Article title: Identifying Your Lh/x
Article description: Understanding the your LH/X by the numbers
Category: General LH-LX-UC
Date added: Jul 29 2008, 10:52 PM
Article starter: enderwigginau

The ID plates, Chassis and Eng numbers can tell us important things about our vehicles, and even confirm the originality or authenticity of our machines.

Looking from the front of the car, the plate on the firewall are, from left-to-right:

Safety Compliance Plate (ADR plate) on the left,
VIN Plate in the centre, and the
Body Identification Plate on the right.

Safety Compliance Plate
(Location: Drivers Side Firewall)
The ADR plate includes manufacture dates, model name
and style (eg. LX Torana Coupe) and serial number.

Example -

THIS VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED BY
	  GENERAL MOTORS-HOLDEN'S PTY LTD
TO COMPLY WITH AUSTRALIAN DESIGN RULES-NOS.

	   1,2,3,4C,5B,6,7,8,10B,11,12,14,15
	   16,18,20,21,22A,23,24,25,27,28
					HOLDEN
				LX TORANA COUPE
9-75							  ALX000011A
GVW			LBS		   SEATING CAP. 5
THIS PLATE IS AFFIXED WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE
AUSTRALIAN MOTOR VEHICLE CERTIFICATION BOARD.

ADR's - JULY 76 on will have 27A.
Make - HOLDEN
Model, Name and Style - LX, TORANA, COUPE
Month and Year of Manufacture
Vehicle Serial Number
Seating Capacity

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
The VIN Plate Includes alot of info about the vehicle.
It is a 14 character code.
Example:
8D77TFJ496723X

8 - GMH, all Holdens start with 8
D - Series/Degree of Luxury. B = 'S', C = 'SL', D = 'SL/R' or 'SS',
G = 4cyl 'S', H = 4cyl 'SL'
77 - body style, 69 = sedan, 77 = coupe/hatch
T - engine code, T - 308, R - 253, L/M - 202, D/E - 173, Y - 1900cc
F - Year, E-75, F-76, G-77, H-78, changes 1st Sept. for year 1Sept. to 31Aug.
J4 - Assembly Plant and Production Line, H1-4 = Bris, H5-9 = Syd,
J = Dandenong, L = Adel
96723 - Sequential Production Serial - assigned to all vehicles regardless of type, so this was the 96723rd vehicle produced at this plant.
X - Model Code designation for each model programme, eg. LH - H, LX - X

Body Identification Plate
The Body Identification Plate is stamped with a bit of info.
From Top to Bottom,
MODEL: - for example LX8VD77: LX = Model Series, 8 = Manufacturer as above, V = 6&V8 (U = 4cylinder), D = degree of luxury as above, 77 = body shape as above.
LX69STYLE is a replacement shell.

BODY No.: - eg. 496723M which corresponds to the VIN, M indicating Melb Plant. NASCO here is for a replacement shell.

TRIM: eg 1916-18X, Slate Black vinyl & cloth trim.

PAINT: eg 568-17777, Papaya. PRIME if a replacement shell.

TOP: if the top was a different colour or had a vinyl roof, it is marked here.

Then across the Bottom,
ENG. eg.L31 TRANS. eg.M21 RR.AXLE eg.GU7

ENG. = L16 - , L18 - Opel 1900 4Cyl, L20 - 202 6Cyl, L23 - , L31 - 308 V8, L32 - 253 V8, L34 = High performance 308 V8 - LH only, LD1 - 173 6cyl, LD2 - 173LC?.

TRANS. = M15 - , M20 - std ratios, M21 - close ratio V8 box, M40 - Trimatic, MC2 - , MC6 - Opel 4spd, MC7 - Super T10, rare as rocking horse shit to be on this plate.If you find a car with this, contact RedA9X immediately.

AXLE. = GU7 is 2.78:1, GU4 is 3.08, GV4 is 3.55 or 3.36?, GU8 is 3.9?, what was 4.11?, G70 is 2.60 (available in Salsbury/A9X only)

To be Continued.....

Bs and Ds could be confused on the VIN plate so check the Model No on the Body ID plate as well.

8VD69 = SL/R
8VC69 = SL
8VB69 = S

8VD77 = SS
8VC77 = SL
8VB77 = S

Ive been contacted by HG350 - Peter and Millissa and i was asked to let everyone know that they are able to, and offering to verify the VIN on these special cars for you.

As far as i'm aware, They have access to the original Holden records and so can confirm the authenticity of a certain car by all its numbers.

Please begin by PMing HG350 with all the rellevant numbers so that they can do their checks, but if you havent gotten a reply within a few days then they have allowed us to post their mobile numbers to contact.

