I've pulled this engine down more times than most would (to update things) and have never come accross any undue scores or marks in the bores from not running filters.
If I was going to daily the thing, or do a reasonably long trip, I'd definitely run the socks, but for the driving I do (and the amount) I just run the open trumpets.
I'm running the same thermo I have always run (single 10 or 12" unit)
Got a bit anal on the weekend and remade the whole rear section of the exhaust (from the extractors back)
Got it tucked up a heap more, have moved the rear resonator closer to the floor and fitted up the dump tip. Looks MUCH cleaner now.
Fixed some small leaks (Gbox, sump plug, fuel pump, coolant out thermo housing)
Balanced up the carbies, threw 8 degrees initial at it, runs very smooth now!
Wheel alignment is organised for one arvo this week, then we hit the Dyno on saturday

Called in at the panel/paint shop (Rust and Smash Shop, Long Jetty) to see what Steve thought of the paint damage, have decided to strip and repaint the entire front clip (front doors, front guards, nosecone etc)
Then carried on to Apex Automotive at the Entrance to see an old mate, Luke, who in between paid work and us talking shit, fixed up the shitty toe, and attempted to get some more neg camber out of it.
Ended up with about .5 degrees of negative camber as the bolts holding the bar and shims arent long enough. Was hoping for about 2 degrees, but that can wait till next time.
have it set to toe out a bees dick.
Steering feels good, turns in nice, however the new lower poly bush we turned up for the steering column is too tight and wont allow the steering to self centre. So that has to come out and be adjusted.
We were then going to call at another friends place (John Macki at Erina Ultratune) for some Dyno time, but unfortunately John called and told us he was sick and we would have to go another day.
BUT!
we still went on a short cruise yesterday (sunday) did about 50kms of driving, pulls VERY strong low down and wants to rev like crazy. 205/45/16s arent really much of a resistance barrier though.... lol
Didnt push it over about 4500-5000rpm as its still untuned, pulled the plugs and they look a little bit lean (running avgas, so atleast we know the plugs give an accurate measure, unlike the crap we get from servos these days)
Now made plans to hit the dyno tuesday night.

No copies of the graph at the moment, but heres a main course of events-
First run showed a massive rich spot down low (Im guessing from moving the power band higher up the rev range with the new cam)
after a heap more runs, throwing another 5 degrees intial advane at it and changing chokes, mains, airs, emulsion tubes etc etc we were still trying to get rid of a major "trough" in the middle of the AFR map.
Its running a little lean in the early RPMs, richens up MASSIVELY and then leans out again aroun 5500rpm.
We were just changing out some more things when the fan belt decided to cry "no more"
It had turned itself inside out a few runs earlier, but tore itself to shreds this time round at about 4500 rpm haha.
At that stage we were sitting around the 175hp mark (considering its running a 3.08 diff and 205/45/16 tyres I'm comparitively happy)
I think there is atleast another 20-30hp in it, if we can straighten out the AFR curve, get it running at the correct lambda across the range and rev it all the way to the expected drop off (6500)
I've got a couple short videos that I'll whack up later.
Heading back next tuesday night

this is the sexiest 4 door torana i have ever seen ! cannot wait to see it (again) at TORANAFEST in September. will you be displaying at All Holden Day Show in August at Richmond ?Well havent done much with the torana, driven it a few times since toranafest though! love getting it out for a cruise now its "complete"
still have a few things to sort out, need to buy a -6 cap to fit over the drain on the catch can, need to sort out the alarm wiring and stuff and get the new dash finished (ordered my last gauge from the states last week)
Really need to put a ryco filter back on it though, Fitted a donaldson one (freebie from work) but they are designed for diesel engines and vertical mounting, so no drainback valve=clacky noises on startup!
Might give it a run up to newcastle in the morning (going to auto one to pick up some rares parts)
and just cause I love this pic

I'll physically be at the all Holden day, but wont have the car there, its just too long of a day to justify to be honest (plus a reasonable drive!)
all going to plan, I will definitely be at toranafest this year! Hoepfully with the new dash finished too!

Dont mind the shitty paint on the pipes, they are only temporarily blown over until tuning etc is sorted, then they will be off to get ceramic coated (chrome finish) along with the inlet manifolds (black)

and a quickie from when I was at a mates shop getting the wheel alignment done-

while it was in the shed being rebuilt, a box of chrome ends (exhaust bits) took a dive off the top of a pantry cupboard (so 1.9ish tall) and down between the drivers door and the bonnet that was leaning against the cupboard next to the car.
So, I figured while I was at it, I'd get a few things fixed up.
so I'm getting the following done-
Bonnet dent from old SU setup touching repaired
Bonnet resprayed top and bottom
Front guards, nosecone, front doors repaired and resprayed
Rear PS door repaired and resprayed (has a small dent from what looks like someones door.... considering its onyl been left on its own a handful of times in the last 8 years, that pisses me off)
The sills and window blackouts are being redone in fresh gloss black
And the whole car is getting a light cut and buff.

Drivers side flare has been repaired (ground back, rewelded and nickied again)
There are no less than 20 spots of tape on the bonnet marking imperfections and slight dents or marks, many down the front guards and doors too.
Should be GREAT to see it looking better than ever. The original panel and paint were a quick job, it was only ever meant to be a daily.... so a little more attention should see it better than ever!

I'll be at toranafest though (thats the deadline)

and tucked away (needs another good wash and polish before putting a cover over it)

you can also make out the dust over everything in the engine bay AND the first time in like 18 months that its had filter socks (makes it run like balls, too restrictive)

Insides of the doors and mechanisms got treated to some re-fishoiling and lubrication. there was ZERO rust anywhere in the doors, bit of a testament to how well fishoil can work, I havent had the door trims off in 8 years!

Car up, wheels off, full detail of the gloss black front crossmember (covered in dust, and unfortunately, some of it with orange speckles....)

put karlie to work polishing the wheels (she seriously does an awesome job with the metal polishing! I get the shits quickly with it, she has a longer attention span)

The dodgy supercheap carport is the utes home for the minute, just got my DA approved for the new shed (6x6 built onto the back of the current shed) and carport (from the deck to the fence)
cant build the carport till I have the concrete done for the shed, need to get the truck down the driveway
So couple nights this week are putting the front back together and finishing polishig the roof and rear 1/4s in prep for toranafest!

the exhaust has actually suprised me.
I thought it would be pretty loud, but its actually really tame at low revs, but pretty loud at full noise!
Had a very "shady" package arrive today.
Its a special addition, just in time for toranafest.
not sure it will suit the car 100%, will definitely look better once its lowered more in the bum (purely aesthetics, for some reason really low and one of these works well)
Pics after toranfest of that one!
Also thinking of knocking up some panelling for the inside of the bootlid to cover the cracked sound deadening.
its going to be a busy few days I think!
