Great new shots Brett, And i dont think i have ever heard my car from the outside and especially getting given a hard time,
may have to try that one day. The closest i came was being a passenger in Grants hatch there in your pics and it felt like someone else was driving my hatch .

Love the build thread mate , you already know what i think of your car :spoton:

If you want, throw me the key's! I'll be more than happy to do some spirited driving in it, so you can hear what it sounds like!

Cheers mello and axistr! SS Hatchback - mate, do yourself a favour, and get someone you trust to take your car for a cruise and follow it. You won't regret it!! We spend all this time and effort building our cars - and it's great driving them, but it's something else again to sit back and watch them on the road, and listening to them.

^^ I remember, i was having a few pre-drinks at my place before going to a party, and suddenly got the urge to be dropped off to the party in style!. I asked dad if he would drive us there... To which he said NO. Then when i said that i want him to take my car he changed his tune and suddenly said YES!!

Anyway, when we rumbled up to the party, I told dad to plant it when he left... LOL. So he didn't hesitate and he nailed it up the road sideways! HAHA! I couldnt believe how sweet my car sounded! I was on an absolute high for the rest of the night!

Oh, and the girls loved it! HAHA!

It's an awesome thing to hear and see your car perform from the outside.. Not something you really ever get to experience normally!

Might be time to let Deb drag race it mate! See if she can cut that magical 11.60 :Headbang2:

HAHA that is GOLD! Classic stuff Matt :)

Tiny, I'm one of the very few guys around who is still faster in his own car than his missus! Deb has dragged it plenty of times, but leaves it in 'Drive' rather than manually shifting up the gears. She's consistently a tenth or two behind me :) I'm safe for now! Although I'd be more than happy for her to beat me if it meant seeing the car go 11.60!

Hi Brett, just been looking through your thread with an eye on the pipes you have used over the years....
So you started off with the CAE TriY 1 5/8 primary pipes, got some 4:1's made (you never mentioned the primary size, I assume 1 3/4" ?) with which the car was fastest. You now use the CAE 1 3/4" primary Tri Y pipes ? Does this sound right ?

What is your mate (Mishka??) with the beast 383 use for pipes ?

I'm still deciding on what to do with mine and trying to get as much background as possible.

Thanks mate for any info you can help me out with........ Andrew

Oh also, are you using those wimpy downturn collector extensions when you race with the current set up ? If so make up another pipe to give you a total collector length of about 18" and see how that goes !!

G'day Andrew! Ok, here goes, especially for you mate. Hopefully it's of use to you:

System #1
CAE Tri-Y's (CH12's) : yes, the 1-5/8" primary versions, with tiny 2" ?? collectors, I've forgotten.
Running a twin 2-1/4" system with twin Redback mufflers
Chassis dyno the car usually made around 220rwkW.
This was early on in my drag racing days, I still ran an 11.99 with this setup, with 3.5 diff gears.

System #2
Custom made 4-into-1's : 1-7/8" primaries, 3" collectors
Running a twin 3" system with twin straight-through mufflers
Chassis dyno made highest power ever at 245rwkW.
This is the system I had when I ran my 11.77's, & still with the old hydraulic baby cam too, but 3.7 gears. It was an animal exhaust! Sounded insane.

System #3 (Current)
Custom made Tri-Y's : 1-3/4" primaries, 2" secondaries, 2-1/2" collectors
Running a twin 2-1/2" system with twin Supercat mufflers (expansion chamber style)
Chassis dyno produced around 235rwkW
Back to running 11.9's so far, Note: this is also when I changed to the bigger solid cam and forged pistons when the engine was freshened. Either the extractors are robbing me of power, or the cam is badly matched to the rest of my combo (I suspect both are contributing). After the rebuild I expected huge improvements, but went back to where I was earlier.

We are only talking tenths here, and very small amounts of dyno power, but yes, there are some definite performance edges it seems with those 4-into-1's.

PS. My mate (Mischa) is running 4-into-1's fairly similar to the ones I had (System2 above). I can't remember his exact sizes, but they are very similar). Actually went for a ride in his SLR earlier tonight, it feels crazy. They had it on the dyno this afternoon and have already hit 300rwkW still on a safe tune. Go the 383 Chevs! Send him a PM if you want to discuss his setup (LXV8 on these forums).

Oh yeah - lastly, no I don't race with my downturn 'dump' pipes off the extractors - they are what I run on the street (they dump at the diff after the mufflers). I have run open pipes once at Heathcote, but it made no difference to my E.T. It was actually slower off the line and felt worse, so since then I've always raced with the system on. I will have to give your collector extension idea a go next time, thanks for the advice.

Stay tuned for extractor photos....

Hi Brett, can't thank you enough for the info and numerous pics !

I know my Hurricane pipes are holding me back and I need to make something up, just not 100% sure what layout and pipe size to go with.

I will PM your mate, the more feedback I can get from different users the better equipped I will be to make the right decision.

Thanks again for taking the time to upload all those pics !!!

Cheers torriechick! Went for a nice long cruise today up to Maroondah Dam, it was fantastic. The car has been running like crap recently, so yesterday I gave it a good tune-up (adjusted the rockers, whacked fresh plugs in it etc), and it felt awesome today. Lots of long winding roads, it was running fresh and crisp. Didn't want to stop driving! LOL.

Couple of happy snaps from yesterday with Mish:

Gotta love two 383 Chev Torries cruising side by side, making plenty of noise!

Hey Struggler, I am currently making 2 sets of pipes to go into hatchbacks with LS1's at Craigs, very similar layout to a chev, how they go past the steering and starter. Both are 1" an 3/4 x 4 into 1's. come over and have a look.
