If you have a choice between a red 9 port head and a blue 12 port head for a 202, is there any reason why someone would choose the red 9 port head, in terms of performance. :D

Do a search, plenty of info on this already.
9 ports can be hogged out further to give better flow, 12 ports are better standard/mild application.

The 9 ports are a lot better to work on etc, including simple things like putting hardened valve seats in.

The 12-ports are rumoured to be very prone to fracturing, which relates to Spongebob's post above lol

But yeah for flat out pushing the boundaries of Holden 6 performance, most tuners opt for a 9-port I think, because you can take the ports out so far

So if I'm thinking of getting my red 202 worked I should stick with the original head instead of buying a blue or black head.

Or you could use 9 port red converted to 12 port, old mod using aluminium dividers

If you want a mild 12-port head, you're much better using a Holden 12-port rather than making your own.

Unless you are really concerned about making your motor look original for the car or something, I don't see much point in installing the dividers; in a really hi-po application, you're not gonna benefit from it a huge amount, and in a mild application, the late model heads are a better shaped port than what you can make out of a 9-port anyway.

But yes, good on you for bringing it up because I forgot that practise.

Hey Heath,

Benefit of being wrong side of 40 years old , have tried all the holden 6 options, and sometimes can remember some of them.

Yes , old school conversion still holds it's own. especially with correct manifold and triple dual throat carbs.

I still use head with the conversion,

combustion chamber of the same head, before recent freshen up