Peter mobile 0417 867 974
Millissa 0431 22 22 46

PLEASE do the right thing by these great people who have given us this great opportunity to make the right decisions when buying a possible investment vehicle!

They have done this because theyre very busy people and often dont get to check the forum on a regular basis.
I urge anyone who's going to purchase a car of value like an XU1 or GTR to contact Peter/Millissa as they can give you the lowdown on your prospective purchase!

Cheers and thanks again to Peter and Millisa for their kind offer of this invaluable assistance!

Regards
Tiny.

Hi Guys, I'm only new to the site and the Torana scene but I have an issue with SS ID's. I've been looking for a ridgey SS for some time now in decent condition either project or turn key. I was just wondering if someone can tell me what this hatch is as the numbers are a bit confusing (or shonky) they are as follows

VIN-8D77RG J54954X
PAINT- 568-15991
TRANS-M20
ENGINE-L32
BODY-54954M
MODEL-LX8VD77
BUILD-11-76
CHASSIS-BLXO 26262M

Now I know all the tags say it's a 253, 4 speed black ss but do all these correspond to the chassis number in anyway?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

cheers

The chassis number given should match the number stamped on the drivers side ADR tag. There is no other cross reference apart from checking the micro fiche.

Hi Guys.

That's not quite correct, Toranavista. There are other cross checks you can do.
For instance the model code on the VIN plate should match the model code on the body ID plate, I've seen many that don't. Also the year code letter in the VIN should line up with the compliance date. The engine code letter in the VIN must match the 2nd letter in the engine prefix. One more, is that the 1st letter of the chassis number e.g. ALX or BLX should line up with the compliance date as well.

This is the reason we ask for the info off all 3 plates as well as the engine & chassis numbers, so we can do all of that. You can also check stuff where a guy might have a very early engine number in a late chassis etc.

I found an LH/LX/UC Centre Plate ID Checker that is helpful:

TORANA LH / LX / UC VIN CHECKER

I believe this site is run by a forum member, so I hope it's not a repost.

Cheers,
Pete

The axle code refers to the ratio, not the type of diff. 2 ratios were available in A9X, 3.08 (GU4) and 2.60 (G70)

Nice work to author(s).

One important omission, you might want to add words about the paint combination colour, in the example 1916 on the TRIM line has nothing to do with the trim itself. This confuses plenty of people, and probably rightly so. And maybe also explain the prefix of the Dulon paint formula ie 568 = solid colour, 567 = metallic etc.

Also noticed thers are a few missing codes for the BODY plate (although some are export only):

L16, LD2, L23 for Engine;
M15, MC2 and MC6 for Transmission;
GV4 and GU8 for Rear Axle.

Again, good job to whomever has started this.

T10 was only a dealer fitted option for A9X, therefore would not appear on body plate, ever.

Never got around to finishing it in the last incarnation of the forum, although it was complete on a board before that.

As I am aware (RedA9X to confirm) T10 is on one, possibly two cars, one of which is an A9X sedan.

As said, adjust where necessary, but donot change the format. My intellectual property might get a headache. :P

MC7 would never appear on a road car tag, but race shells are a different story. The sedan Grant mentioned is a race shell, not a road car.

I read somewhere ages ago that the 'V' in LX8VD77 etc was something about vehicle size.
Intermediate from memory.

V sort of changed. This is how they ended:

T = Gemini, started with TA Torana.
U = Torana ie LH, LX, UC however Torana started as V ie VD69, VC77 etc.
V = Commodore ie VB, VC, etc
W = Holden ie HQ-WB. Doesn't show on HQ but from HJ on they are WM69, WQ37 etc

V continued onwards into VN through to VE. W started up again with later Statesmans.

Not very big mate, but we're putting up good fences. :P

MC7 is also the Super T10, not your run of the mill T10......
Must remeber that for adjusting the article.

hows it going all

just about finished the paint on my hatch , reading the identification section

the vin number reads 8c77LH -----------
which the H means 78?
the i.d plate reads 12/77
all other numbers match , plates chassis number etc etc

is that a common thing to occur??

cheers

The GMH year calender for compliance commences Sept each year. So a vehicle complianced Dec 77 would have H as the year code.

Hi All
New to the site.
I just spotted a LH Torana on Ebay and the bloke is stating it is a factory V8. He has pictures of the all the Comp plates but I'm not sure that they are orginal. The ADR plate says it was built in 5-74 but going by the vin plate code of 8B69RF J496924H the F means it was made from Sept 1975 to end of Aug 1976. Am I right about that going off the info about codes on this site. Does this mean the vin plate and model plate are off another shell???????
