Last four digits 3824 could only be L253824, an 82211 (4cyl 2dr) completed on 20/09/73 and sold 10/73.

Ooops , my mistake reading from the back of the tag thinking it's 10/73.
Thanks for the correction Bazza.

Awesome!
You should send him a link to this thread; it'd be good to see all the dodgy ID's black-banned from rego.

Up to $2000 and it doesn't include the skinny VIN tag, crazy. And he want's local pickup only, would only cost a $1 to stick it in an envelop and post it, or for a few bucks more express with tracking and insurance, but at $2K I guess he can limit is audience and be picky.

Hi All,
I understand why, when spending big money on supposedly rare , matching number muscle cars, it is important that they are all genuine matching numbers. No arguments from me....
And to me a Torana is a Torana...... no matter what engine , gearbox or diff it runs, or what mods you make to it.... still a Torana....
but my question is ..... How much of the original body must be used to call it genuine...? how many patches can i weld in before its not original...? ..... what is the difference between cutting 95 % of the car away as rust and welding tons of patches in and cutting 5 % of the body off ... with the plates attached and welding them into another body..... where do we draw the line....?
Or if the front of an L34 is written off and the chasis rails and body numbers are replaced and is it still a genuine L34 or not ...?
I dont want to cause any arguments here or annoy the purists, but these questions have always bugged me. Can anyone enlighten me ...?
Al

This could make an interesting thread on its own. This subject creates huge arguments within the historic race car community.

Trouble is due to crooks and dodgy pr!cks trying to defraud people, common sense no longer applies.
The letter of the law is now you are not allowed to remove and replace tags.
Where the common sense part doesn't apply is to repair some of these cars you have to remove the tags. Hell on some of them (eg VB-VH) you have to remove the actual panel the tags and chassis number are attached to! At the other end of the spectrum you can rebuild a HK-HG from a bare firewall and cowl where the tags and chassis number are, replace every part of the structure bar the firewall and cowl and the car remains as it was originally. Neither of these scenarios have common sense applied.

Thanx yel327,
You are certainly right there ... common sense is not that common anymore...but does this mean if i own an L34 or A9X i can not remove a plate to keep it in the safe, or is this still permitted ...?
