My car has been engineered, but Canberra, and I think its a bit strickter here. The seats had to be passed, diff, gearbox all had to be on the certificate. When you change any think with an ADR, structural or it has to be strong enough to handle additional power it needs to be engineered, or your asking for trouble.

i'd spend the money get it engineered it'll save a lot of head aches later on,
but once the car is engineered you must carry a copy of the report with the car at all times.i hear it's a big fine and a defect for not having it.

Simply mechanics do not have knowlegde nor qualification to ensure your vehicle is safe when it has been modified.
They do not design only repair.

If I understand this correctly then a mechanic with roadworthy authority would not legally be able to issue a pink slip to a modified vehicle, even with an engineers certificate?

Dont guess. Ring the RTA. Be pleasant, be honest and be anonymous.... (appologies, evening paranoia setting in).

Out Liverpool way I would get an engineers cert. just for the cops sake. Lots of boys in blue out there and they love throwing a defect on anything they can. Drop tank is the major concern

^^^^^ I agree the boys in Blue in the western Sydney region seem to think they are RTA inspectors

Dont stuff around Tony!

Give these guys a call ( about half way down the page - * Vehicle technical enquiries including Authorised Inspection Stations 1300 137 302)

From this website: http://www.rta.nsw.g...acts/index.html

As mentioned above, be polite and ask them anything you need to know. They are actually quite knowledgeable people!
Every time i have spoken with them they have been *EXTREMELY* Helpful, Infact the person i spoke with regarding bonnet scoops was kind enough to copy and post out to be the relevant guidelines from the code!! What a legend!

Personally, I would get an engineering certificate *ESPECIALLY* for insurance purposes.
I think if you read "the fine print" all modifications will have be to approved by a qualified engineer.

Good luck with it mate!

Tiny has a good point there, do it for insurance reasons, on the side of vehicle and health damage for your self and others. Theres no shortage of trigger finger people wanting to sue someone.
As for RTA help, um I strongly disagree, getting any straight up info from the RTA is difficult and inconsistent. But thats not the point, go for the engineer certificate mate.

Hi all, it seems the rta must be working overtime, my lh torana has had a 9inch diff and a 120litre droptank for the past 10years or so, have had a blueslip about 3 years ago with both fitted, no probs, been thru rta defect station with both, no probs, diff is minispooled, still didnt get done(lucky maybe). however car has been unregoed for 6 months now while i raced it, now wish to cruise on the streets again, both the diff and droptank wont be passed, (tried 3 or 4 places) so now the question comes up, how much to engineer 9inch? can a 120litre strap style droptank be engineered? i know for a fact its too big in regards to point of departure rule, so who has what size droptank engineered? i have no probs with getting it cut down to 80litres if need be.
any feedback much appreciated, dazza.

Dazza, can't answer your question but be careful who you use for your engineer certs. I have a friend who had a highly modified commodore engineered, only to find out the later that the guy was under investigation by the RTA, therefore they wouldn't except his certificate. This cost him a lot of money and a whole lot of B#llshit !

Modifications are :9 inch , supra 5 speed, 14" hotwires, recaro style seats

It used to be that only the 9" and box would need engineering, but now you'll need the seats done too.
In 05 I needed the engine change done but not the seats - moved to QLD and it was the other way around, go figure.

Wheels are owner certified unless outside the limits.

What brakes? If they are the FuD ones from the 9" they're okay, if they are HQ etc they'll need to be on the report too.......
Front brakes?

As far as legality, rego and insurance - the car shouldn't have gotten rego without a report (unless the vehicle was modified while registered, then the RTA/RMS should have been advised, and given a report). In the event of an accident, RTA/RMS can cancel the rego whether mods contributed or not, if the vehicle shouldn't have held rego due to unprovided paperwork. Insurance companies will not cover unregistered vehicles (unless for specific policies) so then no payout and multiple fines......

Grant..

I have been told new Engineering laws are coming in 2012

Certified engineers will have to warrant their work just like builders. expect prices to go up

There is a meeting in Feb at Eastern creek raceway

Hey Tony , will existing reports still be valid or do they have to go through the checks again?

Sorry been a bit lazy and pretty busy lately.

After watching the news the other night i would strongly suggest you do it the wright way as the cops down there are haveing a feild day with cars and modifacations and getting writers cramps doing so.
They pull you up for a breath test and drag you off to a inspection station.
And they don't care what sort of car it is if it looks good then your done.
Wont be long before someone runs over a cop and takes off as he or she wont want to stop.
I call it entrapment.

NSW rules have changed but they want to change them again, hence the rally at Eastern Creek to protest/promote a sane opinion.

Read the article in the current SM Mag - in the newsagent if you have to - and ge to to the rally if you are in Sydney........

Just wondering if anyone knows what an engineer's report costs in NSW.

I've been quoted $1,500 by a mechanic to have one done.

That's not too bad. The guy I had in Adelaide, very well know and the RTA took his word as gospel and is a bit of a genius (PM me for his name/details if anyone is interested) ended up costing me about $3K...... Seems pretty steep but that's with him writing a 12 page report, hiring an airstrip, spending a day on braking and lane change tests and analyzing all the data then sending me through the inspection station (what a load of bullshit that was!). I had a hell of a lot of modifications on the car, but still, wish I had a quote for $1500.
