Hey again, just looking at your radiator top hose. It's a little hard to see from the angle of the photo but is the bend in the top hose higher than the radiator cap? I have a mud racer that was like that (HQ 253 with a comodore radiator) and i found that if it got an air pocket in the hose it would expand etc and push water out the overflow leading to overheating. It was a real pain in the butt as i had to be very carfull to get the system totally full of coolant. Since it gets an absolute FLOGGING I ened up using a swivel type alloy thermostate housing which had a much flatter angle out of the manifold (it is almost horizontal). Got it on evil bay I think and was cheap. They have nice shiny ones too!!
Heres the beast :)

Hey MRLXSS
Awesome thread and sweet car!!
I havn't read the whole thread but I was wondering whats holding your drop tank up? Is it the straps or is it bolted up through the boot floor?

Yeah mate, just the straps... Same as a normal tank is.

I don't think it is, but I'll have to check... My Radiator does sit kinda low though, so that is something worth double checking... It'd be pretty easy to bring the radiator up a touch. But to date I have no overheating hassles at all! It works great! When I fill the system I have a bit of a method to avoid air bubbles, seems to work pretty well.

Same Deal on the Hill, but for the last bit, use a 2L Coke bottle or something, fill it up and chuck it upside down and make sure it seals up at the bottom. It will slowly bubble out all the air bubbles, as the water level in the coke bottle is higher than the rest of the system.

You can even start the car up if you like, it'll get even more out... Has worked every time for me!

Yeah tried all that too at one stage :) I suspect I had a leak somewhere too that was lowering the pressure in the system allowing more expansion.
Anyway sorry to hijack. Back to your Torana.

I see that you have removed and blocked off the thermostat bypass hose. What have you done to ensure coolant flow through the heads when the thermostat is closed?

Well, results are in!

She pulled 235rwkw (315rwhp), which I was really happy with seeing the carby is straight out the box! The A:F ratios were as flat as anything, you could almost run a ruler over it! They were probably a bit on the lean side though, I think they were about 12.4:1 and I've set my dizzy up at the bottom end of the range suggested, I have about 4 more degrees to play with there if needed.

The engine is also only about 800kms old! So it should loosen up a bit more too!

I want to eventually get closer to 350rwhp, but first time on the rollers I'm really happy with that number!

HAHA! Funny you say that, we had the Guess the HP prize on the day to raise money for the club... With closest to the number winning a $50 Dan Murphy's voucher!

3 People Guessed 235kw! haha... (Probably helped that I was telling everyone it'd probably be between 220-250rwkw... 235 is bang smack in the middle!)

I'm hoping to book it in for the tune shortly, once I get some extra money to spend!

Well done Matt. Good numbers indeed. Well worth spending the money on a proper dyno tune to gain more power. I gained 8 RWHP out of a tune and the car felt so much stronger. You will probably get more.

Yeah Gerry, hopefully!

I was also happy to see the Mechanical Pump held up to the task!

Just out of curiosity, did you run a shootout mode or standard mode? I did both to see the difference. Was only 8RWHP difference with mine and it was also done on a Dynonamics dyno like yours was.

Gerry, I'm pretty sure it was run in Shootout Mode, it normally is! But 'Shootout" isn't printed on the Graph print out, so can't say 100% for sure.

Well.... It's been ages since I've updated this thread... Mainly because I havent really done anything to the car! The motivation hasnt been there... Life has kind of got in the way...

That has finally changed... Spent a few weekends in the shed ironing out a few issues with the car. Still a few things to go, but I'm slowly ticking things off the 'To do list'

First up, new shifter & cable... I was sick and tired of the old Megashifter... I could never get it set up right (Since found that it was the old melted cable that would have been the problem). But I didnt really like the V-gate style and really wanted to get a ratchet style shifter.

So I bought a B&M Stealth Pro Ratchet Shifter from Summit. This time around I spent the extra time mounting it properly so it wouldn't come loose!

I also vacuumed the car for the first time it ages! It scrubs up alright I reckon!

Anyway, here are a few pics!

P1030258.jpg

P1030265.jpg

And these old ducks waddled by to see what was going on...
P1030272.jpg

Next up, got to get the TV cable set up 100% by a professional. Then might be almost ready to get the thing dyno tuned!

Stuff the telle mate, put it on the bottle then roll it up on the dyno!

All these tv channels and nothing to watch what a waste of money spent better on a nitrous kit
