It's interesting that the compliance plate doesn't have COUPE "A" seeing as it's supposed to be an M40
Did they abandon the "A" at some stage?

2-78 LX had it, but I don't have anything automatic in Torana after that. Feb-82 VH doesn't have it.

Ian, it's useless if you don't type out the chassis number, that way anyone searching for the chassis # will be directed here.

They are improving, but still obvious differences to those who look closely.

What the hell? Who has the nerve to advertise these?
In seriousness, I know that its a big no no to alter or reproduce tags. But what do people do in Aussie in the situation say their car is in an accident..or a fire? And just one tag is damaged beyond repair. Are they not allowed to get a reproduction made if they can prove the car is theirs and what it is? As they still may have the other 2 tags on the car and the body number... Or is it just tough luck??

I had a crash on my motorbike years ago.
Bike was only about a month old.
In the process of the crash and transport, the identification sticker was damaged so that it was unreadable.\
I had the dealer I bought the bike from repair the bike.
It took a bit over 3 months to get a new identification sticker reproduced.
The old sticker had to be in possession of the manufacturer before a new one would be printed.
As well as lots of photos as evidence of the damage prior to removal.
The ADR sticker I think it was, was also damaged. But the dealer didnt think it was an issue not having it reproduced.
Only the manufacturer is legally allowed to issue the VIN sticker/plate.
Back in the day if the plates were damaged, such as on LC/LJ Toranas, the panel beater straightened them up as best he could and rivetted them back on.
Thats if he could be bothered doing it.
Many were damaged badly by fitting bonnet pins in the day as well.
Cheers

AFAIK the only 2 laws relating to this are that the ADR compliance plate cannot be "tampered with". By that I understand it cannot be removed or replaced other than by the original manufacturer (or agent).
The only laws relating to the other plates do not relate to plate themselves, but it is more to do with misrepresenting the car itself by altering its ID.
This may well differ from state to state.

As it states on the compliance plate itself:
"THIS PLATE IS AFFIXED WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE AUSTRALIAN MOTOR VEHICLE CERTIFICATION BOARD"
Seems pretty clear that means anyone without approval cannot affix a compliance plate. But I haven't read the regulations, there may well be some clause in there about repairers re-affixing plates after repair?

The ruling goes something like this.
It is an offence to have a unique vehicle identifier not fitted to a vehicle without good reason.
Basically if it is needed to be removed for a legitimate reason like repair or painting then it is okay to have them not affixed to the vehicle.
I remember many years ago reading about a bloke with a Phase 3 who removed the tags and had them in a safety deposit box at the bank.

He would have knocked 100k off the price when he sold it too.
