Widest Rim for LX with R31 diff

Just in the process of ordering some showwheels streeter wheels for my unflared LX hatch.
To my dissappointment it looks like a cannot run a 8inch wheel on the rear with the offsets/backspacing they offer.
My measurement from the mounting face to the lip is 105mm, they only offer the 17x8 with a backspacing of 4.75" which means the distance from the mounting face to the outer lip of the guard is 108mm.
So it looks like im going to have to run with 17x7's all round .
Whats the widest rubber I can fit on a 17x7??
Any other opinions?
What wheels have other people fitted that have done the skyline R31 diff conversion?

You could quite happily run 225s or maybe 235s on a 7" wheel.

I still have the backing plates, but they only substitute like 2mm at the most.
I will just go the 7inch ones. Thats quite good if I can fit 235's thats what I was after in the first place.
Thanks mate.

mm? That is very big, might be a problemBut the overall diameter is 668

Yeah That overall diameter could be a problem with the tyre.

Its cast iron and not exactly the best quality
And you'd have to do it every time you need to change them
Do the wheels and you only have to do it once...and they will be a better grade of alloy thats better machined
Of course... get a pro to look at this first

I have Toyo T1R 235/40/17 fitted on an 8" rim, the tyre overhangs the rim by 2-3 mm. There is a 35 mm gap between the tyre and the outside of the wheel arch. When the car is on the bump stops the tyre is within a few mm of the inner guard. It would appear the lip is about 20 mm wide which means you would need to be around 15 mm inside the lip to avoid tyre rub.
Based on your measurements you would need to remove 5 mm (108-105+2) to stop the tyre touching the lip and 20 mm to stop the tyre from touching the inner guard. If you need to have the car engineered with the rims then you may get knocked back for insufficient tyre clearance. You should also keep in mind the the diff will move at least 5 mm for side to side during moderate cornering. You should check that the diff is not sitting off centre when you take your measurements.
The 17x7 4.5 backspace with a 225/45/17 (OD 633 mm) may be the easiest solution.
There may be enough spline on the factory axles for you to be able to trim 20 mm of the end of each axle and shorten the housing.

10mm maybe, definitely not 20mmThere may be enough spline on the factory axles for you to be able to trim 20 mm of the end of each axle and shorten the housing.

Im not keen on stuffing around with the axels.
And I don't think they would be able to machine off around 20mm lol.
Tony from showwheels has suggested I fit the 17x7 with a 4.25" backspace which means the distance from the wheels mounting face and outer lip is 95mm.
So from ls2lxhatch's comments this 10mm clearance would not be enough?
If so the 17x7 with 4.5" BS will be the only option. This gives 88mm from wheel mounting face to outer lip. And without tyre 17mm clearance.

Specifications - Rims, Tyres And Track
I would also check the clearance between the shock and the tyre with both rims. There should be plenty of room but it is still worth checking.

Distance is 145mm. With the 4.5" BS the distance from the mounting face of the wheel to the inner lip is 114mm. So I have 30mm to play with here and 17mm on the outer lip.
As for the track im not too sure. The track would be more in my case.

The wheels here are commodore 17's with 235/45 rubber.

I had to move my shockies in a little to fit my 17"x8" showwheels, and roll the guard lip, but they are nowhere near that close to the rail, and my diff is 20mm narrower than standard.
Your diff could be a lot narrower than most, maybe?

The shock in the car above has been moved inboard about 40 mm at the base as part of the BW diff conversion. This will result in a small improvement in the clearance at the top a the shock.
