I'd say you'd need a box with overdrive?

There is no overdrive, it's a 3 speed TH400; 3.08:1 diff gears; 15"inch rims with 235's with 60profile (Total rolling diameter of about 66.3cm)

Looks like some faulty guages there to me

The cluster guages are not faulty, the speedo is reasonably accurate and has been tested using those speed feedback things on the Hume.
The Taco in the cluster however is a percentage out compared to the readings I get now from a digital Taco & Shift Light I've recently installed, but I'm not sure which one is correct (I'm inclined to trust the digital one but maybe the digital one could be set up wrong or something). the digital one would have read something over 5000RPM. (It reads up to 3000RPM when the cluster one reads 2500RPM)

The car goes well beyond 200 (maybe 230 or 240 or more before it gets scary and you have to back off), but the needle doesn't go beyond where you see it in the photo, it just stops there, it will not point vertically down or continue to turn. When it reaches this point the car will continue to accelerate for quite some time.
The only way I'll be able to answer this question is to use a G-TECH or something.

you were pushing over 200 on a cold engine, or the guage is broken.

The temp guage in the cluster is not conncted. I use the mechanical one on the LHS, attached to the steering collumn. This temp guage was on something under 180degrees Farenheight, Maybe 150.

driving at that speed one hand on the wheel and both eyes on the camera

I was not looking a the camera when I took the shot, just pointed it in the direction of the dash and pushed the button. I also backed off just as I took the shot.

someone had the rear's up on blocks?

I would never do that. That would be almost like free-revving the f*ck out of your car.
Is it so hard to beleive that a V8 Torry can go off the clock? I thought that was normal.

For all the nannies out there: It was not a public road;

The fastest i have been is 110MPH in the LJ, Stock 173 with extractors and 2 1/4" exhaust, with M20 and.... 2.78 :tease:

It was sitting on around 4200 RPM, so i reckon maybe 115MPH but it was really floaty at 110MPH. It was fine at 100MPH.

Torana Amore, I wasn't doubting you had the car off the clock, just wondered how the tacho read so low. I had 4 speed with 2.78 diff and 265/50x14s so the gearing was probably similar to yours (you had bigger tyres, I had taller diff gears) and mine ran about 40 kms per 1000 so 200 = 5000.
I was interested in your setup. Not doubting it. I've been there many times.

whats the top speed you have been in ur torrie?

I remember my mates 253 SLR, doing something like 180 or 190kph in the state that it was in back then. (I wasn't driving)
This is the same 253 SLR that Tiny bought later on.

I still managed to drag it off with my 253 SL though, heh heh heh, sorry Tiny, I guess a SBC would fix that eh ;)
At one stage I totally blew it away with my 253 SL, but it was a different guy driving that day and he's a WRX driver, LOL.

Just curious but does anyone know what a celica 5speed (0.85 5th) and a 3.08 banjo with sprintmasters would be geared to?

With a 5000 rpm limit ofcourse and dreaming that the car could get this fast.

Any estimates?

To add to the topic:

My 308 Lj with a trimatic/3.08 could do 190 k's before valve bouncing, still pulling hard, just needs some higher gearing.

Asssuming you have 205/65R13's on it, it should in theory wind out to 214 KPH in 5th @5000 RPM.

Popped a right hand rear tyre at 190kph on West Coast Hway (Perth) and the car slid sideways down the road for 50m and into the bush for 50m. Lucky to be here, but now never speed like that with out high quality rated tyres. When you start getting older you start realizing your not immortal and dont take as many risks as you use to when you were young.

I tend not to look at the spedo when doing excesive speds. I like to keep my eyes on the road as the LJ front end likes to float around at sped.

I find it rather amusing that people openly admit to excessively speeding on public roads on a public forum.

And people wonder why the police pick on them. Sort of makes the other thread about the cop harassment at events a bit of a joke.

I'm rich, devilishly handsome, have fourteen wives, own my own private yacht, island.
oh and im the president of the united states of america, I'm also from the moon.

I declare the above statement to be true.

