to make the 700 handle that sort of power you're looking at 7k~

if you're getting it any cheaper then that, you're being lied to about the internals and it will break

i went the th400 because of this and warranted/guaranteed to handle 800hp, at $3k to i think i can handle the 20hp loss

No you don't, you just need to know the right workshops... Not the mainstream ones that charge what they want and give you a flashy sticker to put on your car...

Mix with the right crowd and you get steered in the right direction...

Fair enough. The overdrive part of it all makes sense. Power and semi reliability / economy LOL....

i didnt go to a main stream place either, hes been in the game a very long time and highly respected in w.a

he won't go near a t700 unless you got atleast 7k to spend and he wont put the warranty guarantee on them like he does with the 350/400

its not a workshop war either

but really you should be fine because i dont think you will be getting anywhere near the sort of power to brake a built th700 with the tiny solid

do you have big highways out your way?

i'm expectint 3500 at 110 with 4.11's... think i can handle that its not a daily... is yours going to be a daily?

Dan i did hear alot of that when chasing a builder for mine but in the end all was ok and didnt end up costing the world, I think like you said before the 350 and 400's are apparently fairly easy and reliable to do but the with the right guys or guys that do the 700's have learnt alot and not scared to build them.

Matt, im running a early headed 308 and have touch over 300 at the wheels, t700 which has seen many many gear changes at 6000 - 7000 rpm and around 40 runs down the quarter with no issues whatsoever so far, admittedly with your 355 will have more torque but it should be ok like you said if built right. I havent tried slicks on the strip though :) but again if its main use is the street you should be ok. Im running 4:11's and at a 100kph its around 2700 - 2800 rpm which is not too bad and was ok driving 300km's to toranafest but then again we all like the sound of our own cars hey

3500 is way to high for my liking... Sorry, but I don't want to put my fresh engine under that kind of stress when its not needed.

Yeah Rob, thats the way! I know a few others running the T700 behind 355's and they have had trouble free motoring for many thousand k's... My car will probably see the track once or twice a year at best

The auto builder told me that T700s DO NOT like downshifting, that is what will kill them... As well as heat... So respect the box and keep it cool and you'll go a long way in keeping it together.

I still downshift but not at high speed, mainly when getting ready to stop. Im glad i went for the t700 cause i love the 4:11's to give the lil 308 a wake up

^ Yeah, thats what I meant, not race shifting it into corners and stuff...

I can't wait, I can see I'll be sourcing some 4.11s within the next year to replace my 3.5's

Ok, even if it does 'only' make 300, it'll still sound better than an LS1!

How many 300+hp Torana's you driven/been in?

Yes it is very nice car indeed... Much more than its humble beginnings as a 253 SS that I remember from 5 years ago.

But you are building a 4 door sedan and making it look tops.

Hurry up concrete!

It looks like the whole conversion is going to end up costing about 12k.... It helps having a mate who is building the engine, saved me a fair bit in machining costs and also getting parts at cost price....

It might come in slightly under that, but I doubt it will... There will be lots to spend at the end to get it back driving! I just can't wait to fire it up for the first time and then take it around the block for its first spin!

The 700 also has a lower first so not only do you get the overdrive, you have a better first gear as well...best of both worlds! I couldn't imagine building a car now a days without an overdrive trans, as easy and plentiful as they are and plenty of upgrades out there for them. (look at guys drag racing late model Camaros over here with 4L60E's even..)

If you wanted something as strong as a 400 but still an overdrive, the 4L80E could be something to look at..just need a controller to run it.

But autos are grocery getters....a 6 speed manual is where it's at. :D

After I built a blown LS1/6 speed '69 Camaro (for my mate there) I knew my Torrie was going to have to be an LS1/6 speed too.. they are a nice trans, and can be built to take a heap of power as well.

Yeah, you might finally get to come for a spin! LOL

My other torana is DEFINITELY going to be a manual... That way depending on my mood, I can choose the car I'd like to drive! LOL. I'd like to put an injected motor with a 5 or 6 speed in that! But that is now years off! It can just sit collecting dust at the back of the shed!

The lower first gear in the 700 is good, nice and snappy off the line, but you loose out a bit with the 2nd gear having to make up for that.... Everything has their downfalls I guess.

I did consider the 4L80E, but needing a elec controller and stuff put me off, thats where the 4L60 appealed to me. As you say though, there are so many guys in the states running the TH700's without any problems, with years of R&D having gone into them to make them good boxes to use for Street Machiners.

2Tough runs a T700 i believe and its a consecutive low 11's car. They handle power and perfect for the street. Best of both worlds.

I haven't updated this one for a while...

Been spending up big...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Heads getting done:
Posted Image

They have been pocket ported, reconditioned, fitted with big Isky Springs, etc etc... They are a great bit of work!

The engine is still being pieced together though, its getting done after hours by a mate. All the machine work etc has been done and the rotating assembly is all balanced as well... Just gotta be put together! We were going to do it at my place, but decided to take it back to his work where all the tools and equipment is.

Posted Image

I also dropped the trans off to the builder over the weekend, that should be all ready in the next week or two.

I was also sick and tired of my fuel gauge NEVER working, so i bought a new fuel sender and installed it in my tank.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Also, bought some new Rare Spares lenses... Amazing how much better some new lenses look!

Posted Image

Gave the tank a fresh polish while it was out as well... (Car is still on stands there, so don't tease me for it sitting like a 4WD! LOL)

Posted Image

I started putting a kit through my 750 Holley as well, but when I was pulling apart the base plate to give it a lick of paint, I might have damaged it a bit... So I think I am just going to buy a brand new carby now! The Aussie dollar is going gangbusters, so I think I'm going to get myself a Custom Quick Fuel Carby from the states.

It'll look like this!

Posted Image

Just have to make sure I can afford it first! HAHA! I'll probably order it in the next week or so.

So overall, its slowly getting there! Bloody driving me crazy but I guess thats half the fun!
