~ the Qld Dept of Transport has a web page as does most Government Departments nationally and they invite queries. ~

You have to remember too that tags sold on eBay / Gumtree / etc. could well be posted to any state in Oz or even NZ. To have any effect at all you would need to wrestle with the DOT in every state and territory, and even then, most don't want to know about anything too old to go on the WOVR.

What really needs to happen is for the age restriction on the WOVR to be abolished so cars of any age can be recorded, at least that way there will be some record of something hinky available to prospective buyers.

Not sure I'd like the age limit removed or adjusted

I don't want someone else deciding if my vehicles can see the road again or not

You can get vehicles taken off the WOVR, they just have to be inspected, usually to assess whether any repairs have been done safely (bodgy cut'n'shuts etc). But any competent assessor should be able to pick up on something dodgy with the numbers as well.

If people want to authenticate their tags they can always ask here. There are enough members with the required knowledge & it's free ( albeit super critical ).

GMH-T shows up with a simple Google search .

I don’t agree with this. There would be only a handful of people in Australia that can pick some of the faked cars. Some are easy, but others are very hard.

And we have seen it in the past what lengths some people will go to pass off something that its not genuine
but you cant fool the experts

And I have no doubt that there are some fakes out there that nobody could pick.

I'm not necessarily just talking about L34 or A9X, but the bulk of the tags being sold would be much more common SL/R and SS's, the ones that are getting asked about on this forum all the time.

I just reckon if the numbers were flagged on the WOVR as "Tags only sold on eBay" or similar it would at least give some indication that further investigation is required. The money people are paying these days, they should know they're not getting ripped off.

Might be a good time to compile a master list of all the 'known' authentic cars that currently exist. It has been discussed before and I know some of our members have been entrusted with some of this data already. The advent of the internet particularly in the last 5 years has greatly enhanced our exchange of information. There seems to be a few unknown cars that come out of the woodwork now and then, my car being an example. How would any of the forum members truly know whether mine is real or fake?  Would be a mine field to navigate if you were the arbiter of the decision making process (imagine the on line bullying). Would need to be an authenticating process that was transparent only to a certain group of members from this forum who have expertise on certain model cars and were voted in by forum members. Not sure if it would work without the arbiters physically inspecting the cars before certifying them as authentic, but once certified this would be a conclusive presumption  that the car is genuine and provide a certificate signed by all the group. You'd want to have a thick hide to be the arbitrator of all this.

I’m still not sure whether to leave the tags on my car or take them off

It has the original rivets, but the painter has told me he will take them off....

The answer to your question is obvious. If you don't he will, or you find another spray painter.

Safer to keep them in your possession.

Yep I have thought that also, but then others say never removes the tags. I guess if I don’t it then becomes irrefutable what the car is

Agree, better to leave the tags where they are but how do you stop the painter from removing them? Over the years there have been too many stories of tags going missing at the paint n panel shop.

Also be sure to check your trim and paint codes prior to commencing a factory resto.

Tell the painter to keep his f*cking hands off them. It’s your car. You instruct him to do your job as you want, your paying him for his services, he does what you ask.

Take a dated photo of them on the car. Do up a signed work agreement prior to starting. And state if the tags go “missing” so does his payment of works completed.

Yep, I'm with Brad on this one. Your car is an early one though Jason, so the rivets are available if you know where to look.

You can pop those early rivets out from behind leaving them intact. Just be patient with them, worth taking your time.
