ok back to the XU-1,

for those that don,t know,my good friend UFO XU1 gave me the best present at torana fest, bathurst XU-1 extractors as my car has been missing them.

anyways thought i better have a bit of a go today and have a look at what has happened,

these are the pipes dummy fitted i have clearance probems because of the modified front end,if anyone has pictures of how this is supose to look, please help,i need to remove spacers and get factory bolts.

noticed white paint markings on crank to match doweled fly wheel, aparently from factory, they marked crank to match doweled lightened fly wheel.

Great pics Craig,If you want I'll PM you the length of my bolts but again don't know if they would be different because of your being a Bathurst 150 and mines not.Its interesting to see your date code on the block, its inprinted rather then raised if you know what I mean.Maybe thats another 150 block thing but who knows? :dontknow:

hi daneo,

i,d think the bolts would be the same, probably common i,d think,

i really hope someone one day will recognise the mods to this car,and i can find previous owners.

tell you what, they are a prick of a thing to get a motor out of,think i,ll put back in as a short motor, can see why people roll out front suspension with engine attached

i,m pritty sure its raised in the code

i,m really happy with the condition of it,like new.

Yeah I reckon there always better to pull them out with the front end attached, that way theres minimal chances of scratching anything.
I'm just about to go out to my domain so I'll text you the length of my bolts soon.
cheers Dane

Shuffle the engine across in the cradle mate. Loosen your lower mount bolts and push the passenger one down and slide the driver side up. Should give you the clearance you need. Having removed and refitted a lot of them I'm a bit shocked you find it difficult to remove the engine and trans complete. I always thought they were pretty easy. :dontknow: You'll hate me for this but one of the cars I had in my 20's had a set of pipes on it exactly like those..... I cut them up to fit the engine into something else.... They had no brand on them and I thought they were just cheap junk. :Headbang2:

that looks like the gearbox date code
graig when you put eng in leave chain block on
then loosen eng mount bolt's all of them then do them up tell you got some clearance
my xu1 has about 2 or 3 mm at the same spot as yours

thanks for all the help.

biggest hassel getting it out,is that the engine doesn,t come forward much, basicly has to go straight up,then heater box is a issue,2nd time round is always easy.

i haven,t removed this motor since 1990,and refit about 1993,i,m gunna stick it back with no head, that should be easy.

what do you guy,s think of me using the WADE XJ 391 cam?

and TorYoda,i,ve ditched many a thing i regret now.

hi vin

Craig,
Big Cam is very nice and true to the engine and car.
But has poor idle, coughs and stalls, power comes in high in rev's, was IMO designed specifically for Bathurst track use.
If your main intention is to drive the car on the road then use a cam more suited to that , can still have a great note, and will have better manners.

i have the 391 cam in my 73 bath it idle very good at 900-1000 r.p.m,
put a new one in about 4 years ago pulls good in top gear and good power at 4300 r.p.m
might jerk at roundabouts you just put your foot on the clutch or change gears,
my distributor is set to xu1 spec page 159 in fiv antoniou book, but there might be better cams these days,
so iam happy with my cam and sounds good with the extractor's

thanks grumpy 026,understand where your coming from.
the cam in the car now is exactly what you say,but i,m over it,i live in the country,no traffic lights here or roundabouts either,so i,m going with vin no offence, but if vin says his is good i,m with you bud, cammy and rev the piss out of it.

i,m excited to hear it how it should sound, ordered all the parts today, wade XJ 391 camshaft, crow springs, retainers, valve locks, high performance anti pump up lifters.

now wait

hi dane,

the paint came from repco, and the photo didn,t show the colour difference very well they look the same, the flash frocked the pic,but the sump is definatly darker than the chevy orange engine,i think i,m gunna use it as my car is nowhere near factory oridginal anyways.

hi vin,

the cam that was in it was after market, wasn,t factory,i think it may of had a turbo and the cam was for that, maybe.

Craig,
many years ago when I had my 27F3 cylinder head serviced I asked the dude not to repaint the head after it was put in a chemical bath .

At the back of the head was XU that had been hand painted in white paint .

I asked the dude if he had done it - he said no , it was done before the head had engine enamel applied to it .

That was some tough paint to resist his chemical bath when all the engine enamel was completely removed .

Hi Craig,

The back of my flywheel has that same black stamp, but a 72 model,
and when i had my head chemicaly cleaned,i found xu1 in a,
thick blueish paint, the other paint came off except that.
Good to see another car with its original markings.

Cheers John.
