If I didn’t already have SS tags for my tag display I’d consider grabbing them to take them out of circulation so they’d never appear on a body. But they’d never go for what I’d be willing to part with. Some fool will probably buy them to put on another body thinking they can make $ out of them.

At 1000 bucks with 4 days to go.
Is there any way to find out the full ebay name of the bidder? I can only find these abbreviated ones.

Unfortunately no way to see usernames, they changed that years ago.
About the best you can hope for is the buyer or seller leave feedback and you can find out after the sale. .. which is unlikely.
Where’s the VIC crime squad email they posted up years ago?

I believe it would be best that state transport departments be advised of all these tags rather than Police because if a car presents itself for registration fitted with one of these tags it can be concluded that it will not match that vehicle therefore should be at the very least scrutinised. Police will only be interested based on an attempt by a person to dishonestly use the plate/s to gain a benefit. Imagine complaining to the Police about the hundreds of these sorts of plates that have passed hundreds of hands in the last 30 years. Their 1st question will be have they be used to defraud anyone?who are the victims? If you have a lot of time on your hands, you could send your local Dept of Transport (DOT)an e mail via their web page listing all these VINS. They then have a duty of care to act upon the information you have voluntarily provided them (which is now recorded on e mail forever). If they do not act and someone purchases a car with one of these fitted believing the VIN to be authentic and manages to register the car with DOT,and that person is defrauded of thousands of $ then DOT will be culpable for failing act.

Good point Mark.
Any idea on the correct process for reporting such activities?

Joe if you are prepared to go to all the effort you would have the support of the whole classic car community as its in our best interest to try and stop this. One could say the horse has bolted on these tags in the last 20 years or so however don't let me deter you or anyone else who wants to give it a go. I'm not good at adding links but the Qld Dept of Transport has a web page as does most Government Departments nationally and they invite queries. I have sent them a query within the last 12 months, just google their web page. Be very interesting to see what their response might be? crickets I would suspect.. You would have to tactfully draft a well worded forthright e mail explaining in detail the background to your concerns associated with these tags attached to cars that do not have tags, and ensure you mention that they are being sold on line and that if any of these tags is attached to a car presented to them for registration they may be culpable for accepting the plate/s and numbers as legitimate when they are not.

Everyone on FB seems pretty cool with those blank tags.
Yeah, I have been shaking my head over that as well.
Is there actually any difference that can easily identify them as copies? I look forward to seeing some of the stamping attempts the dodgies try on them.
99% of the ones I have had a close look at are rubbish with glaring abnormalities, but you have to look close. There is however someone out there with the original machine (I'm guessing) who is doing plates that look very close to the originals. On one of them, it was only a wrong number on the compliance plate and the fact that it was on the wrong year car that showed it as a fake. It also looked brand new.
