The car looks great Chris, almost too good to drive it in anger.
On second thought, nah stuff it, give it hell.

If we were going door to door racing, then I doubt it would have turned out so nice.
but for hillclimbs etc it shouldnt (fingers crossed) see many incidents (except when my wants exceed my skill!)

We blew a hydro clutch line on the next run so couldnt continue.
Need to get some different emulsion tubes and a selection of air bleeds.
Barely got into touching the timing, so should break 200 easily.
The torque curve is very flat, and even at 6200 is barely tappering off.
Not a bad figure for a throw together!
It sounds excellent on full song!

Had an awesome surprise today!
Ray organised for us to head down to wakefield park for a track day as a bit of a surprise for me, mum and Karlie helped out and wouldnt let me know what we were doing till 5am thismoring.
Had ALOT of dramas....
First off our tow car for the day (mums VX SS) had dramas about 15 minutes from home, so had to turn around and head back, rang my brother and got him to bring my dads ute round to our joint (closer to the freeway)
so we swapped the trailer over, swapped all the gear over and hopped in the ute and my VT (4 of us in total, so couldnt go in just the ute, my VT wont tow the trailer with a car real well)
Off we went....
Arrived lateish at wakefield, lots of cars there (expected for a weekend)
Got grouped with the "tin top race cars" which was full of dickheads racing for sheep stations....
Ray took it out for the first session to see if everything way ok, VY V8 supercar blew a diff on the mainstraight, ending the session after about 4 laps, but that was enough to blow the oil pressure sender out and leave a trail of oil from the final turn, into the pits..... great!
So after noone had any degreaser, we somehow managed to clean up the engine bay and fix the sended.
Ray headed out again in the next session, stripped the dizzy gear, and the balancer slipped badly
Came back in after 4 laps again (stalled into the pit lane)
Fixed that, missed the session, so I headed out in the second last session for the day, not wanting to rev it over 5 grand due to the balancer drama,
Had a bit of a moment on turn 9 (after the hairpin) and ended up in the weeds, got back on ok, was pretty hairy with aussie racing cars and other things overtaking you, undertaking you etc etc all on corners and under brakes, forcing me wide or to brake dramatically. basically stuff they shouldnt be doing.
Got about 6 laps in, then blew a hydro clutch line.....hooray....
Loaded it all up again and headed home at about 3.50, got about an hour down the road and had a trailer tyre delaminate, rip the gaurd on the trailer up, and send a half foot bit of flat bar shooting towards my windscreen in the VT behind! missed by about 10cm off the A pillar.
All in all a good day, albeit eventful, probably should have stayed home when the first thing went wrong!
No lap times for obvious reasons, but keen to go back in a month or two.

It certainly has some stick though, frys the advans easily.
Handles pretty good, bit oversteery at times, brakes well with the new hawk pads in the front.
Cant wait for next time

Has a massive flat spot coming out of some of the harder corners, costing me/us a heap of time.
Lap times started off around 1.26 and I ended up with a PB of 1.20 odd by the afternoon still fighting to get it out of turn 2, the internal fishhook and the final turn onto the straight (was almost at the start of the pit wall before it would come clean and go.... so a good 5 seconds there)
I'm soooooo freaking keen to get back there and better that time. At this stage, after changing fuel pressures and mucking about with fuel levels in the tank on the day, I believe its the float levels in the dellortos causing issues under hard cornering.
Had a couple offs for the day, really need to get a go pro for next time
Also had a run in with a dickhead in a HQ that obviously missed the idea of the day and thought we were door to door racing for sheep stations.... poked it down between me and the pit wall halfway out of the final turn (blocking my line)
I came about 10cm from having him in my passengers door and it flipped me into a big fishtail....
Thought better of going and giving him what for after the session had ended, I would have been the one in trouble then.
BUT it was funny seeing him try to run away after he had passed me, he was dropping wheels in the dirt, sliding around corners etc, all the while, even with flatspots, I was sticking a fixed distance from his bum! haha,
anyway, great day, few small issues (only its second time at the track and the FIRST proper sessions)
Want to head back sometime in april now!

Was it a 'speed of the streets' day?
I was at Wakefield on Tuesday doing that V8 Race thing. 12 laps in a Falcon.
The cars arent much more than a painted up stocky with better brakes and old slicks but lots of fun and now I am keen to get my XU1 on the track.
Be good to go together with you guys.

Another forum I moderate on is organising a private hire day, 30 or so cars, $200 a car.
Will let you know more details as I get em.
Supposedly these dellortos can be sensitive with float lwvels and cornering? Something for us to chase!
also, changed the wheels back to the show wheels today, thought id check the shocks.... Turns out we never changedthe settings back afyer thedrag day... So everything was set jp soft (konis)
So look out next time!

Do you have a lap time goal for the near future?
#97
Posted 02 April 2012 - 12:51 PM
goal for next time out, with the flat spot cured, would be 1.15s.
Before then I'd like to replace the rear bushes (all are ORIGINAL factory rubber... wernt in the budget originally! whoops!)

the new go pro 2 cameras are fr0cking awesome... I chucked one on the Formula 5000 race car I work on a couple of weekends back, even at speeds over 300km they are soooo steady, the picture quality and sound is amazing.

Havent updated this in a while.
Purple car has done 2 drag days so far, mustering a high 13 as its best.
Played silly buggers with the engine, swapped on a heavily ported 12 port alloy YT head, but lost compression, extractors we made were a bit on the big side too, it still made 180 odd HP, but it was definitely down on torque and all round driveability, but, currently building a new shed at my parents,so once thats up, the new motor will get screwed together (the "big" motor)
Finally got around to pulling the diff apart (I broke "something" in it last year at the drag day, its just sat since) it kinda had to happen since the thing needed to get out of the old shed before we pulled it down!
shattered the hemisphere, smashed the carriers (cracked the bolt over section in half on both sides) and heavily twisted both axles... not a bad effort really!
Crownwheel and pinion look salvageable though, which gives us a spare 3.55 set.
Looking at maybe doing some IRACE races and see where that goes, got some research to do first.
Definitely going to do a few hillclimbs this year though (after I get over the cost of my wedding)
