got an autometer tacho from a mate and its all hooked up good. but it reads 500 rpm below factory tacho. its an lx 253 with points dissy. reads the same across the board. is the factory tacho just reading 'optimistically' like a speedo.

The factory ones aren't overly renowned for being accurate, but you never know with 2nd hand gear.
You can get hand held electronic tacho's, I would try to find one and verify the rpm directly off the harmonic balancer.
Or source another gauge from somewhere and compare it with the other 2.
