That's just ridiculous! You'd have to spend $30k at least building up a car, and it'd be lucky to be worth that when finished!

They probably have the S or SL all ready and waiting, then they'll stick on these tags and sell it for a premium to the next sucker that comes along.

That is what I mean, the next sucker is a sucker alright of they'd pay top dollar for an incomplete 253 auto SL/R even if they were fooled by the numbers job.

prob correct Yel, but there are some dealers you see advertising all sorts of 'tributes' and 'replicas' for absolutely big dollars.

IF they get what they ask for their cars ( that may well be on consignment?) then they would still make a very tidy profit.
These dealers are quite clear they are not the real deal cars, but the prices seem to be reflective of a ''real car '' price.?

Maybe its just that anyone can walk in with no cash, and drive out with a financed car?

Yeah and an SL/R done up as an A9X or L34 tribute would be more attractive than an S or SL imo.

Even still, if you have a shell you're going to restore, why not get these tags and do it up as an SL/R; when it comes time to sell you'll get more than a base model.

Pics are useless!

You need to actually type out the numbers. That way if the pics are shuffled by the op, the numbers are still recorded. :)

You need to actually type out the numbers

From Mick's fb post

Chassis Number: ALX054496M

Build date: 8/76

So really it should be CLX054496M

Next, the VIN Tag and the Body Tag
The Body No: 454887 is actually an LH body number. Production date was 24/10/74 and was 8B69DFJ454887H.

Firstly, any LX built after 6/76 will start with BLX and not ALX

Secondly, that Chassis No 054496M is actually a Sept 1977 built 8H77 Hatchback (body J593200)

There were no M40's built at that time due to A9X production.

The stamped chassis number on the body is so far wrong, it just dumb!
The body number: J454887 is actually an LH body number too.
built 8H77 Hatchback (body J593200)

The Body number, J454887, was originally an LH8VB69. The VIN was 8B69DFJ454887H. Production Date was 24/10/74. Engine # HD16327. The car was 2850, Trimatic, drum brakes, 2.78:1 rear axle.

I had it as a 2 then looked again and thought it was a 9 but thinking about it now it can't be a 9, will have another look, I think a 2 is right for 10/76

Checked again definitely BLX023080M

In NSW this is the number on your rego paper; for some reason they don't use the VIN.

Yep, my 10/76 is within about 780 of that.

Cheers, TB

Sure can - tag no required for rego but having said that, things change and it may depend on where you live - every jurisdiction has differing rules despite often (failed) attempts at consistency.

Would pay to speak with your local rego authority for sure.

Cheers, TB

Perhaps use the Chassis # on the ADR plate.

There are no tags and no chassis number whatsoever, no record of previous registration, so how would they go there? I'm not buying it btw, trying to save someone else the headaches.in future.

They certainly look real enough, but just curious on when they started using "A" after COUPE, and was GMH consistent

with the ADR #'s as they progressed through time...eg..27A 28.29.31.34,even though it seems some numbers were not used

did they actually at least "count up" even though some #'s were not used?,or did they chop and change?,probably info around here

somewhere about that but half the time it's easier to ask again.

A started once ADR27A came into force, only appears on ADR27A auto cars. ADR's were not numbered or set by GMH, they just complied with teh relevant ones.
