I have spent a bit of time lately tidying up the interior. New door trims (easy to clean buckskin vinyl), handles, window winders, pinchweld and kick panels. I had to take it all out last week to weld a bracket on the floor.

First another disclaimer....... modifications shown here are for use in a vehicle that will never see use on public roads. I can't recommend
you try this at home on your road registered vehicle.

The Andra tech inspection highlighted the fact I only had front brakes. I had always intended to fit the rears one day, just never got around to it. The car pulled up fine at WSID from 133 MPH so I wasn't too concerned. My front brakes are operated by a short stroke, low volume, single circuit master cylinder. It doesn't have the fluid displacement required to activate rear brakes. I wasn't really keen on swapping master cylinders to a dual circuit unit so decided to operate the rears independantly. I built a hand operated brake lever (basically a hydraulic handbrake) using an identical master cylinder as the front. I found an old Commodore handbrake lever and modified it to activate a pushrod and built the rest to suit from scrap steel. I haven't tested it yet (no rear calipers) but moving the lever through 60 degrees will move the piston through its full stroke. It should work fine. Now if one system fails I still have a back-up to pull me up.

Here are a couple of pics......

Nice rear brake setup, when I read that you pull up a 10sec car on front brakes only I thought to myself Ive done some pretty sketchy shit but frOck that lol
Why don't you fit a tandem master with a line locker, that way you got piece of mind, and the best of both worlds,

By the way that interior gives the car a real innocent granny look, I love it

Cheers

I will probably get around to fitting a dual circuit setup in the future but if I do it will need to be under the dash so I will have to do some serious planning before then.

Thanks.

Rear brakes are all in and operational.

Spent a couple of days at the painters last week cutting out some fluff and stuff from the paint and buffing some other bits. Had to do a couple of touchups as well where I dropped stuff onto the fresh paint. It really looks great now, far better than I ever envisaged.

Still need to get myself a race suit and some roll cage padding but as soon as that is done I'm back to the track !

In the last month I got myself a race suit and various other odds and ends required to run in the 10's.

Today I got it up to WSID to have a few runs at the test n tune.

Ran a base line pass first up.... 10.07.

Adjusted the 1-2 shift light up to 7K, gained 3 hundreths.

Changed rear springs to softer, taller units, lost 6 hundreths (all in the 60', pity, as it drove a lot nicer).

Tried to give it more timing, slowed down another 4 hundreths but didn't lose any MPH !

Put the old springs back in, wound the timing back to 34 degrees and took off the exhaust resonators.... 9.991 !

Did another pass to back it up, 10.005.

Put it back on the trailer and came home a happy man !

I have a small hesitation on the line that needs investigation that may net a few hundreths. Will whip the carby off and have a look in the next week or 2 to see what thats about.

Hope to have some pics and possibly a video in the next couple of days.

Thanks ! The Kingswood has some huge blown or turbo engine in it, ran 8.8 at 151mph on that pass ! Was quite tidy too but very much a light weight.

Well done, looks good off the line. Looks like it must be easy to drive, your able to check a few emails, check out the http://www.gmh-torana.com.au site while your driving. :spoton:

Thanks mate ! The car does drive very nicely, smooth off the line and as straight as down the track.
Once I have done the burnout I hit the START icon on the laptop to log the pass. No time for emails ! Officials were quite impressed with the laptop stand and security.

I have been set straight on the Kingswood.

It is not a big engine, or a blown one !

It has a 412 CI SBC with SB2.2 heads. The engine was built here in the ACT and was actually in a mates VL Calais (the Beauchamp VL) running 8.7 odd ets and it weighed less than 3000lb.

It is obviously well set up and to run those numbers is a real achievement !

Time flies when your having fun ! Its been almost 5 months since the last update and a heap has happened.

Unfortunately during this time I had a bit of a health scare and had to back off on a few things. Fortunately I'm back together now and getting back to speed.

I have also been busy with customer engines and have a couple of builds and dyno results I might share in another thread. I have found some time though to get back to the track recently.

I did quite a bit of work on the carby, my 830 annular discharge, that has served me well to date. The car had a lean spot just off launch that I couldn't tune around. I tried bigger jets, pump shooters etc, even an 850 base but nothing could get rid of the flat spot that would see the car leave the line, dip down momentarily, then accelerate away. The car also seemed to be slowing slightly, a couple of MPH and about a tenth initially. In desperation I decided to give it a few runs on alcohol and see how that would go. I ran a couple of BP98 fuelled passes in the low tens then drained the tank, added 20L of Methanol and swapped the carb to my 950 Alky Holley. Well that woke it up ! No flat spot off the line and felt heaps faster. Fastest times to half track yet by a tenth and a couple of MPH but slowed in the top end to run 9.928 at 133. I ran it again to check......9.928 at 133 ! Talk about the consistancy of running on alcohol !

Posted Image

Next meeting I stuck with the petrol and the car was now running 10.2's at 129 so I knew I had a problem. All the loss was from the 330' on so I started looking at fuel pressure. Seems there was a problem there somewhere so I pulled the tank and lines out expecting a blockage but it was all pretty good. Fuel pressure at idle now was erratic and I decided to pull the pump off. Unfortunately it appears the fuel pump pushrod and roller cam have had an altercation and the pushrod is mushroomed over. I tried getting it out of the block with vice grips and a slide hammer but to no avail. Looks like the engine will be coming out for some repairs and a cleanout. I have dropped the oil and cut the filter open and aside from a whole lot of bronze from the pushrod tip it looks pretty clear. Hopefully I didn't wear it down to the hardened steel as that stuff will mess bearings and cranks up badly.

As for the carb flat spot, after consulting with a few experts it appears I may have outgrown this carb. The size of the engine isn't compatible with the small venturi annular discharge booster and it looks like I need to revert back to the traditional down leg style in order to overcome the issue. I should be able to borrow an 850 and if this does indeed fix the problem I'll get the boosters swapped over in my carby.

As luck would have it I have been assembling a low-buck 350 to have some fun with at Summernats so I have another engine almost ready to go in. Its no real grunter but should push the car into the 11's. More details on that one later.

I also found time about a month ago to allow Paul Beck from Performance Street Car magazine to take a few pics of the car and run a feature in his magazine. The magazine should be in newsagents later this week so keep an eye out (it has a pic of Gary Myers new Mustang on the cover) . Here is a pic or 2 I took at the photo shoot......

Attached File  P1020666.JPG   107.99K   5 downloads

Attached File  P1020668.JPG   75.21K   4 downloads

The pics were taken right on twilight and used a long exposure to get good colour saturation so I'm hoping they should come out well.

I'll post some more details of the other engine later this week, stay tuned !
