the rego guy says there is play in the rack on the left side. not sure wat side that means but ill ask him, he said something about drilling out a pin and tightening a bush or something then re-pinning it? im lost and i have a month to do it. the book i have is useless for this.

Happy to help out here, having had lots of experience steering.

The issues with the bushes and pins and gears can be quite complex and should really be considered over a long cold one.

Either way, as you are in a hurry, i'll break it down to the shortest possible assistance.

The left side,

Is opposite the right side.

Go to it, best of luck.

thanks very much for that donut of information. i had deduced that left was left in that my missus says my bell end points a little that way so after carefull measurement i found wat i was looking for. however if i was to, say, give u a brown eye for bein a twat said bell end would point in the other direction! (ass bein on the back of me) hence my dilemma of right and left but im quite happy to give you a big right and left :thebird:

in all seriousness if i cant fix this im selling it.

Quicker to get a rack from the wreckers and chuck it in...no big drama..LC or LH?..If LH get the UC one.The one beauty of QLD...When I drove over the border in 81 I kissed goodbye yearly roadworthy certificates...

Early LH has something inside it that can't be fixed
SO maybe a different rack is an option

Having said that... rego said Tinkers car had a rack issue
They didn't want to pass it till I got a letter from Holden stating the rack was within tolerance
This was direct from the head rego tech officer himself (used to be a friend of mine before he retired)

I took it to another rego station and got it passed no dramas
And thats after they jacked it up and shook the wheels off it

Mackay does a rebuild kit for the racks but it doesn't come with the LHS thingy

SO... if they won't pass it... get another rack

Sounds like they're complaining about play in the left inner tie rod joint. It would be quicker and easier to replace, probably cheaper too, no big deal

^ Good point. Get someone to wiggle the wheel while you watch the tie rod and steering rack end to see where the play is. Failing that take it to a suspension place and ask them what needs to be placed.

just slide the rack boot back ,you will see pin between the rack end and the lock nut drill pin out, undo rack end, there should be spring and i think a plastic or steel cup ,if cup looks ok tighten rack end until play is gone , tighten lock nut, drill new hole for lock pin ,fit pin and centre punch sides of pin so as it can not come out

Hold one wheel....very lightly move the steering wheel...both wheels should move together...you will feel any play.

Yes Its all easier to do while the rack is out because usually the pin you have to drill out isnt visible from the front and is probably facing towards the K-frame or oil pump.

Having said that the left side can be worn 2 ways,

1. where the steering rod moves left and right without the pinion or rack moving(and would be similar to the effects of a worn tie rod gives) which requires the drilling out on the pin, and retightening to specs with a new hole drilled for the locking pin (assuming the ball end or the nylon cup behind it isnt worn out).

2.where the shaft moves up and down in the housing which means its the main inner bush and will require removal of the rack bar from the housing to refit a new one. Also requires removal of steering rod like first case.

Which situation is yours? and do you have LH or LX rack?

its lh i have no idea what the prob is he just said something like that post a few back up this page. he just said its got play in it. i think the UC rack is the way to go does rarespares do the bushes? they are pretty worn out. im hopin just to register it for a few months and hopefully finish the mazda but its getting tight for time and the torry is at the top of the sale list.

If you get a UC rack you don't need mounting bushes as they are solid mounted, I believe you need the different bolts though

Silly me,

Yes could also have ment the rack mount bush is worn too, but as he mentioned something about drilling out a pin I assumed it was the internals of the rack.
