops, but if you bring it ready too paint its OK.
and ther is no bugs/dust in booth to worry about,(yeah youl get an OK job in the backyard) but its way better in a booth.
food for thought
Cheers BAZ 355

Baz ,
i mostly agree with what your saying. He was a last resort. Not that i think he would do the worst job, i know hes good and i trust him, but it was more for a couple of the reasons you mentioned. Of course I would like the car to be sprayed in a dust free environment with an ideal temperature, but basically i got jack of painters giving me open ended quotes with no gaurantees of where it would end. Practically had to beg a few of them to even come out and see the car to quote. First it was that they didnt want to do acrylic, too much polishing and too much work.Ok. So i began to be flexible with the paint and would have accepted 2 pak. Oh yeah that would be better, but any cheaper.nup. How much?? well you know... its alot of work...polishing...blah blah. Enough. I know what im getting and if we are careful with sealing the garage , and of what day we do it (temp wise) we should be right. Most of all i trust this guy, and i know for a fact he will do everything possible to make sure its a top notch job. Plus im paying him so its not a favour, its a job for him. I honestly wish i knew a paint shop that wouldnt rip me off, but it was getting just too hard. You would think with the economic climate shops would jump at the chance.

I painted my first car in a my parents driveway with no problems and I had no idea what I was doing at the time being my first effort. It still came out really good. I'm sure you'll end up with a good job seeing this bloke knows what he's doing and that he's a mate. I'm sure he'll go out of his way to do his best by his mate.

By the way guys no it's not me painting the car,( thought i'd better get in before someone asks).

Well we have started the painting today. Took yesterday off to finish the body prep and to do the final clean of the garage. There was a lot of bare metal edges around the body that had started to show a bit of light rust, so i spent the day sanding, prepsoling and spraying a light blast of primer on these areas to seal them ready for paint. I also re-applied seam sealer to all the areas that i wasnt quite happy with or that had been missed. I wasnt happy with areas in the boot or within the interior floor so I hit the whole rear floor and areas of the boot with por15. The rear parcel shelf was also given a good going over with por15 and the missus and me spent a couple of hours coating the rear windscreen flange ,poking the stuff into the flanges with tiny brushes.
Heres the engine bay before paint (please note all the bloody grey areas i had to hit again)

We then resanded the whole engine bay before paint then again after the first black coats. Here it is after adding colour and clear coats

very happy !!! I know im picky but black shows every little imperfection, regardless it looks great.
Here is the dash panel done in satin black. come up a treat.
Posted Image
I decided to do the inside of the boot again in satin black. I had to etch prime the por15 areas before painting to allow proper paint adhesion. $44 for a aerosol can that etches por15!!!!bloody thievery.
Posted Image
We also managed to get the inside of the decklid and the hood done. They also needed a good checking over a re-sanding/primer before painting. Unfortunately the hood still had crap caught within the inner (even after giving it a good blow out) and blew out over the new paint so we have to sand that back down again. My mate cant come back next weekend to spray so ill use that weekend to prepare other panels and possibly re-sand the inner again.

Hope there are still people interested , i must admit there was some twitching in the old durps today :spoton:
Very tired , but happy ,beer now.

Thanks Anthony, at the moment im useing your engine bay as a benchmanrk,i was very impressed, if i can get it close to yours i will be very happy indeed! Black is a bitch though , it shows up every little flaw. In one view you can look at a black engine bay and it will look famtastic, yet you will notice every little piece of dirt that has ingrained itself. I guess the thing i have to look forward to is that the exterior will be polished and buffed so that any flaw will be cut back after the final polish. I can live with the very small flaws that ive spotted in the engine bay, and as ive said ,im being a picky b@stard. After numerous beers , im still pumped about seeing the progress ive seen today. Ill will sleep soundly tonight (with a very sore lower back from sanding) to the words of my mate ringing in my ears , the exterior will come out ten times as good as the engine bay, after polishing. I cant wait.

Thanks mello, i believe the images dont quite do it justice. Its an absolute credit to my mate how good its come out. Every flaw he spotted in the paint (the few that there were) he insisted on making right. Couldnt ask for better.

Thanks Darren, ill convey the message to the painter, im only the grunt man! Thanks back too, following your build thread has helped me heaps in tips on what to do with my build. People like yourself help make this site into the great institution that it is today! ( even if it means you get first dibs on a manifold that certain others may desperately want :D )
