Thanks fellas, yeah the diff is a little too wide, about 3/4 of an inch each side. The car it came out of had flared guards so i'm guessing it was built accordingly. I've had nothing but dramas with this diff & i really wish i'd had my own built rather than buying this one but at the time it was convenient to get this one. The diff is one thing i'll look at changing in the future but for now i just want the car on the road. I'm starting to run out of steam working a full time job, then coming home & working on the car most every night & weekend for the past six months so i'll be relieved once it's finished. The heater box clears perfectly, my mate didn't even know i'd modified it until i told him. It would not have cleared without modification. Colour should be going on the car in just over a week's time then the fun part begins, putting it all together. Cheers Matt

Hi Lee. What a day i had yesterday. got the day off to get the exhaust done as a mate was trailering it to the shop for me. Finished bleeding up the brakes 11pm thursday night, my mate turned up at 8am yesterday to pick the car up. Drove it onto the trailer & began strapping it down. Oh sh*t brake fluid is leaking out. One of the new brake lines wasn't quite tight enough so stuffed around for half an hour re-checking on the lines. Got to the exhaust shop at 9am. The extractors are too close to the floorpan & touching the fuel/brake lines on the driver's side. No probs, it'll be ready saturday. OK cool. Off to my mate's work to pick his VN SS up to take it to the dyno tuner in Penrith. Once that's done, we drove to my mate's place in Parramatta & unhooked the car trailer, then drove back to my place in Canterbury to relax for the rest of the day, we won't need the car trailer again today. 4pm i get a phone call, Torana is finished can you pick it up at 5pm?. Sure, we'll drive back to Parramatta to get the car trailer, see you at around 5.30pm. Got there at 6.30pm. Friggin Sydney traffic! Finally got home at 7.30pm but what a relief, the Torana starts, drives & stops & won't wake the dead when i fire her up. I wanted to go for a drive around the block but i'm still trying to get a heater core so there's no coolant in the radiator & i can't run the engine for very long. Oh well i'm so close now i can wait a few more days. Anyhow here are some pics i took this morning. Camera is stuffed so they're not the best but you'll get the idea.Posted Image
I don't like huge pipes sticking out the bum of my Toranas, so all my V8 Toranas get chevy drop pipes since i can remember. My exhaust guy hates making them but does it for me anyway.
Posted Image
For legal reasons, my Torana has to run cat convertors so he fitted dual stainless steel ones for me.
Posted Image
He also fitted flange plates at the extractors & just before the diff & ran the tail pipes under the diff so i can drop the tail pipes & run two small dumpers before the diff.
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
I can't speak highly enough of my exhaust man's work, but then he's done three cars for me & knows what i want. Finally organised a paint oven to use next weekend so for the rest of this weekend i think i'll relax as next saturday i'll be blocking & masking the Torana, then hopefully painting it on sunday. Finally got a really good well priced bonnet too. A big thanks to unclefesta Posted Image

Cheers Matt

looks good Matt bummer about the fuel/brake lines hitting but aleast they are all sorted out now, as soon as i read this bit.[quote] Oh sh*t brake fluid is leaking out" first thing i thought was the prop alve was stuffed but also good to know it wasnt Posted Image i like the way you go with the exhaurst with the chevy pipes ( but not really my cuppa tea ) but hey its your car and thats all that matters in the end, and a good idea that you had 2 flanged dump pipes fixed up i bet it will give it a different note when there on hey?? how do you go for ground clearence with the pipes going under the diff ?? still got decent clearence there too ?? and if ya dont mind me askin but what were the stainless cats worth ? not mates rates, real price as the tuck up real nice and tidy, job well done oh and i bet my ass you havent sat and done nothing this weekend on the Torana either !!!!!!!!!
YOU CANT HELP YOUR SELF !
its so close now mate also cant wait to see it in colour

You know me too well hey Lee Posted Image . Didn't really do much to the old girl today, repainted & re-bushed the rear sway bay & just stared at it all day he he Posted Image Yeah the chevy dumps aren't to every one's liking but having two big pipes sticking out the bum of the car & 2850 badges on the guards didn't seem right. With the pipes more discreetly positioned it'll hopefully leave some people guessing as to what's actually under the bonnet. It's not overly loud which is what i wanted as i have something different planned for the car next year, & want to keep it as subtle as i can. Clearence is good now, my exhaust guy knows his stuff. It should easily pass engineer, blue slip & decible testing. Ceramic cats are cheaper but don't last long in hyped up 5.0ltrs & these cats were the most expensive part of the system. $500 each retail fitted but i got them for $370 each. I'm a bit nervous about putting the paint down next weekend, this will be my first full repaint in 2K & my first repaint in 9 years. I have a painter mate who'll watch over me & give me a few tips so i'm hoping it'll all be good but we'll wait & see.

cheers Matt

Thanks mate, i've nearly achieved what i set out to do in the beginning, do a quality ground up rebuild in six months myself with very little help, though the help i have had has been greatly appreciated Posted Image . Once i get a heater core in it & can fill the cooling system i'll try & post a vid of it running. To be honest it's not that loud, my exhaust guy asked if i wanted it quiet or noisy & as i want to get this car engineered & legal i asked him to make it EPA friendly.

