Hey All,

I have a 304 Injected motor in an LX Torana and the starter motor is not sitting flush with bell housing.

I have the VR/VS small starter motor fitted to it.

I had removed the starter motor to fit some headers on and now its not going back in. I even jacked the motor up from its mounts and tried fitting it to the starter so nothing is in the way and the starter still wont sit flush. Can it be damaged?

The starter motor goes in all way but when you tighten up the bolts, the starter moves back and leaves a gap between the housing.

When I lowered the motor back down, I noticed the solenoid is hitting the bottom frame.

Any help would be great!

What else did you change or unbolt during the extractor install?

Where is the inspection cover?

During the extractor install, I had taken off the starter motor and the engine mount bolt, cause I lifted the motor to one side so I can fit the headers on. No inspection cover came with the motor.
When I bought the motor and gear box, I could have sworn that the starter motor was sitting flush to the housing.

When you lifted the engine the mount on the other side may have slid down on the k-frame which would move the engine over possibly causing the starter motor to hit the k-frame. Check the engine mounts are evenly spaced on the k-frame.

I am not familiar with the gearbox you have however I would expect some sort of gap between the starter and the housing for the inspection cover plate.

I have a T5 Manual transmission fitted to it. However is the solenoid suppose to be hitting the bottom of the K frame? Because I have read many articles on this forum saying that the VR/VS starter motor will fit. Should there be a gap for the inspection cover? If so that means the problem is the solenoid hitting the bottom of the K frame. The engine mounts are perfectly spaced because the bolts are in there.

What sort of engine mounts are you using?
I just installed one of the small starter motors into my torrie yesterday and it fit no problems (304 V8). And it was flush. Maybe the wrong starter???

Does the ring gear still engage correctly?

Don't like the look of that hitting the chassis.

Homer, where did you get you starter from and how much? Im using HQ engine mounts and plates.

The funny thing is that the starter motor was already in the motor and I had removed it to fit the headers. I didnt pay much attention but I dont think the solenoid was hitting the side of the K frame originally. I raised the motor back up again so the solenoid does not hit the K frame and tried fitting the starter motor. It fits but the problem is when you tighten both bolts, it moves back a couple mils creating a gap between the starter and the bell housing. The problem I think might be with the starter. I dont get it AH!

Its hard to see, but the ring gear looks like its engaged, I cant test it. I have not wired it up yet.

Thanks Rory, the starter that I have is the original one for that motor. Its a VR model.

Its weird because it was fitted to that motor and I pulled it off to fit the headers.

However, I will take your advice and grab one with a smaller body.

I went out and took a couple of pics for you.
The first pic is taken from under the car and the second pic is looking from the top of the engine throught the extractors.

The third pic is what it is attached to.

Some of the VN/VRs for some reason copped the big body starters..you need the smaller one.
