Yep, as Laurie says, the body plate was fitted before the engine bay got painted, the other two tags were fitted later.

LH and early LX engine bays were black, later LX engine bays were body colour (there's some conjecture over exactly when this changeover occurred but that's for another discussion).

That engine would have to be the original for that car wouldn't it? It's the lowest engine number I've seen in an LX so far. Just out of interest, do you have the date code cast on the block (I'd guess it's something like "2M5")?

EDIT:

Oh I forgot... It's a little hard to tell from those photos but that looks like the integrated factory A/C that got fitted on the production line?

Hey Andrew,   I do remember giving the engine and box away so many years ago :( . Found the number on my rego papers as I have just registered it again and have not done the engine change to rego department .

My list only has a few numbers around that one but it does seem to slot in there nicely... not that it's likely anyone would play games with a base model anyway?

That's good news.. I thought the serial looked a little early but if it seems ok, then makes me feel better.. agreed tho.. it's only a S.. not much to gain by swapping plates..

Brad, do you have an E or and F in your VIN after 8D69T(?).. the chassis is marked as a 1976 but the compliance is 1975

Cheers guys..

out of interest, why does the 202 have 2 engine codes? L & M?

out of interest, why does the 202 have 2 engine codes? L & M?

L = 3300/202 High Compression engine

M = 3300/202 Low Compression engine

The  ALH, BLH etc is to do with ADR changes.

The VIN is correct having an F (1976), the GMH year rolls over in September. The ADR plate is also correct in showing 1975.

How long did it take to manufacture a vehicle at GMH in 1975 ?. What month in 75 did they start the production of the LX ? With my tail lights stamped 24/11/1975 I would guess it would have taken a few months t get to this stage ? Has anyone else seen the date stamped in other areas ?

Hi,

I've recently been given the opportunity to purchase my mates LX SS. They've owned the car since 1985 however I thought I better check all the number to be safe. From the information i read in this thread it seem everything is ok however the body stamp isn't quite 100% match.

Now I know back in the 70 you could have a few beers on lunch so i'm not sure if the guy stamping may have had one to many when doing this car. You'll see what i mean.

ADR

LX Torana Coupe

10-76 BLXC2337CM

VIN

8D77TG J546119X

Body id plate

Model LX8VD77

Body No 546119M

Trim 1916-18X

Paint 568-17777

Engine L31

Trans M21

Raxle GU7

Body Stamp

BLX023370M

What do you guys think? Does C look like 0 if you squint.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tony

Yeah I wouldn't be too worried about it, anyone who inspects it will understand that things like that happen, technically the stamped chassis number is the legal identifier anyway, the compliance plate just states that the vehicle meets (or at least met) the standards.

You can get a car registered without a compliance plate altogether providing it's been registered within Australia previously.

BTW, it is illegal to have the compliance plate attached with self tappers though, the legislation says it must be "permanently affixed" so it needs to be riveted.

Apart from that everything seems like it lines up, looks like you've unearthed a genuine L31 M21 SS, congrats!

Remove the Compliance plate and look at the stampings from the back. Think you'll find they are all good.

Would make a big difference
