Well my cars paint has only just dried and Alistair has shoved it to one side of the Garage and moved the Red SLR in!

I rekon I'm getting the raw end of the deal though, he will own it and i get to pay for it. He helped me for the last year on mine so
i guess i owe him. but if he ever sells it i want half.

It is a bit rough around the edges but all seems to be original, including the engine, 4 speed and diff, Interior is brown( He wants Black!)

We allready have some doors, will have to replace the rear beaver panel, Boot looks good, floor pans look good, few sus spots, guess we will see what we are in for over the next couple of weeks.

Day 1. Kick Dad's car out of the way.

Posted Image

Gona strip it with paint stripper, it only seems to have original paint on it, shouldn't be to bad.

Gona try and make it Factory Stock.

I want to see how much rust is in the rear of the car so stripped the quarter panel, no bad, a old repair above the wheel arch, the bog was about 1-2mm thick, about 15cm round. the bottom of the panel has about 4 rust holes about 5mm round, i will bead blast the outside and inside and weld them up.

Posted Image

The beaver panel is in pretty bad condition,we will have to replace it, are rare spares ones any good? I thought i read somewhere that they are only curved one way and not such a good fit? Check out the way the factory one is finished off. Nice.

Bit of patching in the tail lights, not to bad.

Excellent project for you to share. Get the young bloke going and you may be surprised just what determined and enthusiastic hands can achieve. In my experience may not take long before the skills of the student start to rival those of the teacher! :spoton:

good stuff mate....here is a bit of inspiration...here is what mine looked like in 1981...same as your car but a 253...

Posted Image

Posted Image

If you look closely...on the left of the rear number plate is the letters "L H" . they were put on by the previous owner...letters from the word Holden of course. The 4.2 badges and Holden letters have been removed from front of car.

No I fitted it, all the rage in the 80's.
another thing to note...it has Ford exterior mirrors as well, once again previous owner fitted them. My current Race car has the same mirrors...go figure...its also Manderin Red...

Here is a photo bucket link to my LH SLR...

Dealer fitted, not factory.

Looks great, and I love the oldschool example. Those pipes are classic!

Well this is what we have been doing all weekend,

Cut the rear beaver panel off.
Posted Image

Fixed all the holes inside and treated it all, Cut new one test fit.
Posted Image

Bit of massaging with knocking stick and welded it on.
Posted Image

Tried to make the joints the same as what was on the car, took me F&c*kin ages.
Posted ImagePosted Image
Posted ImagePosted Image

Then left hand tail light

Posted ImagePosted Image
Then right hand tail light

Posted ImagePosted Image
Bit of plastic in a can should be great.

Next is the rear quarter bottom on the left the right has no holes at all.

Start at the back and go forward. Coming along nicely. Not as bad as i thought.
