Hang on....dont flame me yet!
I like to know exactly what i am looking at!
If the tags say it is a SL/R, then i look at the car as a SL/R!
If the tags say it's a sunbudgie, & it has a 308 with SL/R5000 plastered down the sides......then i can admire the car as a replica!
The thing that annoys me is when the owner tries to convince me it is a 'factory 1 off bathurst car'.
Sheesh!
I also hate my SL/R being refered to as a sunbird! Hey.....who doesn't?
But it is usually by ppl walking.....& i know that their 'fraud' is in the shop! .....LOL
Cheers, Col.

Hence removed what I said which was nothing bad anyway
But I do find the discrimination comes from some of the Torana owners that do read the tags, the general public don't know shit from shinola let alone the details of a tag....

pardon my ignorance, but what is the diifferance between a sunbird and a Torana ( and yes i know a sunbird is a torana) apart from a 4cyl motor with a gearbox and diff to suit.
Mort
Sunbirds have the "Sunbird" stigma.

A torana is a torana, as long as you're not going around saying 'check out my original SLR5000!' then what need do they have to look at the tags?
anyway, still got those ROH's? Very nice wheels and I'd like a piece of them.

Sunbird owners dont go looking for a SL/R front end to replace their worn out/ sagged one!
LOL

Mort, the only differences I know (apart from the driveline) are the badges and grill.

This discussion makes me instantly think of the words "just a 308"or "just a 6"
At the end of the day you have a nice looking ride that your happy with I think sometimes people are just throwing a line out fishing for a bite with these half baked comments before they go back to the carpark and get in their VT Commodore

If they have to look at tags to get there "opinion" on a car then i would not worry about there comments at all. Still says Torana on the Compliance Plate.
I agree with most all comments here - better off modifying something with little integral worth (eg a Sunbird body and tags) rather than modifying something that you could sell for good dollars in pieces (a 4.2 SLR in pieces). The 4cyl car would probably have a better body and an easier life as well.
But, a Sunbird isn't called or plated a Torana (although it just about is parts wise) especially in LX. Holden started the T,U,V and W series cars in 1975 model year.
The T series started with the TA then went into the Gemini series TC, TD, TE etc.
The U series is the 4cyl LH Torana, early 4cyl LX and then changed name to the Sunbird. The UC Torana is an odd one out probably orphaned by the V series jumping into Commodore and hence it got the same code as the Sunbird. Hence 8UG69. But it could also just have been Holden's strategy when they aligned the series code with the body model code?
The V series is the 6cyl and V8 LH and LX and then leaps into VB, VC through to VE today. Hence 8VD69 etc
W series started in HJ, through to WB and the again later in the later generation Statesmans. Hence 8WN69 etc.
It was also at UC/VB/WB that Holden changed from a series code eg HQ, LX etc to using the body model code in the series code eg UC, VB, VL etc.
What I'm getting at is a Sunbird is a totally different body model code to Torana in LX (ie U vs V) and it isn't plated or badged Torana anywhere. This is different in the LH and early LX where the 4cyl variant is called Torana (as is the TA). In a UC the Sunbird and Torana are the same body model code but just a different luxury level (UG vs UH). So I suppose by people saying it's "just a Sunbird" they are technically correct - it's not a Torana, and in "pure logic world" a Sunbird couldn't be part of say Toranafest, and the event would then have to be called "Torana and Sunbird Fest"!!!. But once it's got a V8 and better driveline who really cares? Until you lift the bonnet it looks like any other Torana.

Anyone got an LX Sunbird? Do they say Torana on the ADR plate? I thought they didn't because Holden certainly made them a different model on the other plates. Happy to be proven wrong on that point though.

Not my fault she came out of factory with a 4 pot but its was rectified 8 years ago and given 4 more cylinders.
Boris aint a bad looking sunbird and i dont care. its a hatch!
What shits me is ppl who say ive give the impression she is a "ss". the people ive known here for umteenth years know i have never said that and if she was a "ss" i would at least have it stickered that way!
EDIT: Mine says "Holden Coupe"

I think its better to butcher a sunbird than a SLR or A9X i cut the inner guards on my old tory to fit extractors up over the rails.
I would have been murdered for doing that to a SLR

Grab an SLR 5000 and an original Sunbrid. Swap everything over.
I can guarentee no one in the country would have a Sunbird optioned genuine SLR 5000.
The looks at Torana Fest would be priceless.