Anybody here could be lying about speeding.
You claim what you want on the net without evidence or proof, jsut as I can claim the above.
Police can't do anything with such unreliable information, nor do I think police really go scrounging on websites to find cars to pick on.
I mean seriously, do you think police outside of working on the job have nothing better to do at home but make lists of cars to pick on?
On the job, I'd be surprised if anybody gave a shit to make such a list, or had the time to search forums and match up names to cars to locations to rego numbers etc. to pick on them.

Targetted cars will be on lists from attending such places previously, or being busted for hooning, or simply because they look illegally modified/an easy target!

What makes you think they do it from home?

Did you know we have members of the police force on here? :o

Oh and a few years ago a Gold Coast/Brisbane forum bragged about their late night spirited runs and get togethers. They then sooked because they had the police turn up at alot of their *cough* events *cough*, gee I wonder why

I have a few newspaper cutouts where the police have named a few of the forums they watched at the time.

Remember the Today Tonight "Gold Coast Hoons" that gets dragged up each time TT have something on "hoons" you could read about who was driving or riding what on 2 different forums where, again people bragged about being on TV or in the newspapers.

Only if the ones that admitted to speeding on public roads have contributed to that thread, but they haven't. And yet still, I wouldn't consider the topic in the other thread a joke.

If anyone's assuming I'm being hypocritical, well the examples I gave were both on a RACE TRACK, and I clearly said that it was not a public road.

And to add to what Loki said; the cop that I used to live with spent her time on the net after work, on www.rsvp.com.au and that's all, for short period of time. And he's right, most coppers live active lives and don't sit in front of computers all the time in their spare time, (but of-course this is generally speaking, it doesn't mean that SOME do, and I'm sure they use the net as a resource of information but during working hours). Also, people type up bullshit all the time on forums. I could post up a scan of a timeslip and get onto choppers 'Hall of Fame' with a 10sec pass, that doesnt mean it was my car.

Not that I don't get your point tinkers, I did, aside from cops, it affects that attitude and opinion of certian wankers in the community and they develop their stereotypes (which only worsens the cause). I didn't think that we had any that view this forum until recently.

Did you know we have members of the police force on here?  :o

Unless they're in the division specifically assigned to finding such data, don't see why they'd create more work for themselves and care.

Again, I can claim to be a dealer and I'm selling it out of my car, my rego is XXXX , if you see me on the road beep the horn three times and I'll sell you some White Horse!
They can pull me over and search me but otherwise who cares?

The people complaining about cops at 'meet's are either doing something illegal, or have an illegally modified car.

Although I do agree police should just leave people who aren't causing trouble alone at some meets (I'd rather them taking up a hobby in cars and sitting around an empty carparking lot in the middle of nowhere than doing graffiti, robbing old ladies or some other destructive past-time).. provided the people aren't doing anything immediately wrong, a bit of live and let live/give and take is needed in this world for people to get along.

Booking people for being 99mm clearance instead of the legal 100mm is pedantic (sure the line has to be drawn somewhere - but as I said. If they're not doing anything wrong, live and let live.. If they do something wrong, go to town on their ass).

[edit] (after tinks nice edit post :P )

In saying this, I've never had any problems with the police and never been defected.
And yeah, I can see your point tinks - but I just don't think they make such a comprehensive list of individual cars like that.
Pickup on illegal meets where they know stupid shit (burnouts/drags etc.) are occuring - sure! Go there, catch them and go to town on their ass.

I think tinkers motive here is no make us understand that the forum is a PUBLICALLY viewed forum and besides the fact that it can be viewed by the police, it projects itself out to the wider community an image of itself and that image is made up of the forums content and she doesn't want it filled with illegal street racing and burnouts for the impressionable kiddies to see, otherwise we'll be seen as irresponsible twits instead of genuine car enthusiasts. And it will create a bad image for Torana's and their drivers. Notice how Hot-Rods don't get so much flack? (Yet they roam around with supercharges and sidepipes and shit)

Not that this thread is bad, but watch what you say eh guys ;)
