Hi Guys

I remember reading about Sheet metal 9" housings before but cant seem to find the thread, maybe i am searching the wrong thing

anyway could someone post a link to it if they remember it or maybe start new here.

I would like to know if a sheet metal 9" is stronger & lighter than a normal one.
also does anyone think the sheetmetal one would be legal?

Cheers

Pick up a copy of Perth street cars, there's usually an add in it for the builder/supplier of the the sheet metal 9" diffs

Engineering something erother in O'conner.

Cheers:)

Phil Purser
Final Drive

They would be alittle bit lighter yes

And legal.... I don't know how the construction of a housing would matter to lagality anyway

I would expect the sheet metal centre to be stronger but also heavier.

You can also buy new pressed steel centres instead of modifying an original housing.

do you think the standard rear sway bar would fit?

The sheet metal diff centre does not follow the profile of the crown wheel as closely as the pressed diff centre. You would have to try the sway bar to be sure.

The standard LX sway bar that bolts to the lower trailing arms has to be moved back about 10 mm to clear the standard 9". This is the least efficient sway bar design however it does leave the most room for exhaust.

The K-MAC front mount rear sway bar (UC style) and the K-MAC rear mount sway bars will clear a standard 9".

I have the following sway bars that you can borrow to trial fit.

Standard Rear
K-MAC front mount rear (UC Style)
K-MAC rear mount rear (Exhaust is a problem with standard and drop tanks)
Whiteline front mount rear (UC Style)

K-MAC front mount front

Yeah mate me and my dad both used final drive so have a few of my mates. They are tops man never had a problem, i think from memory they were a little bit more expensive than another company in perth who do them but i have been told they use second hand centre or have done in the past. Pretty much all the top v8s in perth running a 9 inch have gone through final drive. and yes they are in o'connor

I wouldn't think so, as I'm only running a B/W and the stocko sway bar was an extremely tight fit. I ended up using the commode swaybar as I wasn't happy with the lack of clearance around the diff centre.
If you can move it back/down then you might get away with it. Let us know if you do something different as I had to modify the commode one to get it sitting right. I'd be interested to know if something else will fit or custom jobs are available.

Back up lx77 comments. Phil is the guy for any and all diff work in Perth. Couldn't do enough to help with mods to my tailshaft and again when shorteneing the nine inch. Check out the pits at kwinana for either drags or whip ass wednesday, every second car has a final drive rear end. Its all they do and they do it well.

Andy that is a nice looking rear set up, the K-Mac seems to be the go.
I have had a standard rear sway bar on for around 10 years, all i did was elongate the holes in the sway bar. havent had a problem.

Nathan, not really sure what i am gonna do with it, mainly street driven when I'm back in Oz, other than that it will live in a shed - sad really!

You can borrow any of my sway bars for trial fitting if you think you may change your setup.

I would have stuck with the standard rear sway bar if I didn't have adjustable lower control arms.

Oh, ok. :spoton:
How far did you have to move the bar back? About 1/2" - 3/4" at least I'd imagine???

From memory about 10mm.
What i do remember though is that i did it with a file cos i didnt have my die grinder back then and it took a very long time so i only went as far as i had to!
