Listen to ls2lxhatch mate, he is wise on this subject, im doing the same with a L76 and there is a lot more required than just the crate motor and computer. I spent 14k on the engine, cpu, loom 4 speed 4l65e and some minor internals on motor, i still need sensors and starter etc.
If your dead keen, buy a rear ended VZ HZV. wish i did

You read all the pro's and cons, but the bottom line is performance costs. The difference I find is the late model motors are very streetable for the dollars spent. Any 308/355 thats making good horse power (400rwh) is almost a pig to drive on the road, loud and a cop magnet and not cheap.

I argue with my mates about there lS2's being cheap for the horsepower they deliver. They keep telling me how much money they have spent, and expensive it is. But even when you build old school high horse power engines, unless you have most of the gear its much the same costs. You still need ignitions, carbs, manifolds, pulleys, alternators for the bigger electrical systems ect. Stronger drivelines for all the extra horsepower, but I have been in very few cars that can be driven every day or taken on cruises without a problem or attracting a cop. This is where the late model motors shine, they run 12's easy with little mods, put a cam and springs to get your 400 horses at the wheels and get great fuel consumption, reliable and reasonably quiet.

I have spent 10's of thousands on big blocks to get what a new 6.2ltr motor does easy with a cam change and tune. And LS1LX sorry, I meant your car, not GPack. Any way thats my rant, some like Struggler can make 600 horses for $20 with second hand parts but that's the minority.

I'd still swap my LS2 for that big block in your hatch any day of the week.

LSx's arent different anymore, there in every 2nd early commodore, every issue of street machine has 1 in it.

It's definately a hell of a lot of work, and it's not cheap, Listen to the people who are in the know and have done it (LS2LXhatch and LS1LX) as they have gave me a lot of help and advice. There's a lot to consider with this conversion, and it does get expensive, all I can say is make sure you do all your research and ring around, prices, engineering, legality, before you make any decisions.

If you have the time, money and knowledge to do the conversion, it will definately make for a nice reliable, tough car, and with a few tweaks you can get the LSx motors sounding very nice, even a big lumpy idle, So dont worry bomber my torana won't sound like a standard ss commodore with a quiet and smooth idle, lol.

Cheers

Les

My car always has been and always will be a daily driver, this is the reason I decided to run an LS2.

If you a building a weekend/strip car then fuel economy and drivablity are not as important. If I was building a weekend car then I too would swap the LS2 for a 427 any day of the week. Unfortunately the 427 is not legal in WA.

Its not legal in Canberra any more either, if I mod mine I have to re-engineer it, then it becomes illegal! I am putting fuel injection, computer and 6 speed in it at the moment and working with rego so I don't break the rules and make it illegal. If that happens I will be going LS3!

by how i understood my enginereer who doing my ls1 lc. If you bought a new crate engine ls2 you still have to comply with today laws like or not. The only way around the problem is, don't engineer it. It dose matter if was a 34 ford, you still to comply with todays laws and not 1970 when my lc was built

For all the good points of the LS3, would be great to see you retain the big block - it's a sensational car

hi guys,

Im new to this forum and sorry to dig up old thread. ive owned a couple VE SS with the last car running 11.8 full street trim down the 1/4 and just bought an E2 clubsport. ive just acquired an old rough LX 4dr car to transform into a street/strip car. Not concerned with street reg/compliance for now. i will transplant a 427ci LS7 block wet sump engine with race single plane and 950 carb. what i need to know is there a GOOD set of engine mounts and 1 7/8 headers that WILL DIRECTLY BOLT IN. I ALSO REQUIRE A MOUNT FOR A POWER GLIDE TRANS. what sump will i need?
what radiators will fit? i was thinking a late model VE radiator and fan set up will slot in with minor modification.

feel free to reply here or send emails to [email protected]
