Just wondering what would be a better finish for the roll cage I will one day take off the shed wall and put into the car?

Powder coat, or polished?
If powdercoat, black or silver?

Also, anyhone have any up-to-date info on legalities of a rollcage? Was told a while a go that it was OK as long as you don't install the bar across the door....

I think powder coat will keep its shine alot better as alu dulls a bit.

I would personally trim it in the same fabrics as the interior
Since you have to have padded areas around your bean anyway

I'm trying to find an example for you of a car I have seen

I reckon satin black/trimmed for the cage Jason :)

powder coating might be a bit of a pain in the bum, once its chipped you can touch it up etc, might be a pain around the bolt holes and stuff. (not to mention getting in and out, putting it in and out etc)

Just off topic slightly,

Do you run a Taxi bar Lee?

I was thinking the other night about the cage for the LJ and had a few things that came to mind.

Rear bars (to parcel shelf) will have to be as close to roof/c pillar as possible (and even then im not sure its legally still a 5 seater?

Bolt in intrusion bars are fine (aslong as not fitted for the street)

But the Taxi bar had me stumped, It will definitely limit the ability of rear passengers to get in (and out) in an emergency situation, so it might have to be regoed as a two seater?

I think the legalities are different from state to state.
I have my rear bars set up between the rearseat passengers heads. Not along the doortops.
This was acceptable to the certifing engineer.

As for color, it doesnt really matter.
In Qld, it is a requirement that all exposed metal, which may come in contact with a passengers head during a collision, MUST be padded.
So basically, that's everything from the doortops up.

So you will have no dramas getting that regoed as a 5 seater col?

Can you get a 2 door (LC/LJ here) registered with a taxi bar?

They dont allow the intrusion bars based on it stopping you from entering/exiting the car in a hurry, taxi bar would definitely f*ck up the back seat passengers exit.

Im not heaps worried as the car wont have a backseat 90% of the time and will be on club rego, but it would be nice to throw the back seat in every now and then and take 4 people in it.

For some reason I never thought of trimming it!!... and I LIKE the idea!
Helps it blend into the interior (I prefer understated to 'in yer face'), better for maintenance (re-polishing of the al had me worried), AND I can do it myself!

Thanks guys, I KNEW you were all good for something!! ;-)

Mine has a half cage, I have trimmed it in the same fabric as the hoodlining. Most people have to look twice to realise it has a cage.

If you do polished aluminium and the bars are visable in the back window you will get pulled over lots. Mine seemed to be a magnet for that when it had the Alloy cage in it.

Correct Chris.
It was certified by a consulting engineer & went through rego with no issues. [ i had it installed in 'black']

You can't use alloy or aluminium for competition any more. Check you CAMS manual if you want to use it for motorsport. Need to use seemless steel tube or chrome-moly. Only two suppliers in Aus.

Thanks for pointing that out Yella.... Just had a browse of the CAMS manual, and you are right - however I only run in Speed events, and am not required to have a cage at all, so part 9 of schedule J 'non complying safety cages' would apply, and the Alloy cage (Ex 82911 race car cage) should be OK.
Still not sure on the road legality for NSW though.....?

Yup, check with your sporting club as to their requirements. If you run it as a road registered car it won't have to comply. If not registered, I'm not sure, but all may have to be CAMS complying. Only way you can run these days with alloy is if the car was CAMS complianced with it in prior to the rule change, or an engineers certificate/calcs.

Road registration??? Not sure. NSW has rally car registration which may be your best bet, but with that you can only drive too and from CAMS sanctioned events.

Mmmm, can you see why people are looking at alternatives to CAMS?

Still waiting to see if they are going to cancel my "Officials" license cause I didn't fill in their forms!!! How ludicrous.
