Hey guys, I'm trying to track down a speedo drive gear for a 4spd 6cyl UC. Attached is a picture of it, it apears to have 17 teeth according to the person who has it.

G'day Brendon. Welcome to the forums.
I have a couple of speedo gear drives in the shed.
Always happy to throw a few parts at fellow forumers. Even better that you are in Mackay.
Cheers, Col.

Are these speedo gears the same as the Aussie/Trimatic ones? Rodomo and I have been wondering but haven't got around to checking yet! Cheers

I had a look last night on the Rare's site.
They don't look the same as aussie from what I can see and Rare's don't list 17 teeth but that doesn't mean much.

If the photo above is correct then they are definitely not the same

yes, its definitely the torquemaster or mc6 trans.

I have one here that I have no need for, it has 20 teeth on it and is blue.

Just a small point for reference, while you picture has removed any potential for confusion, a "speedo drive gear" is technically the gear that goes on the output shaft of the gear box. The gear that is on the end of the "speedo drive/gearbox fitting" is the "driven" gear.

Cheers

Well on that note, does anyone know how many teeth the MC6 has on the actual 'speedo drive gear' rather than the driven gear? Were there multiple tooth-counts availible? My speedo is way out. I could use some more figures to do the calculations (and I might grab that one off you torbirdie if it works out to be what I need.

Its a question to which I used to know the answer! From memory there were two different drive gears provided here, one for the 3.9diff/4cyl and the other one being common to all 6cyl with only the driven gear being changed for the different 6cyl diffs. They arent the same as the aussies or trimatics and finding one means finding another donor gearbox. The drive gear isnt a cog as such, I think the correct term is a worm gear. Its actually the pitch of the worm grooves thats important, I think the 6cyl would have the finer pitch, maybe 8 grooves across and the 4cyl on 6 grooves across. I may still have a 4cyl one out there in the shed, Ill have a look tomorrow.

The ratio is calculated by counting the "starts" on the worm or drive gear V the teeth on the driven gear.

think i got the 4 and 6 back to front, the 4cyl would have more teeth across or less starts.

Just coz digging up old threads is fun...

I believe these are both MC6 speedo cable adapters. The blueish coloured one has 20 teeth and the dull coloured one has 17 teeth.

The thread for the end of the speedo cable is different on the two, so they are not entirely universal, and the bluish gear is in a plastic housing. Also, the bluish is longer than the dull gear, and the bluish gear is free to slide out of the housing to be swapped, presumably - where as the dull one is secured with some kind of interference fit (not game to try and get it out because I know I can't swap them anyway and I need to put the dull one back in my car).

Any comments? I am after a higher tooth count driven gear than the 17, but the speedo cable that goes with that blue one is destroyed and missing an end so it's of no use to me. My calculations would suggest I might need around the 21 tooth mark? For my 3.08 final drive.
