Hey Ron,

I had seen that 240 Volvo wagon in that driveway (yellow one?), i thought they might be insulted if i asked to buy there diff hahaha. I guess i could knock on there door... It has plates on it, i thought it might be registered although it doesnt look like its moved anywhere.

I put the mags on the stato to pass rego, i really should put the stockers back on now :P.

Fitted a turbo beanie today to finish off my heat insulation and finally took some pics of the engine bay. Everything has been wrapped, even the waste gate all the way back to the cat.

The car just didnt feel right the last few days, it seemed down on power. Turns out the TPS was loose and my TPS boost control was limiting me to 11psi :P. All better now, bumped the boost up to 17psi for something to do. Goes so hard again now :P.

Toynats here i come, woot :D.

I also found a volvo diff in muswellbrook for $100, and i've ordered a custom clutch from KB clutch engineering for $350. He suggested i stick with the organic plate to save the gearbox, he will make the clutch to suite my power output.

Sweet, we will have to meet up at some stage :). Its a v8 killer ;). I'm tempted to go out for a midnight run now. So bored...

You would appreciate the noises the diff is making, tick tick tick clang clang clang *shrug*. I thought i welded everything that could make bad noises hahaha.

When i was young someone took me for a drive in a charade with a bigger turbo. The thing would come on boost just before redline haha.

It turns out that you cant buy good tires in the size i'm currently running (215/60R14). After scouring every tire website i could find i came across the Toyo r888 semi slick, they were the closest available tire i could find (205/55R14). I have just installed them on the front at the moment and the grip is amazing. I gave them a quick brake test and the fronts just keep on gripping, push the brakes hard enough and the back end starts to squirm, the rears are so crap. I could only imagine how nice they would be with some heat in them. I tried going around a corner with a bit of pace and front stayed exactly where i pointed it, the rear tires are so crap they tried to overtake me :P. After Toynats ill get two more of these Toyo's on the back :).

Nice, I'd be interested to know what they're like in the wet and what sort of kms you get out of them...

I did a fair bit of googling and some people saying 10,000km's then others saying 15,000 but i guess it really depends how and where you drive. The only other worry i had with buying semi's was that they supposedly have limited heat cycles. Some people say that after say 20 heat cycles they dont grip as well, others say that street driving wouldnt even get the tires up to temperature to heat cycle them. Another person said that even 'heat cycled' semi's would still provide more grip than your high quality street tires. These tires are meant to get grippier after being heat cycled once, and work even better when the tread is completely gone :D. I guess time will tell ;).

This guy seems to give them a good wrap, but it looks like he may be sponsored by Toyo going off the credits.

Id be interested in how they go in the wet too, how much worse can they be compared to the old tires. They were so scetchy :P.

I've had some shithouse tyres in my time ! sava's or wanli , coupled to a v8 in the wet are not a good choice !!!!!!!! though 140 km/hr 3rd gear drifting 3 lanes of freeway in the wet is fun ....not that i would ever do that !

The view from the front of my house. I think i have a problem! (There all hidden away now, can only see the soobie. Everything is registered exept the Cortina) I might also have 2 more cars in the back shed, another HQ at our farm and another celica at my sisters house (We ended up buying two celicas for my nephews first car, second one was better so we have sold the sparesy and it should be gone next weekend!). The brown celica is my nephews and the blue cortina is my mates new project we picked up yesterday. We are doing the Cortina paint and panel at my place so i've shipped the Statto off to his shed. He lives just around the corner about 100m away :P. Once school holidays are over my nephew will go home and take his celica with him, he's only on his L's and wanted to do some driving :).

Woohoo, looks like i wont miss out on Toynats :D. The welds in my diff just broke allowing some movement in the gears and the center pin came loose hitting the pinion again, i only put 5 welding rods into it :dontknow:. Any tips on making it stay locked this time? I'm thinking of welding bar between the gears.

a hand full of nuts and bolts and weld the shit outta the whole lot!...utilise the nuts/washers and bolts as reinforcement for your welds..........lol.............hmmmmmmm on second thoughts maybe not!

I've heard of people making snug-fitting steel plates instead of the nuts and bolts too

Soooo errr, i might have overdone the welding? I put 5 pieces of 10mm bar into each side. I love the nuts and bolts idea! I have a Tru-track center for a volvo diff but i wont have the volvo diff converted until after this weekend :(. The volvo diffs are meant to be bullet proof and they dont need cutting down as there only a few mm wider the original one.

If it breaks this time it should do it well!

The diff is now back in, just have to put the wheels on. The gearbox is out, while i was tightening the pressure plate bolts one got really easy... I undid it and the broken thread was held on by a slither of bolt. I dont trust any of the old bolts now so ill buy new ones tomorrow, then its gearbox back in and skids ;).

Has anyone ever seen uneven wear on the clutch plate, the inside is worn more than the outside (worn almost down until the lines are gone). A quick google suggests that when the clutch overheats it warps causing the uneven wear? The flywheel still looks good so hopefully it will be fine, it was machined 2500km's ago...

I use 10mm thick steel cut to fit neatly between the gears, then weld similar to what you have done. The current diff (Hilux)has been used for the past 4 or 5 years.
You clutch is probably slipping which is over heating & causing it to wear like you have described. When you have changed your diff, it might be time for a different style of clutch.

I had a clutch made by KB Clutch Engineering, he recommended that i keep the organic plate to save the gearbox etc but he's made the clutch/pressure plate to suite my power output +15%. We will see tonight :). After this weekend no more burnouts because ill be putting two more r888's on the back, i cant afford to keep replacing them :P.

Well i thought my celica was ready, new clutch is awesome and doesnt slip but the bloody pin inside my welded center has come loose again after booting it a few times :(, The wheels are locked together fine just the pin that goes through the diff keeps cracking the welds and hitting the pinion :(. I will win so i can drive it on the weekend ;). I cant wait until i do the volvo conversion :P. I guess ill just pull the diff center apart, remove the crown wheel and remove the offending pin. Bah :P.

in theory !!!! after that much weld the thru pin does nothing? as long as the welds from the side gears to hemi are deep though beeing cast to steel they are going to crack out! but i know bugger all about diffs ;-) so jam some more weld at it .... whats the worste that can happen
