After nearly three years on the road, i decided this car needed a revamp in appearence. I've owned a few Toranas of all models but i've only ever owned one LH-LX with flares & spoilers, so after much procrastinating, i took the plunge & decided to flare this car. I read & re-read Ruts' thread in the panel/paint section a few times to gain some insight into how to proceed & starting around 11am yesterday with the help of my good friend Joe (unclefestal34s) we had the flare kit & front spoiler fitted by 8pm last night. Can't give Joe a big enough rap, having only ever assisted in re-fitting flares to an already flared car 17 years ago, i was very nervous & apprehensive in cutting/drilling into my car's shiny paintwork but with Joe's expertice & knowledge of flared cars, his much needed encouragement & assistance plus using his yellow L34 as a guide, we had the flares fitting near perfect with only a couple of minor tweaks needed before i can paint them. Thanks Joe!! Anyhow, here's how the car looks now, along with a swap from square to round headlights & genuine LX SL/R door mirrors.

Looks sweet... You'll be wanting wider wheels soon! I noticed you don't have the huge gap from the bottom of the indicators to the spoiler like you see on so many other cars, how'd you manage that? (i'm too sick at the mo to try & work it out haha) It'll all come together once it's all painted the same as well, can't wait :D

Edit: maybe there isn't as much of a gap because your car is a LH & the indicators are mounted lower than a LX? (like I said, I'm sick & I probably don't know what the hell I'm talking about ! haha)

Pretty sure thats the trick JED, the spoilers were designed for LH then just grafted onto LX's with the big ugly gap.

Looks good Man, find it hard to believe you did this, but alas, looks good haha.

Cheers.

To be honest, a rust blister on the right rear wheel arch/quarter made the decision too easy for me. IMO it made more sense to cut the guards & flare it then only have to paint the flares/spoiler instead of having to r&r & paint the whole shell just because of a repair the size of a coke can. To do it properly anyhow. Wider wheels/tyres are definately on the cards, not sure whether to run another pair of 8s with wider offset or go for 10s. Any advice from flared Torana owners? Hoping someone can also possibly offer some advice as to what size tyres to run, looking at either 245x60x15 or 255x60x15. Bomber, you're right on the money about the spoiler/indicator gap, early LH until late 1974 had the indicator fitted lower than later LH-LX & my car has the rare early front apron panel.

I agree, that bit of rust would make it an easy call, especially if you were thinking about it for a while.

Good on ya mate. Love seeing your work.

Cheers.

Regarding the front spoiler, the blinkers on LX are further up which is why there is a gap.

Regarding the flare fit-up. Matt, I really wish I was near you so I could come watch you at work, I love watching all of your creations and you are an absolute credit to your trade.

Talk to Matt (MRLXSS), he runs 15's on his LX, and I think they are 255's.

Almost two months after initialy trial fitting the flares, they are finally painted & fitted to the car. Without anywhere to work on my car or access to a proper paint oven, i had to perform all the work including hi-filling, rubbing, painting etc at either my father's house or by the generosity of a couple of good friends who offered their help & garage space, which is partly why it has taken so long to finish the job. I must say a BIG THANKS to unclefestal34s (Joe) whiteknight (Keith) & Ruts (Dennis) for their help, without which i wouldn't have been able to do the job. Thanks guys.

Thanks Gene, the 2850 badges were never popular with the crowd & i copped a fair bit for fitting them. If i had access to a paint oven i would've welded up the holes & left the guard blank, i got away with painting the flares in my old man's garage but i wouldn't contemplate painting any of the larger panels there. I didn't want to portray the car to be anything it isn't by fitting SL/R badges or decals, so i thought seeing as it has an injected 5.0ltr, "5000i" was more befitting.

Thanks mate, that means alot knowing your background & the quality of your workmanship. I'm only one of many who have gained invalueable help & knowledge from your experience in fitting these kits & i don't think it would've turned out as well as it did without your help.

No thankyou Keith for all your help & putting up with my "excitable" moments. I'm only human & i probably let these cars get to me more than i should, but it's only because i don't like settling for near enough is good enough or second best. Thanks again.

It seems summernats doesn't have alot of support here, but i've just returned from summernats 26 with a positive experience that didn't involve women's breasts exposed or burnouts on the cruise route. Entered the orchid LH in the Rare Spares real street awards without any expectations or hopes ( i didn't think the car was good enough for this let alone summernats street class judging) & amazingly got selected as one of 25 finalists. Displayed the car on saturday & at the end of the day to my mrs (who entered the car) & my surprise, they awarded the car 1st runner up. It was beaten to the top award by an immaculate 1970 V8 Capri. To say we were pleasently shocked is an understatement, i've never seen so much as a tiny photo of any of my cars in any magazines, let alone won anything. Thanks to all who helped get the car where it is today, big thanks to Keith (White Knight) & Joe (unclefestal34s).