Cheers Matt

Hi

Are you keeping the pod filter as i got told by RTA inspector that it would not pass unless it is enclosed?
Should be a great looking car when you have finished it.

G'day.

I like your car too, has given me some inspiration in this build. Yeah the pod filter isn't strictly legal, though a mate who has his rego ticket told me if i enclose it as you've pointed out it will be legal. I wanted to run an air box as you've done on your car but then i would've had to relocate the battery to the boot or to where you've mounted your's. It was easier to do it the way i have for now.

Cheers Matt

Hi Lee.

Thanks mate, though you should be proud of what you've done with your car. I showed Mick the pics of it here on the forum & he was mighty impressed. You've got yourself a genuine 10 second street car, something else to be proud of, which i bet you are. I know i would be Posted Image We couldn't figure out your brake master cylinders though, are they Wilwood or something you made up yourself? Mick's car is a beast that's for sure, can't wait to see it run once it's back from the tuner. He's got me thinking about some forced induction for my car too
Hmmmmm........

Thats fair enough about the filter mate. Id keep those rego plates as they suit the era of the car.

The plates are staying on the car, that's already been sorted out, not remakes either but the very plates you see in the pics. Both my Toranas have the old original issue plates on them & i plan to keep it that way. Don't see too many around with them these days, most people put personalised plates on but i've never been a fan of them. Also suits the original badging on the car too, most people remove the badges, but i was told that i can be fined for advertising the car as being powered by a "2850" engine when it actualy has a 5.0ltr engine. Guess i'll find out when & if i have a close encounter of the blue kind once the car is on the road.

Cheers Matt

Thanks Ruts, i've read some of your posts & admire your work to. Lee, well i'm glad to say after a marathon weekend, IT"S PAINTED!Posted Image I started actualy last week priming & edging the bonnet i got off unclefesta, he came through at the right time, thanks mate. Anyhow, saturday morning i bolted the bonnet & guards on hopefully for the last time & took these last pics of the Torana in it's coat of Mt Druitt metallic.

My good mate mick came through yet again with the use of his VY wagon & trailer to take the car to the smash shop i hired to rub & paint the car. Couldn't use my work as they aren't very sympathetic to what i'm doing with my car & wouldn't allow me the use of the workshop for the weekend.
Posted Image
Posted Image
My mate Mick even though he's a mechanic by trade, is an all round handy bloke with cars so when he offered to help block the car back i said no probs, any help i can get with the car is appreciated. He done well, we blocked the car dry with P240, then guide coated & blocked it again with P320, then finally a wet rub with P800. By 8pm saturday night we were both knackered but the car was almost ready for paint.
Posted Image
Posted Image
As i've done all the panel & paint work myself on this car, i originally planned to paint it myself, but after 15 hours of blocking & sanding i was buggered, so when a good mate who is a tradesman painter offered to drive down from Newcastle & lend a hand i could hardly refuse. After a good blow out & clean up we finally got the car in the dilapidated old deisel oven & began masking it up around lunch time yesterday.
Posted Image
Posted Image
The moment of truth. The colour i painted the car wasn't going to cover with the 2 1/2 litres of paint i had so we put a grey ground coat down first. By now i'm starting to get excited Posted Image .
Posted Image
Posted Image
This is when the problems began. The sh*tbox oven i paid $300 to hire was constantly losing air pressure, & when we went to use the spray/bake cycle, we found there was a major problem with the igniter/burner. It was being fed deisel from a hose in a 20 litre fuel drum & would run for around 20 seconds or so then cut out, so i had to stand by the burner & constantly switch it back on. It took over half an hour to get up to 40 degrees & it's maximum temp reached was 45. I had to do this while my mate applied the colour & clear so i couldn't take anymore pics. An hour & a half later the car was painted but it was getting late, so we switched off the oven & opened it up to try & "shock" cure the paint so we could unmask it & load it on the trailer. It was very stressful unmasking a freshly painted car that was still a little tacky. Anyhow, we got it done & the car was back home at 11.30pm last night. A big thanks to my mates Mick & Mark & also Kirsty & my wife Belle. The car isn't perfect but i'm happy with it & it came up pretty straight & doesn't need any buffing.

Gday, mate just wanted to say fantastic job with the car so far! I've read the entire 9 pages of this rebuild and cant wait to see how she turns out. Nice color too! i think the LH chrome bumpers will set it off nicely. Any idea on wheels for it yet? choose carefully! i've always thought that wheel choice can make or break the look of a car..anyways Gluck with it and keep up the good work :spoton:

Haven't decided on rims for it yet, i have a set of VY SS 18s a mate loaned me & a set of silver stockie Commie rims for now, i'm thinking of some nice chrome rims or if i can find a set of nice Simmons for it. I can't wait to start fitting all the chrome trims & bars & stuff. Will post some more pics as i started fitting bits to it.
