Hi

The tags in post #499 above are non-matching. The VIN is GTR (not XU-1) completed 19/4/72  and the ADR and Body Identification tags are from 10/72.

Cheers

This happens a lot and you'll see mis-matching tags on the same car in quite a few instances. This post isn't really to inform people whether the tags they're buying are matching; I'm sure most here are against the selling of tags as they're likely to end up in the wrong hands. As long as we have the details typed into the posts; when people run a Google search on the numbers of the car they're buying, they will know something's not legit if the numbers appear here.

Nicely spotted though; just goes to show how shonky these sellers are.

G'day Dave

Yep - been here for 11 years but don't say much unless it is important or it simply needs to be said.

Some 'expert' on one of the Torana Facebook sites told me a couple of months ago that I should - 'get my shit together before I make a comment about tags'. I understand that he is an official of one of the Torana clubs. The irony is that 2 of the members of the same club (one of whom is also an official) texts me regularly about tag info. I had a good laugh about that one.

Cheers

Bazza help's us by saying what matches and what doesn't,

 and on a side note,

the crook's have the money to buy all the tags for sale and possibly match up the mixed one's.

That facebook page is full of experts, lol. They'll tell you how a mate of a mate's cousin heard it from a guy that worked at a used car lot that sold 2nd and 3rd hand Toranas; so it has to be true.

Hi

The point of mentioning that a set of tags that are being offered for sale don't match, is an attempt to dissuade potential buyers from going ahead with the purchase. Further, it underscores that a lot of people have their finger on the pulse of what's going on and that the buyer of such tags could stand to lose a lot of money.

Cheers

Fight crime with the same media by,

placing an ad in ebay that directs people to this thread,

and select the duration of the ad to 'Good 'Til Cancelled'.

as this thread is public.

That is one of the best ideas you've come up with Dave !!

Then again, perhaps it's better sellers don't cotton on to the fact they should cover some of the numbers ?

The 'official' excuse to buy tags is to hang them up in the shed, garage, display cabinet, etc. The fact they don't match should really be no issue; it's not like the buyer is going to sell their shed and advertise it 'complete with tags, numbers matching'. If they buy non-matching tags to put on a car, it's better for us; we can then spot the frauds.

If you ask the seller of the tags a question on ebay. The question and answer should show up on screen for all to sell. I was going to ask him if the tags match and see what he says..What do you think???????

They don't have to answer and if they do, the answer only appears if they select the box to make the answer public. If they don't answer your question doesn't appear.

How dodgy is that sale above where he even includes the section with the chassis no. Nobody collects those; he's 100% selling it to appeal to rebirthers.

Hi

He was probably told that when he bought the car. If he believes that it is true, then he would also have to believe that out of the first 6834 LJ Toranas made in Adelaide in the first 6 months of production, only 20 were GTRs or XU-1s. In fact, there were approximately 545 GTRs and XU-1s by the time that L204475 was produced. The correct Body Number should be close to 545-A.

Cheers

... or he believes his car was legit when he bought it.
