Hello all,
Im trying to locate a correct inlet manifold to suit my 1976 LX SLR5000. I realize this may be difficult but Ive got to try anyway. Can anybody help me with information on what i should be looking for (casting numbers , what shape are the inlet ports etc.?) ? The vehicle is a manual and runs a 4 barrel quadrajet, (which I believe is the original carby) and currently has an edelbrock performer manifold. Also what distinguishes the air cleaner from the later models? I have one (bought from evilbay) but im not sure its correct for the pollution set up.
Thanks all.

That depends upon the car. Is it early 1976 (pre ADR27A) or late? The valley cover will be one of two types: water heated or exhaust heated, depending upon the month of build in 1976. Of these there are two types of each:

Early (water heated): HT/HG and HQ/HJ (LH and early LX are the same as HQ/HJ) (plus the modified HQ one for LH L34 engine);

Late (exhaust heated): HX/early HZ and late HZ/VB. Late LX is the same as HX/early HZ with the barrels down each head face (as opposed to flat in this area).

Thanks for the answer yel327
I believe the car to be late 1976 as it has standard pollution gear (i.e cannister etc) I take it that particular ADR is in relation to the addition of the pollution gear? So if its a late 76 car it will have an exhaust heated manifold. Are there any particular numbers relating to this, or can somebody supply a photo of one so I can identify the difference visually.

If it has ADR 27A on the tag, it is the late type. I'll get a pic.

Red, just checked my tags, it only lists ADR27, NOT ADR27A .I take it that these would be different design rules? Now im confused what i should be looking for......

look for a part number at the rear of the manifold, you want 9929854

here are a couple of pics I hope help. The first few are an ADR 27A manifold, the second batch are the non ADR27A manifold, which is the type you want. Sorry the second batch of pics are not great, but you should be able to note on the ADR27A manifold the provision for the pipes from the manifold to the auto choke on the carby, the large lump on the front drivers side, and the long sausage like pieces down each side. You'll see on the early type manifold a flat plate at the front drivers side near the carby with 2 bolts, and on the passenger side a fitting with a rubber plug because is'a a water heated manifold.

Thanks red, most of the manifolds i have seen have 2 or three numbers, are the ones youve described the larger numbers near the carby ports? Also does this mean my car does meet ADR27A? If anybody has a photo of the relevant type of manifold, please post.

the number should be at the rear near the vacumn fitting.

If the ADR plate says ADR27 then you need the water heated type as Red shows in the pictures. There is still a canister on the earlier cars, just a different type.

Your car sounds like it's an early (non-ADR27A) LX.

The change-point is 1/7/76. So if the compliance plate has ADR27 on it, it should be dated 6-76 or earlier. If the plate has ADR27A on it, it should be dated 7-76 or later. The early LX 5.0-litre V8s are same as LH & HJ. The later LX 5.0-litre V8s are the same as HX. The early type canister is the same from 1-75 to 6-76. As yel327 has mentioned, the canister was altered slightly at the time of the ADR27A engine changes.

There is a bit to go, yeah, it's hard doing everything on your own in your own time though

Thanks everyone for the good info, and especially to red for the photos. They will greatly help me to identify the correct manifold. Those two features that youve pointed out (the diamond cover plate and the blocked off water outlet) are quite easily identifiable, but ill make sure i also check for the correct casting numbers.
regards to all.
Drfegg

p.s if anyone happens to see one around, hear of one ,please let me know. Ta.

Gday again all,
Id like to clarify a couple of points in my search for a manifold with the part number 9929854 (not found one anywhere!) IS the inlet manifold with the part number 9929853 the same?( I have found plenty of these) If not what differences are there? I believe i need the same manifold off an LH L31 (as mine is an early LX , non ADR27A) but one of the members here has told me his LH L31 ,74 had a 9929853 part on his car. He also had heard that its not uncommon for the last digit of the casting numbers to be different. Could this be correct? Can i just use a 9929853 manifold? Any help would be greatly appreciated as ive only got the photos that red posted on this thread , to go by.

I am quiet sure the manifold with part number 9929853 is the incorrect manifold for your car the manifold you are chasing would look similar but would have the plate with holes in for the auto choke function for the carby.

I don't question the part number 9929854 you have been quoted by Red and others is being correct . However, I think the difficulty in identifying a manifold may lie in the difference between the catalogue part number and the actual casting number carried on the manifold. These two numbers may well not be the same. As you know my engine has a manifold with casting number 9929853 and l have been told that casting and part numbers can vary in the last digit. The "853" manifold has provision for auto choke.

Does anyone have a manifold with 9929854 cast on it??

The following is a quote out of this thread which further illustrates differences between part and casting numbers.

http://www.gmh-toran...php?showforum=6

I think you will find that those numbers are 'casting numbers' as none of the numbers appear in the Parts Catalogue. The bearing cap numbers are the same as on my NP motor. The bearing caps were common to all 202 engines.

The piston number is again a casting number but it differs to any in the thread below:

I dont have a 9929854 but I have 9932890 which I have no idea what its from, possibly HX as this number doesnt appear in the LX or HZ parts manual.

That manifold in thephotos is the first of the ADR27A manifolds. Found on HX, early HZ and ADR27A LX.

The casting numbes on GM alloy parts are often one digit different to the part number.

So would i be safe in saying that there is a possibility that the 9929853 manifold could be the correct one for my car? (sorry if i mis-quoted you SLR!) Im trying to get more pictures of an 854, so there is a possibility i will be able to tell.

What part number should a correct inlet manifold for an L34 have on it to identify it ? ( sorry to hijack your thread ) . :)

AFAIK L34 manifolds are the same as HQ just machined. I think they have the casting number ground off too. Number on alloy parts is a casting number, just like cast iron bits. Not a part number.

Dr Fegg, all pre ADR27A manifolds are basically the same except for the heater hose threaded hole to the LH side of the thermostat on HT-HG examples. The photo you posted up earlier is a HQ style manifold by the look of it which is what a pre ADR27A Torana would have fitted.
