Your ute is looking really good. I like the commodore wheels.

As for lowering blocks, save your money. Just pull the centre bolt out of the spring pack, take the smallest or second smallest leaf from the bottom, flip it over and stick it on top. Then put the centre bolt back in. All done. And free : )

My old HZ ran 18 inch commodore wheels. I bought a set of 30mm thick hub adaptors that bolted to the HZ hubs with imperial PCD, then had another set of studs coming out of the adaptor with metric PCD. They were only $200 a set and made the choice of wheels endless. Just a thought.
You can see them in behind the wheels.

Nothing unsafe about them. Had trouble with them have you? Didn't think so.

You do bring up a point about legality though. I went through a machinery blitz in Qld and they said no dramas, but I have heard of other states frowning on them.

Plus, Convo Pros don't need them....hint hint : )

isnt flipping springs a pain in the arse though? I thought you had to "bend" them to fit the sahpe of the other springs etc etc?

This leaf spring thing is new to me!

Josh, Theres a little metal tie on point just behind the rear glass, first thing I thought when we got the ute and saw it was "lead holder!"

So she will be secured (I personally think she would try and jump into other cars carrying dogs if we didnt tie her on!)

Thanks for all the comments! Im getting excited about it again now, I lost a shitload of enthusiasm in the last few months, but suprisingly have got it all back again.

Hi. All that needs to be done to lower a leafspring rear end is put the car on stands under the chassis, not the diff. Unbolt the U bolts so the housing is free to move. Jack up one side of the diff, undo the centre bolt from the leaf pack. The smallest or second smallest (some leaf packs have teeny weeny bottom leaves) leaf will usually do the trick. Turn that leaf over 180 degrees and sit it on top of the main leaf that bolts to the car. Grab a long screw driver and poke it through the centre bolt hole to keep all the springs lines up, and use a clamp to pull the springs back together. Once together, put the centre bolt back in. I've done this to a fair few fords and they've turned out well. Qld Transport isn't a big fan of lowering blocks, but they've never complained about doing this.

Hope that helps.

Rodomo still brings a good point though, check for legalities in your state.

Sorry for interrupting your thread. Keep up the good work on the ute.

You arent interupting dude!

Thats what the forums are about, sharing ideas and explaining things. (and often times teasing, posting useless crap etc)

The more ideas I have floating around my head, the better!

Adapters not spacers, there is no reason why they would be less safe, just like having a wheel that bolts together in two sections with studs & nuts holding the two sections together, and then bolting that onto the original equipment.

Go GTS wheels anyway though! :P

Chris, when i was searching for a centre cap for my GTS rims, there were a couple of forumers here that had spare sets of rims.
They wont be hard to find. [if you decide to go that way].

Looking good!

In my opinion (for what its worth) its the extra risk involved with the additional parts in the chain thats the problem. You have two sets of wheel nuts to be correctly torqued up at each wheel, I'm sure there must be issues with differing metals in the adapters if any significant heat is involved too.

Anyway the ute is looking good, not far off now!

I do, and it was the reason for my comment.
At 1.19am though it wasn't time for me to "search" it.
Dirtbag, you are correct, I haven't had a problem with them, but that ^^^ thread was enough for me to know never to use them unless on a static show car.

Fair call, I'll be honest they've never really taken my fancy either :P

I've just never had a problem with them conceptually

Wow, what a sweet arguement. : ) Anyway, I think majority votes are in order. GTS rims seems to be on top of the pile, and rightly so. So now we just need to force that decision onto Karlie : )

I think the GTS wheels would look great too (they go with the white), 14 or 15 inch wheels would suit it much better than bigger diameter both style-wise and in practicality

Convos with spinners! what a combo! haha.

If money was no object, it would be on a set of polished FR17s.... but the bank balance says there isnt enought to finish the car at the moment, let alone spending 2k on wheels! haha.

Im still holding out hope of this new job which will effectively double my current wage. (every cross your fingers for me!)

I might get stuck into the interior this weekend.

Need to finish pulling the old dash out and wire up the GTS dash and swap all the black stuff over (no more brown! hooray!)

Got some work done on the weekend-

swapped the dash cluster and crashpad over-
Posted Image

Posted Image

Made some temporary plastic windows to keep the weather out- (not progress, but thats all these photos really show! haha)

Posted Image

Posted Image

Cleaned up and painted the facia-
Posted Image

And had Karlies dad tint the windows before I get around to putting them in-

Posted Image

fair bit darker then "legal" but will look schmik (had the back window done too)

Need to finish wiring up some things and replacing the water temp nd oil pressure senders.

Going to rares this week to buy all the fiddly bits to get the interior to "lock up" stage.

Need some weather strips and clips for the doors so I can install the windows, then I will get the windscreen guy out to put the front and rear screens in (buying new front)

not a bad driveway-

Heading out to Rare spares at Strathfield tonight. (open till 7, gotta love a mans version of late night shopping!)

going to see if I can grab everything I need (rubbers etc) in one go.

Its always good to head out for a perve anyway, something interesting is always on display.

Also going to Revolution racegear at parramatta to have a squiz at bits for the (still in the project stage) torana race car.

did some shopping last night.

Bought a new wheel for the Racecar, revolution brand suede wheel, 15inch (I think that was the size we ended up with, im not 100%)

Also bought a couple blocks of foam to throw in the fuel tank and some roll cage padding.

Then it was off to Rares-

Posted Image

Bought full bailey channels for both doors, outside weather strips and 2 new front indicators (others are a bit dodgy)

Aswell as a front and rear set of that chrome pinchweld type stuff for the front/rear windows on the racecar :)

So I will be putting the doors together on the car ove the weekend, which means I am one step closer to being able to fit some carpet/stereo etc etc.

Ordering my lowering blocks today, spoke to my old man about flipping leaf springs, he said he had fond memories of riding round in one of his old HQs with flipped springs and the ride being teeth chatteringly firm! haha.

He also mentioned flipping springs in one of his cortinas? because he couldnt afford upgraded leafs, so that was their way of making the ride harder (his first racecar was a MK1 cortina)

So I'll start with the blocks and see how I go.

oooh! one more thing, going to see Stokesy (our trimmer) about throwing a hoodlining in really soon. Then I can get some windows in the sucker!

It costs bugger all to get leaf springs altered if need be, I had the ones for my old ute reset about an inch lower with an extra leaf for some added load carrying capacity, worked out great

Im looking at 3 inch lowering blocks at the moment, the arse is just waaaay too high.

Im getting excited now, its going to be a nice looking thing, the white is VERY bright (glacier white from the LJ range) and suits the ute really well.

Dunno what your rules are but we're only allowed 50mm (roughly 2 inch) maximum lowering blocks here, might pay to check.

Its always good putting the shiny new pieces back on, especially with a shiny new paint job!

Hello again : )

In Qld at least you're not allowed to have the leafspring of lower plate/shock mount lower than the lowest part of your wheel rim. There's some EHs getting around here with what look like 3 or 4 inch blocks in the back and the springs are only about 2 inches off the road with the 13 inch wheels. Looks ridiculous. I still recommend flipping a leaf over. Plus it's free : )

Ute is looking really good. How's the saving going for those convos with spinner hubcaps? :badabing:
