Thanks Rory, a superb effort once again. I have cut my caliper mounts out of 12mm aluminum plate, you mention that you have had problems with bending. Would I be better off starting again using steel plate?

i cant believe neil didnt say anything?
hope i dont upset anyone, but i wouldnt be recommending people follow that conversion.

That bracket is very narrow, and there is drilling, tapping, grinding going on to the stub axle.
heres my version..Posted Image

Wheels vary..15" Simmons dont go anywhere near fitting but 14" Hotwires do...so you will need to check your wheels offset and mount face/spokes if they clear. The NISSAN comes off tomorrow.
R

If you use a 10mm spacer, they clear the nuts on the back of 15x9.5 inch Simmons, thats what Im running on the front.

What size rim Brett? I am guessing it is not a 14 or 15" as needed by Rocket and me. This version works for us. The bracket is steel, not alloy..if you can bend it be my guest. The grinding is to bring the caliper in to clear said rims. Drilling and tapping a steel stub sits OK with me.

When I got this conversion make up about 5 yrs ago, the company that I used, Race Engineering in Sumner Pk, Brisbane designed it to use 15 in simmons, thats why we modded the stubs, as Rory says to use smaller wheels, a 14 x8 Hotwire fits straight on aswell. This conversion is not something I just thought up, it was designed and made by this company to suit what I needed it for. I havent had any problems with the alloy bracket, but if steel makes you feel more confident, way to go.

The calipers are GTR 32 import units.

Just looking at Rory's and Brett's brackets I would go with the Torana stub. This allows the bracket to be a bit beefier and doesn't upset the steering geometry.

Nice work guys, well done !!

Another awesome post Rory, Between this one and the R31 skyline diff post your research and ingenuity have been invaluable.

As I will be running VT 296 x 28mm discs with 16" V5 Simmons I gather I will need to modify the template to suit the larger discs. Any ideas on the size difference or whether you believe the standard template will suffice

Cheers

Tim

Your bracket would be more like Bretts Tim..You would get away without the grinding and drilling thing because of the bigger wheels...If you trial fit with alloy brackets to get your template you could then get them done in steel. The basics are there..just a bit of fiddling for your application. Looking at Bretts pic, you could nearly guessimate the size and differences just looking at/measuring the bolt up holes..if you get my drift.

Diddn't Datto mention that the other larger callipers are to suit a 296mm rotor, would RaceLX just be able to use that on the same bracket??

No worries Rory, I had actually been thinking of that last night, I will most likley be running 16" wheels so the clearance wont be an issue then. I will have to have a play around with it once I get myself an income again

Hi Jason

I did look at the AP Racing calipers that Datto has talked about previously, however looking at around $1500 for a pair compared to around $400 for nissan 4 spots (rebuilt) I cant really justify the additional $1000 odd dollars despite the fact AP racing ones are the ducks guts.

Now if i had won the $50 mill........

Why not ? The caliper mounts on a Torana stub are closer to the spindle than they are on an HQ stub axle. What am I missing ???

I was wondering that too Struggler, I can only assume that the bolts interfere with each other - perhaps where the new hole needs to be drilled in the HQ stub would be halfway across the standard hole on a Torana stub?

Wow! Great tutorial Rory!

Thanks for sharing and also everyone else's insight! It's what this forum is all about!

This might be a conversion for when I upgrade my front end next time! For the moment HZ brakes are pretty good! HAHA!

^^ Have a look at Bretts pic and the rim clearance. Also bearing in mind as I said previously, different rims give different clearences.Thats a 16" in the pic I am guessing...unless I missed what you are refering to?
