what to do with my torana?

  1. modify it beyond original into the blue slr i'vr always wanted (27 votes [69.23%])

  2. keep it original and buy another torana to mod (7 votes [17.95%])

  3. do a small rebuild and c how i feel after it (5 votes [12.82%])

hi all, as some know i have a one owner completely original 1977 holden torana... now i've run into a few dilemmas and i'm having trouble deciding so i've started a poll on what i should do. One side of me wants to keep the torana original and buy another to do up as an slr and the other side says stuff that idea and do what you want to that car coz it's a bloody good base to start with...
please help me....

what she looked like prewash shes been sitting in my shed since march. I finally got round to fixing her up still needs that bloody manifold gasket though but she no longer overheats bye bye thermostat :)

The problem , we have with our plain coloured UC is you have to keep dodging other cars ,they just don't see you coming ,do you have that problem ? After someone running up the back of us the other day , our UC, is in for a shock ! I say do it !

gen3 your car looks sweet stock. if its in VGC to excellent keep it stock if not spend on it unless you are prepared to sell it as is. If its less than near perfect and you dont want to spend on it then its hardly worth keeping as it appears you have a VT as your daily.

Just my thoughts. Its a tough one mate.

Hmmm..

I agree with the live once and do what you feel like.

A mates dad said to me "Oh you've modified your an idiot you should have kept it origanal it would be worth alot more"
After I had rebuilt my front end and rear suspension.

But what do I care what it's worth if I don't intend on ever selling it?



So, if you're worried about value, and you plan to sell it when your off your P's or something then, try not to do something irreversible.

But, if you do not care, then go nuts.

What does your ultimate Torana consist of?

If its motor,box,diff,brakes,wheels,paint and trim be sure you do the sums on time and cash before you lift a spanner.

Modifying a car that much is a definite full time lifestyle for at least a couple of years(probably more) using the great majority of your spare time and ALL of your money (I hope you have no other interests,no girlfriend and a great job).

If you are not prepared for that sort of commitment to a full rebuild,forget it.It will always be an unfinished car that you are never 100% happy with.
If you decide to go the whole hog,collect all the parts you want before you start,then go for it.;some people can put them together bit by bit as they go along and do it successfully,most cannot.

Dont take this the wrong way but you cant even find time to replace a manifold gasket.

It would be a great car to go nuts on,it would also be a real nice thing to keep stock.

The choice is yours.

Leave it stock on the outside and interior.

Put a BIG heart in it and the drive train to match!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Baron, but I agree with some others too. There are a few options that are the right option if you know what I mean ;)

It's a Torana; it's good. It's good how it is, mildly built, fully built, etc.

I wouldn't take on a FULL rebuild (like car comes off the road for a few years then goes back with everything replaced) if I hadn't done a fair bit of work before. You can do everything without doing it all in one big 'session'...

Best example was that bloke who came on with a stock 6cyl UC and wanted to do crazy chev, 6spd, kit, diff, interior, paint etc, and he was 16. He wanted it done by the time he was 18. I had bugger all experience working on cars back then and I told him that he should tone down the plans and make it a cheaper, more P plate friendly car. Everyone had a go at me for discouraging him.

Two years later the car had been sitting half in bare metal for a year and a half and he was driving some wanked up Commodore. I still have him on msn lol

This IS a tough one. If its in really good condition, then it might be best to leave it as it is.
If it needs work, then build your ultimate car out of it.

I agree with some others in saying that, if you want to build up your ultimate Torana, do the sums first. Would be good to set a realistic budget and try to keep to it, otherwise it will blow out of proportion. Have a look at time and work constraints etc.

My neighbour wanted to build up his ultimate Torana when he was around 17. He is now 25 and has 4 LX's sitting around, all in peices, and have all been gathering dust for about 6years. Doesn't want to get rid of them though...

My 2 cents.

i have a great girlfriend a good paying job i do have the time i have a reasonable amount of money and i have the contacts having family that are in restoration business as well as engine building

dont you have another shell aswell?

why not start with modifying/restoring it, spend time learning etc etc on it, make it into something special, then see how you feel about the good one?

I don't know what your financial situation is, but that is the most arrogant and discouraging advice

how many cars have you built? are you in the industry? whats your trade?

i deal with this everyday,everyone of my customer cars started as a quick paint job and a " i'll build it for 10 grand". it just doesnt happen.

i'm all for budget cars,infact i built a vk for under 10k that was on the cover of streetmachine commodores.

BUT,i'm a realist,budgets blow out and shit happens.all i'm saying is that be prepared to spend big cash to make a nice car

heath,when you think before you type,and get a few cars under your belt,i'm sure you'll feel the same

Im with moot.

50k is a reasonabe budget for a thorough and decent build job.

Hell its oh so easy to spend 15-20 on a half decent engine.

Etc etc.

You should fix that 1D10T error Heath.
